I just updated the first post to give you guys an example of how it's going to look like. Feel free to point me at incorrect sentences.

I'm going to work on it this month and I'm planning to do the same thing for the VC, NDS and Wii boards.

Please continue to post more ratings.

And Yet it Moves - 9/10

Love the style of the graphics. The game is a source of constant surprise and is challenging but in a good way.

530 Eco Shooter

This rail shooter is very short. There are only 3 stages, and the challenge mode (which is all three stages combined) and after you 've beaten them all (a matter of an hour if you're good) the credits will be unlocked. That's it.

This is one of the few Zapper games on WiiWare.

There are just offline leaderboards
- a top five for all four stages where you can put in your name.

There's no multiplayer mode.

The graphics are rather blurry
and brown/grey/brownish. Not very detailed.

The music is decent J-Pop / J-Rock.

There are two good things about this game:

1. Killing hordes of enemies leave energy balls behind that you can suck up with your vacuum gun by pressing Z on the Nunchuck. A nice strategic addition that separates 530 Eco Shooter from other railshooters.

2. The better you play the more enemies show up - so there's always a challenge for every kind of gamer. That means: If you're a good gamer this game will be extremely hard, and if you suck this game sucks too.

For 1000 Wii Points this comes only recommended for highscore hunters.
There's a definite lack of content, and it's quite disappointing to see this coming from a developer (INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS) that made mega hits like Super Metroid, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, Paper Mario and WarioWare.

6/10

Hmmm....A meh rail shooter? Drats, this ruins my theory that all rail shooters* are awesome, excluding the mediocre ports. Are there any good rail shooters on WiiWare?

*Lightgun games not included

I believe GhostSlayer is a decent one. Don't know much about it, though.

GhostSlayer is a WiiMotionPlus-based swordfighting game,
not a lightgun/railshooter, but I don't know much about this game either...
except it's not out in EU and it was developed by (Korean?) GEVO,
who brought us WiiWare game Little Tournament Over Yonder,
which I will download some day.

Edit: Wild West Guns and Zombie Panic in Wonderland could be of the same ok-ish decentcy as 530 Eco Shooter.
Other railshooters like WarMen Tactics and Heavy Rain seem to fail.

I don't know what you're talking about with WarMen Tactics (because I've never heard of it), but you seem to be off your rocker with the other one. Heavy Rain isn't a rail shooter...

Got stuff mixed up. I meant Fire not Rain. I thought you were smart enough to figure that one out for yourself. You know, I can't memorize any name of any shovelware game that comes out in NA. It's good enough that I know what's released in my own countries Wii Shop.

Heavy Fire: Special Operations (WiiWare). Is a railshooter.

And WarMen Tactics (WiiWare) is a railshooter too.

You never heard of it? Well, I suppose you haven't visited your Wii Shop for quite some time then.

Er, what? So you expect me to remember the shovelware games that come out in NA? I've got better games to pay attention to. Anyways, you're right about that, I can't really afford to get carried away and spend too many space bucks on VC games, as much as I would like to.

I played a bunch of good WiiWare games lately, and here's what I thought about them.

Bang Attack by Engine Software

This is quite an addicting puzzle game with polished, colorful and clean visuals and good music:
A cool mix between Bejeweled and SameGame with it's own twists.
40 levels that you will get through in one afternoon, a 2-player versus mode and a highscore list.
Not much content, but it's a very replayable and enjoyable game.

7/10

Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People by Telltale Games

For a long time I didn't know what to make of this point&click adventure series, but after I've beaten the first chapter Homestar Ruiner (about 6~7 hours long) I'm kind of a fan. This game is very fun: Characters, puzzles, voice acting, the artsy graphic style and the many easter eggs, extras and side quests make a great package. I hope that this series gets cheaper as it's on sale everywhere, except WiiWare... a bit expensive for 5000 Wii Points, but I will get the whole series some time. I think I'll download Episode 2 with my next points card.

