what does the title mean, there is a link to the past or link (main character) goes to the past?

IIRC the title was just Nintendo's way of establishing that this game takes place before the NES games. In retrospect it turns out to be a little confusing because Ocarina has a time travel motif, whereas LttP doesn't, really.

Um you could have asked this question in the link to the past discussion just a few threads down.
But really it should be called a link to the darkness. But I guess he's going to the past, he is going to the dark world of gannon, never mind I forgot my point. =p

The game itself is a link to the Zelda series's past, because it depicts legendary events that took place long before the events of the previous two games. The "link" in the title is also a clever pun for the character's name, but it doesn't mean he goes to the past.

It just means the game takes place before the last two zeldas that are on the NES.
