Default What happened to the 5000 points cards

I mean When Nintendo Released there silly DSi they annouced that they be releasing 1000 3000 & 5000 points cards & for i welcomed the idea of the 5000 points cards meaning no mlonger i need to by 2 2000 points cards everytime & now i just need to but 1 5000 points cards .

Fast forward a few months all we got now is the 1000 points cards .
Thanks to Nintendo i have to buy twice the number of cards & performe twice the number of keystrokes on my USB keyboard .

Come on Nintendo pull your fingures out because its smelly up there .

Japan only I believe. Here, you can get up to 3000, but mostly online. Most stores only have 2000 here (Toys-R-Us had 1000).

Or of course, you could save money and get a Mastercard or Visa. ;P

Or he could go to his bank and get a visa debit card...not even a credit card.

Seriously, points cards are both a total rip off and a waste of plastic. Online purchasing of points is the way to go. 99% of the time anyone buys a points card they're losing money they could have spent on games if they'd just buy the points online.

I'd bring that number down to 75-80%. It depends on where you live and what kind of deals are offered on cards in stores. Here in Canada, we get charged in USD and pay tax on online points purchases, which means 2000 points usually end up costing us around $24 CDN. Cards in stores are usually priced accordingly, but I've often managed to find them for significantly less, sometimes $17.99 + tax (which comes close to an even $20 for 2000 points), and on a couple notable occasions for as low as $12 to $14 for a 2000 point card as part of a sale or promotion.

Well some places here like Gametraders you can get a 1000 for $15 which is the same cost as via Credit card debt card or Visa gift card .
In terms of wasted plastic you forgot the paper wastage .
Not only theres the plastic of the Points cards & the plastic envelope theres also the cardboard that the points card is reasting on thru it is still mostly plastic with 75% of the plastic being the Points Cards themselves .

When you say buy points online, do you mean directly through the Nintendo shop channel, or do you mean from Amazon or eBay? Because when I buy points in the store I don't get charged any tax, plus I get my 10% employee discount, which means I get 2000 points for 17.99. If I were to buy directly from Nintendo, I would be charged 20.00 plus tax.

I'm talking about buying online from the Wii shop channel. No idea whether what you are talking about is good value or not as you don't specify what country you are from.

Ebay is always worth a look for Wii points. Shops here in the UK are a total rip off, since they cost about £18-£20 for a 2000 points card. On Ebay if you look carefully you can get them for around £15.50-£17. Still quite expensive but still I recomend Ebay, and that also goes for living in Australia.

I'm from the US. Basically it works out to me getting 200 free Wii points out of the 2000 (100 points per dollar for a 20 dollar points card).

yeah that's a slight saving but most people don't have a store discount to reply on. Like Slangman says most stores charge rip-off prices.

In the UK the cost online is £7 (around $11.22) per 1000 points so 2000 points should cost £14 ($22.44) but nearly all shops overcharge to the ration Slangman has indicated.

People often don't know any better or believe they have to have a credit card to buy them online which is totally false.

I'm the same. I have an employee discount and get points cards for 19.99 minus my 10%...never bought points online due to my paranoia of hackers and identity theft that shopping online through a system with no safeguards could entail.

No safeguards? Are you certain of that? I'm fairly sure Nintendo will be using a secure server.

Apparently, my HSBC Debit card will soon expire and be replaced with a Visa Debit card, so here's hoping it happens soon (My card expires in March)

The number of hackers we have in the states, there is no way Nintendo can prevent tie-ins from back doors coming from other Wiis...that I know of. I could be wrong, but why take the risk to save a few cents here and there....at least that is my reasoning for not getting points online. I'm paranoid like that.

most of the hackers are overseas. thats why we cant catch them.

i was told the wii has no firewall, and im sure it doesnt.

i think connecting to the servers should be secure though.

Yeah, it used to be just buying points would use a SSL connection, but now I'm fairly sure the whole shop does. Something like a..er..buttonlogger on a Wii is only possible with outside hardware connected to a PC via cable, and even then that wouldn't work well in recording a number selected with a remote pointer or ministick. I don't see how someone could tap into your Wii from an outside source, either, as it just can't accept any connections like that.