Home Sweet Home by Big Blue Bubble

This is a House Renovation Simulation with only a story mode. You start with a budget and read what your clients wish and then decorate their houses with fitting furniture, wallpapers, carpets, windows, lamps, etc. A bit like The Sims but more simple. The clients often want stuff in certain colors or styles or conditions: One old man says "I am sick, but I want to listen to music and watch the moon, feeling grass under my feet just like in the ol' days". So you know you have to get him some record player, a sofa in front of a window that is standing on a green carpet or something. There are 50 different missions. Every mission is two parts where the house editing/renovation is the first part. The second part is the actual building part. This is just pointing on your team consisting of 3 assistants and drag them to an item to make them work. They work automatically while you are a "fourth person" who can help manually by doing hammer, paint, saw and screwdriver motions with the Wiimote. You also have to point and drag a coffee pot to your helpers when their energy is low. Drag trash into a garbage can and aid injuries with a health kit. It's easy but a little repetitive. The only variety comes from new furniture you unlock as you progress through the stages. One neat thing is the profit you make is to create and design your own house. There's 3 save slots and even some kind of Super Guide (a solution for each level that costs 500 ingame-$ to use).

Diner Dash by PlayFirst / HUDSON SOFT

This game is basically a good Waitress Strategy Puzzler, but the WiiWare version has some flaws: The awful menus and poor presentation and all of the three control set-ups. I got used to the default method but still it's awkward and fiddly. There is a story mode, endless mode, offline multiplayer (versus and co-op) and online multiplayer. Well, I only played half of the story mode when levels got extremely challenging with multitasking those customers: Customers pop up in the entrance hall. Assign groups of them to seats/tables, wait until they made their choice from the menu, grab their order and bring it to the cook, wait until the cook is done, bring the meal to the people, wait until they finished eating, then collect the money and take the dirty dishes to a tablet so that the table is empty for new customers. That's basically what you do and you have to do it fast, because if you let these customers wait they get angry, you get less money and they even leave the restaurant. You can only hold two items in your hands so later in you rush between the seats and the sense of stress (mostly because of the controls and the tiny animations) confuse you and you wonder why you still have the dirty dish in your hand when you already took it two times to the tablet. As you progress new kinds of customers, and upgrades fresh up the experience. Still, I feel the WiiWare version could have been better.

Search'n'Find Point&Click Games Vol. 1

5 Spots Party by COSMONAUT GAMES / EnjoyUp Games from Spain

I spotted one! In the lower right corner, there's the man in the white suit missing!!

You get two snapshots and have to find the 5 differences. You can play 3 modes with up to four players and there are highscore lists for all modes. This was the funniest of the bunch.

You get 5 jokers (use them to find differences you might not find within the time limit), and win an extra joker every 10 snapshots. The differences are mostly done in cool and interesting ways. The picture quality is ok.

There are more than 300 different pictures. Next to the main Classic Mode is a Leisure Mode without time limits, and the "Find The Monkey" mode, where you have to find all kinds of monkeys hidden in the picture.

For 500 pts this is easily a 7/10.
A perfect casual party game.

"Aha! I Found It!" Hidden Object Game by Ateam from Japan

Go find the KUSARIGAMA!! Go find the KAKEJIKU!!!

In this game there are 10 levels. Each level is a rather big and chaotic image of a certain place (like a pirate bay, a sports gym, a dressing room and areas like that). They're all in comic-style, and everything seems very tiny and fuzzy. You need to have very good eyes and a big screen for this game. Also, it's not translated (only English screentext) which can be a problem for grandma: You have to find items that are written down in English in a list below the picture. Not very EU-casual friendly (forces you to learn better English). English is not the only problem for many EU grandmas and kids, Japanese words quite often pop up too. Grandma wouldn't bother anyway since she wouldn't make out anything on the clustered screen worrying about eyecancer. Really not casual this game. Actually it's pretty challenging. There's hundreds of things you can find: Every time you start a stage the things you need get randomized and so is your list of items. A helpful feature is a sparkling circle that shines for just a millisecond (every 30 seconds) in certain places, indicating that there's something for you to find. You can play with 4 players too. This ain't that bad for 500pts, despite its flaws.

You have to get a good score in one stage to unlock the next one. There is a free level select.

Only recommended for HDtv. 6/10.

The Mystery of Whiterock Castle by keen games / RTL Playtainment from Germany

You have 3 minutes to find 10 doves. Go!

