On 25th March 2008 WiiWare started in Japan. Now, exactly two years later, there's a total of 79 WiiWare games that are exclusive to Japan. A good opportunity to pick our Top 10 and send a message to Nintendo. If you're interested in some of these games below and want your voice to be heard, let's have a chance! And hopefully some of these games get a translation and western release one day!

天使の ソリティア is a Solitaire game. As EU and NA each have their own Solitaire game (Solitaire in EU and 5-in-1 Solitaire in NA) I think we don't need this Japanese one. It's kinda redundant, or does someone know if it has some special features none of our versions have? Well, it's looking cute and I wouldn't mind it being released here. A translation would be quick and easy too.

Kotoba no Puzzle: Mojipittan Wii

Kotoba no Puzzle: Mojipittan Wii is a unique word game along the lines of SCRABBLE. And from what I have heard this is one of those games that is absolutely untranslateable into other languages. It would break the gameplay. So, the only way to get this released over here is in it's original form (you know we have Japanese people over here that would love to play this) but that might be just not profitable enough.

Yakuman Wii: Ide Yosuke no Kenkou Mahjong

Nintendo's own Mahjong game seems to be a neat version with tutorials, Mii support and online modes. Mahjong is a traditional Japanese game that can be played with up to 4 players. Don't confuse this with the western Mahjong which is Shanghai. We don't have any real Mahjong game on the Wii yet and this would be a great addition for all Mahjong fans since this is not as exotic and unknown as some may think.

Saikyou Ginsei Shogi / "Silver Star Shogi"

Two games of the Silver Star series were relesed in NA in Summer 2009: Silver Star Chess and Silver Star Reversi. This here would be called "Silver Star Shogi" if it was released, but SilverStarJapan couldn't bother. And we are lucky about that, since there's already a much better version out in Japan. Better forget about this bare-to-the-bones version and bring the Nintendo version (look at #8) with online modes, tutorials and Mii support over here.

Oekaki Logic

This is a variation of the Picross puzzle genre with it's own interesting logic to get to the solution. A colorful and nice version.
With five additional level packs for 300 Wii Points as Pay&Play DLC this game is a total of 2000 Wii Points.

Saikyou Ginsei Igo / "Silver Star Go"

After Chess, Reversi and Shogi this is the fourth game in the Silver Star Board game series. This time it's "Igo", better known as Go in our territories. Again this is a very barebones version and again Nintendo has a much better version with online modes, Mii support and tutorial on offer (see #9).

This is the plastic wrap bubble pop game, the latest craze in Japan. The epitome of wasting your time! At least it has classic Namco games themed levels like Pac-Man and Xevious. Personally I have better things to do with my time. Really not my cup of tea.

Tsūshin Taikyoku - Hayazashi Shogi Sandan

This is Nintendo's version of the Shogi board game with online multiplayer, lots of game modes, tutorials, options and Mii support. Shogi is known as the "Japanese chess" over here. It's hard for beginners to distinguish the various "units" on the board because the writings on the tiles are in Japanese, so it takes a bit of time to learn this strategic game. Fortunately the game shows you all moves with each tile if you want, so for beginners and advanced players it's the definite version.

Silver Star's versions may be only 500 Wii Points compared to the 1000 Wii Points of Nintendo's versions, but rest assured, if you want quality get Nintendo's versions!

Tsūshin Taikyoku - World Chess / Wii Chess

Actually this chess game made by Nintendo with the professional Loop Express AI was released on retail disc in EU as Wii Chess on 18.01.2008 for 29,99€. It's the same game (just with a different title) and it's online-compatible with the Japanese WiiWare game. A WiiWare release for just 1/3 of the original price just like in Japan would be reasonable for many, especially for NA since they don't have a version of this.

Aero Guitar, just like the name says, makes you swing your Wiimote through the air, holding it like a guitar and strum through a variety of songs. Minna de Asobou! Koinu de Kururin

A quirky colorful 4-player puzzler with dog puppies and online leaderboards for 500 Wii Points. It's a take on the Pac-Attack/Cosmo-Gang genre with new elements that make the game even more fun to play. Puzzle games are an extensive comprehensive genre and WiiWare is the perfect platform for this as long as the puzzle games are good and unique like this one.

A simple Darts game with 3 modes (Zero-One, Cricket, Count-Up) for up to four players. NA recently got two Darts games (Pub Darts by Big Blue Bubble and Dart Rage by JV Games) but it's debatable which one's the best. At least Darts Wii is one of the better outings.

We already have the original as a remake (Arkanoid Plus! by Taito) and a clone (Block Breaker Deluxe by Gameloft) so it's hard to say if we need another one. Well, it's not bad, it has a two player simultaneous mode and online leaderboards, so for 500 Wii Points you at least get a reasonable clone. The @SIMPLE Series consists of 5 games right now (see #22, #25, #62 and #67 for the rest). Obviously none of them are released outside of Japan.

Tokyo City Nights is a lifestyle/date sim by Gameloft. You might know other games of the series like Miami Nights: Singles in the City for the Nintendo DS which is very similiar to this one. Find a job, earn some money, buy clothes and gifts and date girls and train your skills in minigames until you're the coolest boy/girl of Tokyo.

Saikyou Ginsei Gomoku Narabe / "Silver Star Five-In-A-Row"

The last one in the Silver Star series of barebone boardgames, at least until... well, just watch out. Gomoku Narabe is known as Five-In-A-Row in our territories. This simple strategy game is the only Gomoku Narabe game on the service so it's rising up in value a little, but not enough to warrant an OK score. You can play games like this for free with just a pen and a paper. Well, if you have no one around to play with you this has the benefit of CPU players, but that's it.

Unfortunately EU is missing out on both so they should be a good addition since this particular genre has some fans there.

A slot machine with waggling controls! You might think this is something along the lines of Max & the Magic Marker but this is no "jump&draw". It's a point&draw-adventure. This is a parody of platforming games and videogames in general. It's full of secrets, jokes and try&error-traps that aren't meant to be serious. Old-school gameplay and audiovisuals make this a charming title and for only 500 Wii Points many are really curious about this one!

This is a cheery virtual version of the popular boardgame The Game of Life. The approach of the WiiWare version is very different from the original checkerboard game that was created in 1860. Nonetheless this game is cult! Now if the WiiWare version is true to the original then this is a great one, although personally I'd like a more serious oldschool-approach to this classic.

81diver is a popular manga in Japan. The story is about the life of a young Shogi player. This alone was reason enough for developer SilverStarJapan to remake their old Silver Star Shogi WiiWare game (see #4) that was released just a few months before. They replaced the old characters with 81diver-characters and then rocketed up the price from 500 Wii Points to 1000 Wii Points. It still has no online features or any additional modes of gameplay, just some textbased story/dialogue to please 81diver fans.
