Post Wii U doesn't play GameCube games

Terrible news for fans of Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis who thought the Xbox version was missing a certain something. A Nintendo spokesperson recently told Giant Bomb that the company's upcoming Wii U console won't be able to play GameCube discs like its predecessor.

It's kind of a disappointment. GameCube support on the Wii was like a charming, nursing-home-bound grandma. No, we never really visited her, but we liked knowing she was alive.

Basically what we're saying is that Nintendo killed your grandma.

Well then if the Super Wii (I refuse to call it Wii U) can't play the actual Cube disks, then they will be obviously be offered on its virtual console service (that is if Cube games are offered).

This is a shock? Most systems these days are backwards compatible with only the previous system.

Not a surprise. Maybe we will see Gamecube games added to the VC for Wii U (what a stupid name).

Not surprising, but still disappointing. Get ready to pay $30-40 for games you could find in stores and on eBay for $2-5.

Like I mention in another thread yesterday I Expect Nintendo to be the last company to overestimate the number of people with Cable Internet connection's.
You & I might have cable & able to download 8GB within a couble of hours with zero timeout errors but most people still stuck on DSL which takes forever if it's too many megabytes plus Timeout errors ect, ect, ect.

So I don't think there be too many games on the Wii U shop that is bigger than 200MB in size.

This is the console where they are going to try and move beyond being known as the last gen console. I think to survive this thing needs to have big downloadable games like it's competition. No one knows more than I, how many people still use DSL, but most gamers who aren't limited by what their parents currently have I would hope have updated to cable because they will soon be left in the gaming dust.

Well, backwards compatibility is better than downloads regardless. Look at the outcry when Sony scrapped PS2 BC from the PS3s.

Listen, not offering backwards compatibility on a new console is not a necessarily a bad idea in and of itself. But this is a same-generation console as the Wii; Nintendo has claimed they want to run them at the same time. Offering a newer console without a feature alongside an older console with that feature is a horrendous idea. Normally, yes, being able to download big retail games would be a plus, but it's not a plus when they're trying to use huge/expensive downloadable titles as a selling point against a competing product that will play the original retail products natively.

Most PS3's aren't even backwards compatible with PS2 games, so at least it's a step up from what Sony are currently offering.

No, the Wii 1.5 is the functionally a part of the same generation as the PS3 and Xbox 360. Everything from system capabilities to calendar timing to software libraries. Wii 1.5's announced third-party games are so far PS360 ports.

3DS and Vita may very well be next-portable-gen, but since portables follow their own odd schedules, that point is moot.

.
You know, I am one of the lucky ones with cable internet, and I made the most of it. I think I have more VC games and WiiWare than the actual Wii disk games. However, cable internet can still be slow and have timeout errors at times (esp over a wireless link to the router, which I also have, and my bandwidth is 8MB!).

All in all, yeah, cable is better than DSL (connect to the 'net like it's 1999!)

Well my wireless router isn't that bad but it's obviously slightly slower than the cable Internet itself.

Plus the signal power itself is another thing as depending on the Wi-fi device plus the particular nations limits on output power can cause timeouts.

Here in Australia generally Wi-fi products are allowed to oupt full power signal but over in the US they only allowed to output quarter of the power & quite often the firmware within these devices prevents the power output to be increase.

Because of that a breef loss of signal can cause timeouts.

I'm in the minority that is willing to trade download speed for upload speed, so I actually switched from cable to DSL when it became available.

Of course, the cable service in my area isn't all that much better anyway.

Yeah, that was such a ****ty move. >:[

Anyway, I think we're wrong to assume GC games will be offered as downloads. They'll be offered as souped up Wii games (like the New Play Control! series) or as compilations on Wii U discs (I imagine we'll get 2 to 4 games to a disk, like the old Game Boy and Game Boy Color games that had 2 to 4 lousy arcade ports on them). I think Nintendo still has some profit to squeeze out of this sort of method of distribution before it becomes more profitable to switch over to digital distribution only.

I just done a quick calculation on my touch & it appears that a Wii U disc can hold about 17 GameCube games so they can easily do compilations.

Yeah, and a 17 GameCube compilation on a Wii U disc would be sweet--I'd even be willing to pay a fair amount if it was all games I liked/thought were awesome... But therein lies the issue. It's easier to make a disc with 2 titles many people agree are awesome and are willing to pay a premium for than to make a disc with 17 titles many people agree are awesome are willing to pay a premium for. That's ignoring any potential issues like how those 17 games would likely need to come from the same publisher.

I could see Nintendo releasing some compilations, just look at the library of Nintendo published games:

Mario Party 4
Mario Party 5
Mario Party 6
Mario Party 7
Mario Power Tennis
Mario Superstar Baseball
Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour
Mario Kart Double Dash
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Mario Sunshine
Animal Crossing
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Ocarina of Time Master Quest
The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2
random Pokemon game

There will definitely be upscaled compilations. It's been a lucrative business on the PS3 so far. But don't expect more than a few games on each one. Just because they can fit 17 GCN games onto one disc doesn't mean they will. They have profits to think about.

Bad news. Nintendo should have kept Game Cube backward compatibility.

Well here's one question here, How many Wii owners out there actually used the GameCube's backwards compatibility?

While I do own a GameCube, however it primarily belongs to my family. Therefore I resort to using the Wii to play what little GameCube games I own, I just recently played Eternal Darkness and Baten Kaitos on it.

The only time I would really use their GameCube is so I can use the Game Boy Player on it.

It's much easier to do then get my GC out every time. Only have to get my GC out for imports and GB Player.

I use my Wii as a GC player. Turned the GC into a necklace + half-finished plant holder. Not like I was using it for anything else.

I use the GCN's backwards compatibility quite a bit... In fact, I think I've played more GCN games on the Wii than I have on my old GCN.

Well i did not like this Soul Calibur on wii, the 2 is a 3D fighting game and has Link as playable character. Can you name some good 3d fighting games on wii?

Excluding Smash Bros. Brawl, not really. Taksumoko* vs. Capcom might be a pretty good fighting game though.

*Spell check doesn't work right now.