I thought this was the hardest one of the bunch, and the most barebones, despite it having a linear "rescue the princess" medieval story made up of 15 levels. everything is beautifully drawn and with a quality soundtrack and good writing. But gameplay lacks in variety. You always run through the story, you always play the same linear lines of levels. You have to find 10 specific things of the same kind. Help a farmer collect 10 red apples that could lie everywhere. Help a gardener catching 10 grasshoppers etc. Sometimes you can even open a door, a box or a barrel. Sometimes you have to search a cave with a flashlight. All good and well. But not enough, not even 4 player fun, only 2P. You can decide between co-op and versus and EASY or HARD. In HARD you just have less time. And yes, once the time runs out, you start from scratch. There's no passwords, saves or continues - just highscores. Well, the other 2 games had more variety. Always playing the same levels in the same order over and over again bores. Ah, I forgot one good feature that "Aha! I Found It!" could have benefitted from too: A magnifying glass.

So, in the end a game that is beautiful to watch and listen to is flawed by the lack of good modes. The 700pts tag doesn't help either. 5/10.

Hydroventure (EU) / Fluidity (NA) - 9/10

Probably one of the best games on WiiWare since World of Goo was a WiiWare exclusive. Great gameplay and achieves the rare feat of making you care about the welfare of a pool of water.

Plenty of Metroidy exploration as you expand your moveset leads to some very tricky but cool puzzles. There's plenty for completionists with lots of hidden rainbow drops and puzzle pieces to unlock challenges.

There are some controller eating moments of frustration especially when trying a tricky manoeuvre near an instant death hazard and the Warning: Spoiler Below.
ice stick
ability can be very unreliable at the most inopportune moments.

There's some lovely deBlob music in the background but I was often too busy exploring to register it.

I've played it for about 13 hours in total and still have lots to find and new areas to unlock. It's well worth its 1200 point price tag.

Well, thanks. You like these Spot the Differences/Hidden Object Games?

I updated the mini-reviews above, because when I read through them again today, they were crap.

Vol. 2 is coming when Yard Sales is available in EU. In the meantime I'm going to write some more mini reviews about a few other WiiWare games.
Expect Moki Moki, Chronos Twins DX and more...

Jungle Speed

(C) 2010 by NEXT LEVEL GAMES.
Published by Playful Entertainment.
Original game by Asmodée éditions.

1000 Wii Points.

I got this game about a year ago and never really got around playing it until a week ago.
Since we rediscovered it, and played a multiplayer match, it's THE party game!

Jungle Speed is a port of a real card game, but don't be scared as it's one of those card games that actually can be translated to a home console without any kind of loss over the original. So the WiiWare port is everything Jungle Speed fans and newcomers could have hoped for - and more.

The gameplay is simple: everyone wants to be the first to get rid of their cards and takes turns in flipping cards over. As soon as another player has the same symbol on his card, you have to be fast and grab a totem in the middle of the table. The loser of the "duel" gets your cards.

The game is presented with high quality backgrounds, african music, colorful cartoon characters with funny animations and sound effects, and neat menu interfaces. It all makes you wonder why a card game is presented in such a polished and beautiful way and makes you wish every game could have this standard.

This is one of the few 8-player simultaneous games. Four players have to use the Wiimote and four others have to use the Nunchuck. Any setup of Wiimote and Nunchuck works. The controls are easy and perfect: The A-button or the Nunchuck analog stick flips a card, a shake with the Wiimote/Nunchuck is a feint, and a shake plus the A+B / C+Z is grabbing the totem. It's a game where the little bit of waggle enhances the realistic approach.

There's lots of content, too - and it's free and available from the start. There are two add-on card packs you can switch on or off. One gives you more playing cards that adds a whole lot of variety, and the other one gives you more action cards that adds to the depth. No extra downloads. No extra costs.
Then there are 6 different totems you can choose from, the original one and 5 WiiWare exclusives. The 5 new ones have special abilities that make the game more challenging and give the game a touch of what wouldn't be possible in the real life game. For example, one totem's magic is a whirl that spins all cards slowly to make it more challenging. Another one summons fire or wind to obscure the playing field.
And if you're into one player you have 4 difficulty settings to choose from. There are also quite a bunch of achievements/records to win and your Mii is supported to save your personal records.
Last but not least there's a tutorial for those who never played Jungle Speed before.

