| Imagine hopping on the Wii Fit board while holding the wiimote. You go to your software and are given the choice between Karate, Kendo, Muay Thai, and Aikido. Depending on your main choice, you're to create a lesson plan containing one, some, or all of the available martial arts. After creating your lesson plan, you go right to your instructor, who is in the same style as the Wii Fit instructor. You practice your way up to the point where you enter ranked or belt matches. Etc etc etc. I think it's a great idea, at least. |

Simplify the following equation: Q:Martial Arts - experience x 'Teach yourself' lessons + Anime/Ninja-internet culture = Insta-failure + Injury A: Not such a good idea. It sounds good in theory, but any martial art, with the obvious exception of Chun Kuk Do, requires dedication, discipline and perseverance, or in the case of Chun Kuk Do, having tiny bit of several 'arts' and collecting them into one great, big ego-stroking failure-parade.

| Disagree. The experience argument would apply just as well to Yoga and WiiFit. The injury arguments would also apply just as well to any Wii game that involves striking, like Wii Sports Boxing. Playing a Star Wars game won't make you a Jedi and playing a golf game on Wii won't make you Tiger Woods, but it doesn't mean that it can't be fun. |

Yoga is a calm excerise, not knowledge that can be used by the irresponsible to injure others. When practicing a martial Art, you need to sign release forms and obtain a liscence, because of the chance that you could injure someone with it. It's a great way to keep fit, but actually practicing the martial art in real life is a much better alternative.

I also think it's a bad idea. The human element--specifically the ability make decisions based on real, human experience & the ability to react in real time to developing situations (like bad form, injuries, or frustration)--can't really be replaced by software. Wait. Are you suggesting a martial arts game using the balance board as a peripheral, or are you suggesting martial arts edutainment software? Cuz the first post sure sounds like you're suggesting edutainment, what with the lesson plans and all. Last edited by pdRydia; 12th July 2008 at 12:52 AM. | |
