Exclamation New Wii Shooter - Blast Works

Picked this game up today, and I must say, it is really neat. It is a horizontal SHMUP but the enemies you destroy can be grabbed and make your ship bigger, capable of firing more and in different directions, dependant on what angle the enemy unit is facing when it attaches to your ship. You press one button to fire, and another to retract all your attachments in, so you can navigate between bullets. If those debris apendages get hit, they break off. It took a little while to get into, but it is actually a very innovative gameplay idea.

I have not beaten the game, but apparantly doing so unlocks more parts for the editor mode. What's that? An editor mode? Indeed, Blast Works has a full game editor where you can design your own ships, levels and enemies, bullet patterns, etc. This takes up 127 blocks of Wii memory, but the advantage is that the game also has wi-fi support. The options are to download from the user created depot of content, download official extra levels from the main site, and send or receive new content from people on your friend list.

Still need more time to play test this and tinker with the editor mode, but it looks very promising. We only got in 4 copies total at the store I work at, so it may become a rare game that increases in value down the line. Definately something for SHMUP fans to check out. I know I am glad I purchased it.

Sounds like an interesting little concept for shooter fans, especially if it receives continued support. Don't forget to post in the Wii Games Master List.

This games been on my radar for quite a while. I really like the way you can 'design' pretty much everything in the game, or use the depot to get some great pieces.

No word of a European release yet, other than 'June 2008', but it looks like a good title for me.

EDIT:

Just found out that the game contains both 'Gunroar' and 'rRootage' - both great shooters, that are free on the net to try out, but it'd be great to have them on the Wii!

Castle of Shikigami III (US)
Milestone Shooting Collection: Karous Wii (Karous, Radilgy and Chaos Field)
The Monkey King: The Legend Begins (US)
Counter Force (EU 505 Games, around in the bargain bins) (US)
Heavenly Guardian (US)
Simple Wii Series Vol. 4: The DokoDemo Asoberu - The Shooting Action

Good eye! I've been keeping my eye on the Milestone collection since it was known as 'Karous Wii' and I really like the look of Castle of Shikigami III. Counter Force looks surprisingly decent for a game that gets pretty mediocre reviews.

Girlfriend just picked this up for me.

It's pretty rad.
I can't quite figure out how to make levels yet, and I can't get through the campaign yet, but it's freaking sweet.

It's also waaaaaaaay too easy on multiplayer.

It still doesn't have a steady release date in Europe... It's already being reviewed as one of the better games on the Wii (last time I checked it was 10th in Metacritic on the Wii)

Come on! Release dang you!

Now... What to distract myself with until that...

I could get Shikigami III and a Freeloader - I haven't updated yet, and nothing at E3 has been announced that would make me.

Default Anticipation

Man, I've been looking for this game everywhere, but no one seems to have it(not "out of stock", just "don't get it in"). I even have my account set up on there website already. I didn't look for it last time I was at Gamestop, but I couldn't have afforded it anyways, what with everything else I got. I hope I get it by Cristmas, because besides Battalion wars(nobody ever has that one either), Blastworks is THE game for the Wii that I want, and I won't get any other Wii game until I obtain it.

Sad.

Anyways anyone knows what this is?
From E3 release list:
Ultimate Shooting Collection (UFO Interactive, sept. 23)
Is that the US version of Milestone Shooting Collection or something else?

Yes, indeed it is! I can't wait for it, I always wanted to try Chaos Field, but I heard some bad reviews and chickened out. Now even if it's bad, there's two other games for me to play. Another game to add to my Xmas list!

Also, the dumbest idea for a Wii attatchment, the Wii poolstick!

Edit: Now I'm a Boo Diddly! I don't know Diddly what the Boo that is!

Please let it get a Euro release! Europeans are already being denied Shikigami 3!

Well, I already need to NOT UPDATE and get a Freeloader for Shiki III, I suppose it would give me more reason to get one.

Default Curse you Target!

What's a Freeloader?

In any case, this game has some of my favorite Kenta Cho games as unlockables, like Torus Troopers, Gunroar!, rRootage, and the original Tumiki Fighters( which this game is based off of), and those are my favoritest Shmups and I can't wait to play them on the big screen! That's reason enough for me to want this, but the Editor and Co-op too? This is going to be the best game I've ever played! That is, if I ever get to play it!!!

A Freeloader is a disc that allows people who haven't updated their Wii to a certain point to play games that aren't local to their region. For example; It would let me play A,erican NTSC games on my PAL Wii.

Darn it, I already updated! Oh, well, I don't think there's anything in Japan worth getting for the Wii. I have other questions about it, but I just realized there is already a thread for Freeloader discussions, so I'll just ask 'em there.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/wii/data/941651.html

That link puts the EU release of Blast Works on 26/9/08.

It's from Gamefaqs, so reliability may be a problem.

I have an account up myself, but I don't have the game yet, and none of the stores seem to have it

I'm always glad to hear that people enjoy my work since it is pretty time consuming to make the large sprites. I only wish that they had releast the shapes without the borders sooner so that Bowser and Goku looked better.

Wow Han, those are some brilliant ships/enemies! When it comes out in Europe, I'm gonna download them and make some type of retro-Nintendo based shmup! Can user created levels be placed on the DEPO?

Are you serious? If I see it for $20 at the local EB, I'll pick it up immediately.

I know, I saw it! Sadly, I had just bought it at stupid Best Buy for 40 bucks. I don't think I'll get ganes from Best Buy again, since they almost never have what I'm looking for, and it's in the same mall as EB Games.

Plus, Gamestop also had Battalion Wars 2 for 30 dollars! I could of bought both! G-D damnit!

To their credit, Best Buy has Geometry Wars Galaxies for the DS for $19.99. That's at least $5 cheaper than I've seen it anywhere else.

Too bad I already bought the Wii version from there at twice the price.

I got my copy of the Wii version for $23, but it's now been bumped down to $19.99 as well... I heard there are extra features available if you have both the Wii and DS versions, but I don't know for sure. Off to Google I go! (It's hard to resist any brand new game priced under $20...!)

Yes, it says so right on the box, there are some sort of unlockables available for purchasing both products.

Edit: No wait, it says it in the booklet, not the box! My bad. Mostly the same though, they still tell you it, instead of making you find out on your own.

It's now $20 at Best Buy (I swore to all the deities of the universe that it was $10 on the BB site this morning, my apologies Kreegs)... You're totally foolish if you don't get it NOW...

Garsh darn it!!! None of my local EBs have it lower than $39.99 even though it's $20 on the website. Maybe the price cut is USA only? I'm going to check the only Best Buy in town just to see if they carry their discount prices over the border.

EDIT: Best Buy lists it at $24.99 on their website. This strikes me as a bit odd, given than the dollars are pretty much at par. Maybe it's to cover the additional cost of French manuals. Bah.

It's now $20 at Best Buy (I swore to all the deities of the universe that it was $10 on the BB site this morning, my apologies Kreegs)... You're totally foolish if you don't get it NOW...
I looked when you told me and it was listed at $10. But when I looked on the web site it said "Sold out online." Now it is listed at 20 and its still sold out online. What the heck. Someone screwed up at best buy! haha. I would still pay $20. I will get it in the near future.