I think the makers of Mario Strikers Charged Football, Punch-Out!! Wii and Luigi's Mansion 2 have done an outstanding job porting the virtual version of Jungle Speed. It couldn't have been better. I wonder why Nintendo did not publish this game as they have such a close relationship to NEXT LEVEL GAMES.

9/10 - One of those overlooked gems on the WiiWare service. If you and your friends are into multiplayer, this one's worth to have around for quite some fun on Sunday afternoons. I believe this game has the ability to be a constant part of your weekend parties for months to come. Don't forget the drinks.

Default A few more damning reviews

Airport Mania: First Flight

I admit it: I'm a Facebook gamer. After this review I promise to scrub myself clean with a brillo pad, but let's get one thing straight: Despite looking and playing like a Facebook game this isn't anywhere near as fun or polished as you might expect.

Let's get on the good foot first: This game has cute graphics and sound which will appeal to kids and most Facebook gamers and will last a while, about five hours for 500 points looks like pretty good value.

Now the bad stuff: Those five hours will be the most drawn out unchallenging experience you've get out of a game. That's acceptable for Facebook because the whole idea is to draw people in for a fair few hours before getting them to pay out for extras and invite friends to make the game go further and that's where Airport Mania stumbles.

Simply put, because of the lack of challenge (I completed the game first time without a single rating below two stars, three being perfect), the rather feeble choice of unlockable content upon completion, no downloadable content and the lack lustre achievements selection, finishing the game feels unrewarding.

The graphics for the game, like I said are cute but the backgrounds feel a little amateurish. If they were drawn by kids (the credits seem to invoive family) then I won't make this an issue but non-the-less, until you see the credits you tend to ignore the prompts to find secrets in the background through choice rather than through gameplay distraction.

Overall: 5/10 A very average title, even for the money. Needed a steeper learning curve or downloadable level packs with at least a little challenge.

Anima: Ark of Sinners

Now here's a dog's dinner of a game. Hyped by a website I'd prefer not to mention I felt a little inspired to purchase this one because I'd not purchased Castlevania Rebirth. Now I wish I had instead.

To be honest, I played this game for about an hour and I thought it sucked so I deleted it. Then I watched Nintendaan's videos showing off the dodgy enemy AI and felt inspired to play it to find more problems, started thinking I enjoyed the combat which I hated so much and then realised how cheap it was about 15 minutes in.

That's Ark of Sinner's main and overall damning problem: It's totally unplayable due to the lack of responsiveness on behalf of the main character and the cheap, horrible combat. Even on Easy where you can hit multiple enemies, combat is still unfair resulting in many frustrating lost lives. On other difficulties you can only hit one enemy at a time so when there's more than one the problem is compounded to the point of blue air chocking the life out of your living room. Even worse, some attacks don't seem to connect and enemies can seemingly hit you even when you're out of range.

Graphically the game is less than impressive with dull, muddy textures (which are supposed to fit the scene of a crumbling city of the damned), a blurry un-detailed main character, generic enemies and some horribly drawn 2D Manga cut scenes.

Audio is equally unimpressive and whilst the music starts of interesting, I found after five minutes of listening to a woman wailing in my ear it was time to turn the bugger off.

The control setup is fine and the list of seemingly out-of-place and worthless combos sounds like fun but mean nothing when the game is so completely broken.

Overall: 1/10 Unplayable, broken, generic, painful - take your pick, the only point I've given it goes to the sensible choice of button layout.

You, Me and the Cubes (first impressions)

Another game that seems to have gotten hyped more than it's worth. I've only played the first set of stages from level 1 so far but it just feels really sterile and and the controls seem awkward and the motion controls in particular seem to be tacked on just for the hell of it.

i didn't care for the Fallos because you have an infinite number of them and judging from the instructions that doesn't change, with just time penalities factoring into the gameplay. Within the first four stages all I could think was "So much more could have been done with this."

Maybe it's because I picked up Boom Blox: Bash party for a fiver at HMV. I'm not particularly over enamored with that title either but it's controls and general gameplay are diverse enough to lift it waaay above what's on offer from You, Me and the Cubes.

The graphics are ok and the audio is largely non existent. I recall the game blathering on about different sounds being produced when you get one of those interfering Fallos but either I was going deaf or the game requires you to waste battery power by having audio and rumble switched on on your wiimote because i really couldn't tell any difference through the telly.

