Default HDTV lag on VC games only

I recently bought a 720p plasma tv and am experiencing significant lag on SMB3 and SMW. I have been doing a bunch of research and have had no luck finding an answer. I tried composite and component cables, put my TV on "game" mode and tried both 480i and 480p. Nothing works. Regular Wii games like Super Mario Galaxy and The force unleashed work just fine. Can someone explain whats going on? I called Nintendo and the TV manufacturer and neither could give me an answer. I have read a number of posts and vaguely understand that there is an issue with SNES and NES games where they must be converted from 50hz to 60hz but haven't heard of a solution. Is there a solution out there? Should I return my TV and try a different one? Would a faster refresh rate 120hz vs 60hz work better?

Thanks
Dave

Are you in Europe?

Are you experience control lag (i.e. you press a button and the associated action takes place later) or are you experiencing overall game slowness?

Have you tried these same games out on the VC/Wii on your old non-plasma TV and they worked just fine?

-No, I live in the US

- I am experiencing control lag. There is a significant lag between pressing the button and seeing Mario jump.

Have you tried these same games out on the VC/Wii on your old non-plasma TV and they worked just fine?

- There is no problem on my old standard definition non-plasma TV

Gotta be the TV then. What's the make and model?

If you still can take it back for a refund/credit, it might be worth taking your Wii in and testing it out on various setups to see if you can find one that works. I don't have any lag that's noticeable to the human eye on my Sharp Aquos.

I have a Sanyo 50" Plasma 720p DP50749. I have a friend with a Sharp Aquos. I am going to try it on his TV and see how it performs. I might have to take mine back.

Your control lag problem should be gone if you activate the interlace mode.

I have performed a system update twice and tried to activate the interlace mode multiple times. I never hear a noise and there has been no improvement. Here are the steps I go through:

1. Start the VC game with the classic controller attached.
2. Push the home button.
3. Remove the classic controller and install the nunchuck.
4. Access the operations guide in the home menu.
5. Press Z + A + 2 at the same time.

Like I said. I don't hear a confirming "beep" like i am supposed to and I don't notice an improvement in the lag.

Can you give the techs. of the TV based on the the sticker on the back/down side ?
Btw, I use normal LCD 720's because they are a lot cheaper in power use and dont really differ much from plasma, I live in a PAL country though but if I would put ntsc on it I wouldnt have difficulities. Maybe its the tech of the plasma that works against you ?! (I dont know for sure) My LCD's are both 60 HZ as far as I know. Though the facts based on HZ arent really relevant anymore its more based as a sales stunt. A flatscreen doesnt make use of the old form of pixels we know that we got in the old TV's, a 50HZ LCD is equal (or even better) to a 100HZ Analog I recently read in some studies. Its because LCD/Plasmas make use of more layers at a time so that pixels arent even to see by the human eye even if it is a 50 HZ LCD. Though the fact about 'digital' sharpness as in 480p,720p and so on has mainly use on the sharpness of the colours and multitaskings on the screen.

Here are the relevant specs from the Sanyo website. There isn't anything significant on the backside of the TV itself.

  • 50" Widescreen Plasma
  • 16:9 Aspect Ratio
  • Native Panel Resolution: 1365 x 768 pixels(WXGA)
  • Screen Saver feature to prevent burn in!
  • Integrated Digital ATSC + Analog NTSC Tuners
  • 191 Total Channels (135 Cable or 135 digital)
  • Receives ATSC signal formats (including 480i/p, 720p and 1080i)
  • 3D-YC Digital Comb Filter
  • Picture/Sound Selections:
  • 3 HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) input
  • 2 Component (Y-Pb-Pr with R/L audio) inputs
  • 1 S-Video Input (overides composite input)
  • 1 Composite Input (V,L/R)
  • 1 ATSC-Digital RF Input (75ohm)
  • 1 RF Input ( Analog/Digital Antenna In)

Normally when this is ATSC (American standard, like DVB T in EU) this confirms that it is an NTSC capable product, is your Wii NTSC ?

I am assuming it is NTSC since I bought it in the US and all of the labeling seems to be for the US but I don't know how to tell for sure.

Regarding the link, I have Wii licensed component cables and i still have a lag.

Do you test it on 16:9 or 4:3 ? Sometimes it can help when you lower the res. Though 9 of 10 times it has mostly to do with your TV's refresh rate, but I doubt that is to question if you use a Wii on a new plasma.

If you don't get the confirm-sound/message from the interlace-mode then you have not activated it! I can't see what you're doing wrong though.
Switching on interlace mode has helped others with control lagging on Plasma TV's.
I have no other idea.

I thought the component cable interlace mode was only for PAL games. That would be why he's not getting any confirmation chime.

thats what i thought too (about interlace mode being for pal)

everything works fine on my plasma. test it on other tvs, then you will know if its the tv. so far, thats sounds like the issue, which is kinda weird and not awesome news for you, im sure.

When I play my wii on my hdtv, there is a considerable amount of lag with the remote. Like when i move it across the screen, it doesn't move at the exact time creating a whiplash effect. And even the buttons too-when i press one, the action doesn't happen until a half a second later.I download a VC game and play it on my HDTV will it be widescreen or will it come in 4:3 with the bars on the side..or does the game look good on a widescreen set?

With the HDTV just take it back like the other person did i don't have a wii so i'm not sure about the VC games being 4:3 or 16:9 but I'm pretty sure it would be 4:3 unless they have remade the game.
