Lightbulb Mario Kart Wii VC-Forums League

Welcome to the Mario Kart Wii VC-Forums Leage, or just MKWVFL for short. I, Trapster, am one of your hosts. Flamin Skull being the other one.

The league/tourney is now an open one (this means that anyone can participate) with a/possible prize/prizes for the winner.

Alright, sorry for these changes but it's once again an ongoing league without seasons. This way, people can join at anytime instead of being less motivated when joining late during a season. There'll be a"Gift cup" at the end (Name will be decided through a poll). These races will be played in order of the cups but the Gift Cup will be randomized.

The winner of the gift cup will recieve a VC/Wiiware game ranging from 500 to 1000 points of their own choice. Either that, or the 6 participants of the gift cup will throw in a pool of said points each. We'll work out the details later.

A thread will also be created in the near future in which people can nominate names for said Gift Cup. Each person can nominate 1 name, so make it a good one. I'll limit the poll choices to 6 to prevent the votes being spread out too much but I'll use a randomizer to choose what nominations will be included in the poll. More about this in said thread.

A big thanks to Flamin Skull for the great ideas.

Time of the races:
11pm GMT (12am BST), Sundays. There will be a waiting time of 15 minutes for people to join. Should you miss this time limit, you miss out on the round and get no points.

Here's the timezone converter. For some reason it's 1 hour behind.
http://www.timezoneconverter.com/cgi-bin/tzc.tzc

Next up: Shell Cup

Please tell me your in-game alias.

We can probably fit way more than 12, since it's doubtful that all 12 folks would show up for every race. But if we do have more than 12, I guess it becomes a first-come first-served scenario.

Anyway, I'll play. My friend code might be in my profile. I don't know my username in-game (it's just the name of whatever Mii you're using, right?).

We'd need to GET more than 12 people first. And it's the name of the Mii, yeah.

I don't think that should be any problems. We don't have a date yet, however. There're more that needs to be planned.

What's your in-game name, btw?

Okay, I'll try to join in with you guys. I would only be able to fit this in at a reasonable time on my weekends, though. My timezone is GMT +10.

FC: 2277-7336-9505
Name: Currently my Mii is named 'Fat Boy' made out of symbols, but I'll be changing that soon to MasterGH.

You are already added in the list, though. I typed the people on who had shown interest already when I made the thread.

@MasterGH: We'll do our best to find times when most people can play.

Edit: Would the rest of you mind posting your FC so I can add them to the list in the first post?

To make any kind of scoring system work, you will have to enforce a minimum attendance rule, otherwise someone could log on for two races, win both, never race again, and get an unfair bonus to their scoring.

Perhaps the best way to run it is to do groups of four races (either grand prix or chosen/randomised), and allocate points based on final results. So someone who wins the group gets fifteen points, while someone who comes fifth overall gets seven points. Then you can do a league table where you can have a "groups" column and a "points" column.

Or you can do a really, really basic league where you have a "races" column and a "points" column, and you just add up all the points from the individual races. It's ugly, but it does have the advantage of showing exactly how many races they've done, which would help in tie breaks (ie, the person who's done most races would win in a tie, and if its still equal, they can go into a three-race "play off" to decide).

Well, we got 11 people so far. I'd like one more at least. And thanks for the suggestions. And man, I need some more assistance with this. Nothing bad about Shoemaker or anything but he's just not active enough.

I would be up for it, but I can't guarantee that I will be available for each race.

It's good enough, I guess. Btw, we need to decide in what way to tally the points and what program to use for it.

Should I add you to the list?

Yeah, go ahead, add me to the list, although as I say, I can't guarantee I'll be around for every race. My screen name is "Kay".

As for the points, just use the system already in place in the game: 15 points for a win, down to 0 for twelfth place. We can put the rankings in the first message of this thread, or in a new thread.

1st: 15pts
2nd: 12pts
3rd: 10pts
4th: 8pts
5th: 7pts
6th: 6pts
7th: 5pts
8th: 4pts
9th: 3pts
10th: 2pts
11th: 1pts
12th: 0pts

I would suggest that we use a similar system to Formula 1, in which we allocate points per race, as above. Anyone who does not attend or finish a race gets zero points. Let's do four races per "meet", chosen at random.

Oh, and it would be helpful to have the Wii numbers in the first message, alongside the friend codes.

Alright. Now I just need LinkFanatic's and Flamin Skulls' codes and in-game names. Jogurt and Shoemaker needs to confirm their in-game names too.

Btw, should we add eachother before we begin or use the button in-game?

Well, I'll be away on Thursday =/ But I would be able to try from 2PM onwards on Friday my time, or virtually any time on Saturday. Again, the evils of my eastern Australian time zone make it tricky.

Well, you're in Sweden, right? At the moment I'm pretty sure you're 8 hours behind me. So, 2PM my time on Friday would be 6AM your Friday.

I might be able to play from around 4PM onwards today (8AM Thursday for you), just depends on when I get back from my midday trip.

Default need help/suggestions?

Finally, someone have managed to set up a new Mario Kart league...

I'm not gonna participate, sadly MKW didn't catch on me so hard, and I didn't play it long enough to reach a satisfying competitive level (for my standards based on previous MK, of course).

But because the championship of the last year turned out quite well, I thought some suggestions from me may help Trapster avoiding critical moments.

1) Take one (or more!) snapshot at the end of each meeting
Although I asked everybody to write down their final position and points, I noticed several people weren't fast enough with their posts or didn't report here both infos...in short: try to be the most independent you can; the fastest and more reliable solution was for me to take pictures of the final screen and do all the calculations myself.

2) Tracking the podiums earned by each driver
This is something I liked to do last year and of course it meant I had to write down the first 3 positions after each race. Didn't use a camera here, just wrote down very fast the first 3 names....In reality I didn't actually write the names down, but had a little application where I only had to choose names from a list and the program took track of the records by itself.

3) Sync everybody for the race
If you want I can let you use the web app I set up for the last year's meetings. I can follow this thread and update the page with your race details or even give the code to you if you happen to have a PHP based website.

4) Don't change the points attribution system
Do not follow MK's floating "jackpot" that changes the points you earn based on how many players are running.
The first should always earn 15 points. This is very important for long running championships as the one you're planning.

Ok, hope this will ease your job, I know some suggestions were obvious, but as I said, last year I had a lot of fun setting up the League and thought my help could have been....helpful... : |

Good luck everybody.

PS.
If you decide you need to contact me, please send me a PM as I'm visiting these forums with less frequency and I may not notice some answers here.

This is perhaps my last week to play until September. Next week I start the 2 week "band camp" at the university. All I will have time to do is drum all day. haha

if we could put off starting it until september that would be great. I dont get internet in my apartment until then. Right now I am just taking advantage of the free internet at my university across the street while sitting outside. If you could wait until september that would be sooooo awesome.

I would assume September would be fine. From what I've heard Trapster still has a few more things to work out, and more people might want to join. It'd also be better if we did it late September, this way we won't interfer with the people who are in both this league, and the Yogurt Cup.

Hm. If more people joins, we'll have to split the participants in half and also tally the points a bit differently...I think? Now, imagine the winners of both groups (each time we race) getting 15 points. It'd be fair but due to the point distribtution it'd add less variation in the ranks.

I'm not saying that more people can't join, however. And I believe we're pretty much set. We'll just need to create some kind of trophy/trophies for the top 3 in the league. We'll use that web app neuzd linked to but we need to configure it first.

Edit: Also: DO you guys want to play regular cups/GPs or ones with randomized stages?