Overall: 5/10 Another average puzzler swimming in the sea of average that is Wiiware waters. The supposed polish just isn't there as far as I can see.

Awesome! Thanks for your reviews. I'm glad to hear a contrasting opinion about this game. Gives me more ammo to make an informed decision with.

Default Something a bit better...

F.A.S.T. Racing League Review

Time for a time out on the Wiiware bashing, this time I've got a slightly more upbeat review although in all honesty this game is far from perfect.

The main premise of the game is to race around tracks competing with other racers to become the champion of the universe or whatever. The gimmick to the game is that you can phase shift (or change the colour and polarity of your vehicle) to make use of coloured strips for boosts and coloured pads for jumping over gaps. You need to be the right colour (i.e. the same colour) to make use of these special features and in order to change colour you need to collect buttons placed around the track. You can also use five buttons at a time to give your vehicle a speed boost.

First impressions first. This main game is quite hard and can seem unfairly so for the player who wants something fun to play rather than being pressured into perfection, because that's what you need to be in this game: A perfectionist.

You'll need to know the tracks really well because the slightest slip in speed opens the door to loosing one or two places and whilst recovering is possible it can be still be challenging. Crashing and destroying your ship however can make recovering to an acceptable position an almost impossible task, particularly in harder leagues. Be prepared with the knowledge that when you've completed one league you're more than likely going to experience a soul-crushing lesson in defeat or two (or ten) before you complete the next.

Once you complete a league you can replay individual tracks to hone your skills. I personally never bothered with this mode but more on this later.

On a lighter note, the challenge mode is actually very enjoyable because it's actually not that challenging for the most part. Ironic I know. Challenge mode also feels refreshing as it throws mariokart-esque and Excite Truck ideas into the mix such as collecting items or destroying items reach-the-goal-in-time dashes all to be completed within fair(ish) time limits.

Graphically, yes this game is one of the better lookers but personally I find there's something a bit off with the visuals in certain tracks. Perhaps it's because I've played Jett Rocket so much and find the textures and effects a little out of place and artificial. The futuristic theme is fine but a little sterile, I much prefer an organic look with racers though so I guess it's a matter of personal opinion.

Audio as ever is the usual mix of crappy techno music, cheesy repetitive voice-overs and whooshing noises that seem to plague most futuristic racers so I guess that's a plus. Personally i found it forgettable and as such scores nil-point in affecting my final score.

My major bone of contention sits with the controls, none of which seem ideal. Saying that, the motion controls are waaay to loose in my opinion but even then by the time you hit the third league the speed of the game is so fast that unless you're really well acquainted with the layout of the tracks you'll spend more time slamming into walls trying to keep up with the pack and cursing the general floaty feeling of even the most appropriate vehicles.

Yes, there are multiple ships to choose from and all have different attributes (weight, top speed and acceleration) and to be honest, I found sticking to the middle ground to be the best option and the lighter, faster ones were just too much of a pain to control on icy surfaces

Track designs are okay if a little dull. Yes there's loop the loops and you can float upside down over difficult (but usually unavoidable deadly) sections of track but nothing gets really exciting. There's few alternate routes and normally missing the polarity or a pad or strip punishes you severely, the former usually resulting in destroying your vehicle whilst the latter slows you down to a grimace inducing crawl almost instantly.

There's also a fair degree of inconsistency where for the most part tracks are wide open but some later track design seem to punish the player unfairly by placing boost pads in tight winding sections which usually result in a combination of boost, crunch, boost, crunch as you struggle to maintain any degree of control and placing should you fail to find the optimal route.

Like I mentioned earlier, there is a feature to play individual tracks to improve skill but sadly you can only play those tracks once you've completed a league which seems a little alien to me. Personally I'd have liked to see any track you've been on instantly unlocked for practice rather than constantly replaying tracks I had no problem with.

Overall: 6.5/10 A solid if frustrating experience which will probably appeal to the gamer with a high level of tolerance for error. For those who want a game that's fun, more diverse and better presented visually and audibly I recommend purchasing Extreme G III from Ebay which comes in at about the same price.

ROBOCALYPSE - Beaver Defense

Vogster Entertainment

600 Wii Points

ROBOCALYPSE - Beaver Defense is a strategic tower defense game in realtime. It's unique on the Wii. The other Wii games in the same genre that I know are FFCC: My Life as a Darklord and Crystal Defenders R1&R2 but they take a different approach on the classic tower defense genre. Beaver Defense is much more like the tower defense games you can find on PC.

