Default Mario kart Wii vs. Oldskool Mario Kart

So, I got Mario Kart Wii. (even if you don't have it, people are talking about it all over the internet). People say that its not as good as the old ones. I have to agree with that.

It itsn't quite as good as the old ones. I still play it, but I tend to play Mario kart DS a little more often. Now like most Mario Kart games, you're driving along, passing everybody, about to win, here comes the finish line, wait a minute, BLUE SHELL! BOOM! Now a few people have passed you. Oh, well. It's just a game, right?

Yes, its just a game. But MKW? Its crazy! Because in this, you can play with up to 12 players. unlike the old ones where it's just 8. So now, instead of 7 players trying to KILL you, now theres 11. that doesn't sound too good.

BLUE SHELLS! RED SHELLS! THE SQUID! POW BLOCK! BOMBS! LIGHTNING! Someone bumps into you with the stupid lightning cloud! You suddenly go from 1st place to 7th. but it doesn't stop there, someone else speeds by and drops bananas in front of you. SLIP! Red shells...again! 7th to 12th.

Now some people might say it makes the game more challenging. No! It's just plain annoying! Skill doesn't even matter anymore. Now it's all about luck. "oh, I sure hope that i don't get hit with a blue shell". And I know about skill in these games. Around my neighborhood, no one can beat me at Mario Kart DS. (I exagerate, of course people have beaten me on an occasion)

But the point is the new Mario Kart game is good. Just... not as good. You should still get the game. The bikes are awesome. Online play is good (better than Brawls constant lagging). The game is definatly worth getting. Don't let my opinions stop you from getting it if you don't have it yet.

So, what does everyone else have to say about the differences between MKW and Oldskool MK? Questions? Comments? Agree? Disagree? Meh? Tell the world your thoughts!

(woot! My first Topic!)

I just find it hilarious. Just an hour ago I was playing online, I was doing good then a pow clock smacks me, then out of the blue, and blue shell comes, I go flying in the air when three other red shells comes at the same time and hit me, then a bullet bull comes and smacks me off a cliff, I get back on and slip on a banana ;p. Although It can get annoying some times, but I don't care too much, because it's not too often you'll get hit with three items at once, two is common, but three isn't. and even if three items come at you, usually only two of them will matter because once you get hit you are invincible for 1 and a half seconds. Also, if your good enough, if you have a banana or something, you can stop red shells by throwing one behind you at the right time and the shell will hit the banana instead of you. It's also easier to do that now since there's an icon that tells you a red shell is coming, the shells move slower, and you can tell when it's almost there because the radar will get louder and louder.

Blue Shells you can't dodge unless you have a star, but it's also easy to dodge bullet bills because there's also a radar showing you one is coming so you can just move out of the way. As for the mega Mushroom, it only lasts what, 5 seconds? You also have a radar showing you one is coming, and by timing the music, you can tell if it will make it to you, or if the character will turn back to normal before they reach you. and bananas are just common sense, move out of the way.

So if your good, it's much easier to to dodge items. Here's a tip, when your in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, you get bananas and blocks a lot, keep them. That way you can use them to stop red shells and the likes. Although it's harder now that you can't hold items behind you. So it still involves luck, but Mario Kart involves more skill then luck.

But just to say, i really like Mario kart wii, It has lots of features, and a very good online.

Yeah, ferSure. MKW is still a good game but its still complicated. I guess its just kinda like a shock to my system. I was good in MKDS. but suddenly, I stink at MKW. I always have bananas to block red shells. And the radar thing is good to warn you about incoming attacks. Oh! and the "look-behind-you-button" or rearview mirror. Thats awesome.

Oh, and funny story. I was playing MKW just the other day. In first, about to win, suddenly -- red shells. People pass me. I hit an item box. I get the triple mushrooms. I use two of them to regain my place in first. I save one. Then I here the noise of the Blue Shell. "Oh, come on!" Then I totally remembered the mushroom I saved. I pray to the Gaming Gods that this will work. WOOSH! I use the mushroom, zoom past the shell, and the shell explodes and exterminates Koopa. So its still based a little on luck. But its not only bad luck.

Geeze, your right! I forgot. Probably because I was just playing it using the Wii Wheel. I usually play using the Remote/nunchuck combo. I just felt like giving the Wii Wheel another try. I can't stand that thing. Maybe its just me but I just can't get any control with that thing.

i could do without the wheel, but my 6 year old wont play the game without it.

i enjoy Mario Kart Wii more than the older ones mainly because of the addition of bikes. bikes are fun.. as for the blue shell, well, thats one item i could do without in the game. i never get it, but i almost always get hit by it, even when its not targeting me.

I don't even want to touch the other controls, the wheel is prefect for me. But I love the bikes too, on DK summit there really cool.

I don't get the title nor the poll options for this thread.
Your MKW impressions are ok and it was fun to read, but.....old school mario kart?
Old school can't mean anything else than SMK and MKSC while you're talking of MKDS.
I don't see any mk old school talking here.

Don't get me wrong, lots of people come here and write garbage for months, while your first post is interesting....I just feel the title is wrong and it shouldn't be a poll.

Anyway, MKDS was an instant classic and I agree that MKW hasn't the same charm.
As it's always been it looks the 2D games are still on my MK podium, just after MKDS.

I see your point. I'm still a newb so I guess I have to learn a little bit more. I didn't think too much about the title. I just made it up on the spot. I just needed a way to describe all the MK games before MKW and Oldskool (spelled like that on purpose) was the first thing that came to mind. But I'm glad that my first post is interesting and not garbage. so thanks.

by the way, the only reason I put a poll on this post was because, as it was my first post, it gave me the option of adding a poll along with my topic. Which, again, I made up the choices on the spot. I guess it is pretty useless.

Although Mario kart DS was lots of fun, in my opinion Mario kart Wii is victorious. It improves in every way, graphics, game play, online, multiplayer...etc. The only thing that Mario kart wii is missing is the multiplayer Grand Prix, and the missions mode. Every thing else I just love about the game.

Happens in MKDS too.

yeah, I quoted my own post. so it does happen in MKDS just, not as much as in MKW.

Actually, I don't need online, period. Mario Kart Wii is most fun in local 4-player, for example.

I kinda think I'm in the minority here, but I like what I like.

While I've been playing Mario Kart since the SNES incarnation, I never really got into the series. However, a couple months ago I had some spare cash and took a risk buying Mario Kart Wii and I must say I love the game & the Wii Wheel. This is the 1st game in the Mario Kart series that I really got into and I'm certain that it's because of the option to use the motion controls.

I will admit that I had a lot of trouble controlling my karts and bikes with the wheel at first. But after awhile if you keep at it, you'll really get the hang of it. I'd compare it with borrowing a friend's car and having to get used to all of it's little nuances.

I probably also really Mario Kart Wii because using that Wii Wheel makes the game feel more like something from the arcade rather than a console game.