Content

- 10 stages in the Campaign Mode and 5 endless stages in the Survival Mode
- 4 tower units that can be enhanced in 2 different ways four times (for a total of 32 different tower units)
- 6 hero units (4 of them need to be unlocked in the Campaign Mode) with special powers that you can level up
- a hilarious storyline by the creator of SpongeBob
- 4 empty slots for your profile

Presentation

Pretty unpolished. The cutscenes are still comic-images with very sparse animation. Speak-bubbles bring the story forward. There is no music, and no soundeffects - only absolute silence accompanying the cutscenes... for minutes. Also, the pictures fading in and out is very slow and feels broken. All in all it's pathetic. Unfinished.

3/10

Controls

I can't understand people who wanted pointer controls in other tower defense games on the Wii. It's annoying in games where you have to place units on a grid, and if you don't have steady hand you build a unit in the wrong place, wasting time and money and in the worst case being open for attacks in the heat of the battle. SQUARE ENIX did it right with their games offering simple digipad controls. Beaver Defense has only one control option: pointer controls. If you're good at aiming this isn't much of a problem, but digipad, mouse and touchscreen proved to be better for this genre.

Graphics

The 2D art is nice to look at, and the little scurry units are all animated nicely. Even with lots of multiple rocket launchers and tons of units on screen there's no slowdown. The actual core game is presented very well, though you initially might get confused by all the stuff on screen. After playing a few stages you'll get used to the interface though. The cutscenes drag down the score a little.

7/10

Music

Not many tracks, but what is coming from the speakers is pretty nice actually and fits the theme well. Absolute silence in the cutscenes drag down the score again, but not enough to kill the in-game experience.

7/10

Gameplay

It's a tower defense game. Wave after wave of enemies come from certain borders of the screen and approach your base, trying to reduce the health of your HQ. If the HQ blows up it's game over. You start with some money to buy turrets that destroy enemies in range. Killed enemies give you more money, so you can build more turrets, or level them up. In the beginning you can select 2 out of 6 heroes. They all have special attacks and you can move them around the map. Once they killed enough enemies you can level up their stats like in a RPG. If you defeat a certain amount of waves you win the mission and progress.

I should note some minor flaw as well: it's odd that you cannot replay any of the single player missions, not even in another difficulty. Once you beat the campaign it's greyed out. You can only rewatch the horrible silent cutscenes in the useless "Extraz" option. In order to replay the campaign you have to delete your profile and start over from scratch or use one of the other 4 slots.

So, when you finished the campaign there's only one other mode to attend to: the survival mode, five selectable stages of endless waves. This game mode is addicting and rewarding as you're not limited by a certain number of waves. As long as your HQ stays alive, you can fill the screen with more and more units, and overpower them. It would be great to have highscores or stats for each stage but you guess it: nothing of that kind.

6/10

Rating

This game has so much potential. It's flawed in many aspects. However, the core game is good. For only 600 points you shouldn't be too harsh. I think this genre has enough fans that will overlook some of the flaws. And it's unique on the Wii as far as I'm aware. The survival mode is endless, so that will get some playtime too.

It's like Monsteca Corral in some ways: I would have gladly payed 1000 pts for either game if the developers worked on the sharp edges a little more.

7/10

Mega Man 9 10/10-Perfect gameplay, stages and special weapons.
Plus:Reminds all classics Mega Man 1 and 2
Minus: DLC is expensive.

Mega Man 10 9/10-Stands on 9's road and 9's DLC's are free.
Plus:New buttons to change weapons and exit from Time Attacks
Minus:Weapons and stages aren't as much fun as 9's.

Sonic 4 8.5/10-Reminds old style Sonic games.
Plus:You can select stages at any time you want.
Minus:Controls are a little bit clunky.

Aya and the Cubes of Light 6.9/10
Grapics are good, sound is ok, but controls could be better. Some motion controls (for both WiiMote and NunChuck) should've been simple button controls, that would've made the controls better. Overall, the gameplay is ok but not satisfying. You just don't seem to be able to get a 100% score on all levels. That's why I award it with almost a 7.
