Default SSBB Tournament - The Yogurt Cup III

Welcome one and all to THE YOGURT CUP III: THE RANDOMIZER!, the long-awaited third official installment in the Virtual Console Forums' Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament league.

To register, all you have to do is post here with your SSBB Friend Code and the nickname attached to your code in the game's Friend Roster. A lot of them can easily be found elsewhere, but for the sake of ease of organization (and to make sure none of us is forgetting anybody), it's easy enough to repost them here. I'll update this first post as a list of registered participants. See the next post for rules.

NOTE to everyone: This isn't a competitive tournament! There is no prize! If you think you suck, that's no reason not to join. If you think you're going to lose every match, that's no reason not to join. The point of this tournament is to foster community among forum members and get people playing Brawl with one another for fun.

Join up! The more the better! I want 16 players!

Congratulations to digiki, the champion of the last tournament and the current holder of the Yogurt Cup.

Congratulations also to RADE, the champion of the last special edition tournament and the current holder of the Frozen Yogurt Cup.

ROUND ROBIN MATCH SETUP

The randomized setup for each match in the round-robin part of the tournament can be found in this post, #169 of this thread. For easier reading, copy and paste it to a text document with word wrap disabled.

RULES

Back due to popular demand, this tournament maintain the double-elimination format of the first two tournaments, seeded by a 1-on-1 round robin. If necessary, depending on the number of entrants, a single-elimination qualifying round will be used to screen low-seed participants.

DROPPED/ERROR MATCHES

If a match drops or disconnects, the players must restart the match with the same characters and with the same stock levels as when the match was interrupted.

If for some reason one of the players has accidentally selected the wrong stage or the wrong item options, the match must be cancelled and restarted immediately.

STAGE 1: ROUND-ROBINS

During this round, every registered participant will play every other registered participant once. The round-robins will be 1-on-1 matches with standardized rules. BOTH PLAYERS must set the same item rules for them to be effective during these matches.

FORMAT: Time
TIME: RANDOM! (See Below.)

SCHEDULING: Round-robins can be scheduled at the discretion of the participants. Just before the tournament begins (when I know how many participants there will be) I will set a generous deadline for the last day round-robins must be completed.

This means it's up to YOU to schedule your matches for the first round. If you have a certain day that you have hours free to brawl, feel free to schedule several of your matches for that period. If someone misses several matches, his or her matches will be counted as "unofficial" so that they do not unfairly affect other brawlers' stats, and s/he will receive the lowest ranking going into the elimination round.

SCORING: After each match, I am going to want to know what each player's +/- was. That means how many KOs, how many Falls, and how many SDs. Simply post the results in the main thread immediately after your match so you don't forget. Both players should feel free to post the results, to serve as a kind of confirmation of accuracy.

STAGE 2: SEEDING and SINGLE-ELIMINATION QUALIFIERS

After I have received all of the results of the round-robins, I will compile them and combine them with the standings from the first two Yogurt Cups to seed participants into a double-elimination bracket.

If there is an odd number of participants, making bracketing difficult, we will have single-elimination qualifiers to make low-seed participants compete for the final spots in the tournament. This is the easiest way, and it's fair because it rewards the good players and makes the players with bad records have to compete harder to qualify.

STAGE 3: DOUBLE-ELIMINATION MAIN EVENT

Once all of the seeding has been taken care of, we're free to start the main event! This is going to be a double-elimination 1-on-1 tournament, with the winner of each match staying in the Super Nintendo Bracket, and the loser dropping down into the Virtual Boy Bracket. Losers in the Virtual Boy Bracket are eliminated from the tournament. If you find yourself in the lower bracket, don't give up! You can still fight your way back to a spot in the finals! This has happened before!

FORMAT: Stock
STOCK: RANDOM! (See Below.)

We will work out scheduling for this part of the tournament when we get there.

THE YOGURT CUP III: THE RANDOMIZER!

This tournament is going to be extremely unfair, frustrating, and hilarious! Super-competitive "serious" Brawl players with sticks stuck in certain orifices need not apply. Nearly everything in this tournament is going to be RANDOMIZED, from the characters you can use to the stages on which you'll find, from the length of time matches to the items that are disabled.

The purpose of this tournament is to have a good laugh and to test your skills when you're put into a situation in which you might not normally be comfortable. Never use Marth? Better hope the RANDOMIZER is friendly!

I will post the rules for each match before it is set to take place. REMEMBER that both players must set the same rules in their menu/options before starting the match for them to take effect, otherwise you may have to cancel out of a match and start over.

Let's have a good time with this one!

I'd be glad to join this time around even though I think I'll be last. I'll get my information later tonight.

Mine too! But it's just in good fun anyway. All that record-keeping above is just my stat obsession at work.

What's your friend code / brawl nick?

Don't remember the info myself, I trust the info from the last cup was correct:
Tides of Chaos (Tides), 3394 3229 3214

This should be exciting. I personally choose random quite often when choosing characters in local matches. Hopefully with my practice in this field of randomness, I will be able to climb out of what is currently last place.

Digiki (Benjy), 0387-8467-4163

So about this randomized time and stock, is there a reasonable limit on how much there is?

I'm thinking it will be randomized between 4-6 minutes. Maybe 3-6 minutes. Thoughts and feelings on this, folks?

A random number between 1 and 99! Good luck everyone!

For items, rather than set every item on a random on/off switch (since it would take 100 years for me to do every match individually like that, and it would take the players 100 years to carefully set each item for each match), I think I'll probably pick a random number between 0-5 to determine how many items will be on, and then randomly select which ones.

So some matches could have no items. Some matches could have 2 random items (Final Smash and bunny ears). Some matches could have 5 ridiculous items. The frequency will also be random.

For characters, rather than have people select random from the roster at the character select screen, I'm going to randomize them with a chart and a random number generator and then send them out to each player via PM. This has two benefits. 1: It prevents people from just picking a character they like and saying they chose random. 2: Since they'll be PM'd (rather than posted in-thread like the rest of the rule settings), the opponents won't be able to tell in advance what character you're going to choose.

Shouldn't be too bad in one-on-one. If it is, then we'll just complain through it. The more the merrier!

I'm interested, I miss theses tournaments, although I must say I've lost alot of skill, but who cares.

When do you plan on closing the registration, when you have 16 players? I currently don't have internet, but I should have it by August 1st. I'd like to join, but I'm not going to sign up until I know I'll be able to play.

If you get enough players before I have internet no worries, I'm sure there will be another tournament down the road. Although concidering my past tournament status, I'm excited to join and see how I fare this time around.

August 1st is a long way off, my good man! I'd like to wait for you, but people are chomping at the bit. By the time you get online, though, the tourney should be in full swing and you can get in on the practice/fun matches.

It'll be open for a while yet sir! We can take more than 16! That was just how many people I wanted to have at minimum to make a rockin' tourney. Post your info if you want in.

Name: LNKFN
Code: 2450-2610-5009

Question, though...when my Wii got stolen back in January, I had everything replaced a month later. I haven't played Brawl since I replaced it, so I have nothing but the basic things. Nothing is unlocked, so do I even qualify for the rules and stuff seeing how I have nothing unlocked?

Hmm... that's a good point...

You have about a week to unlock everything.

Worst case scenario, I could just randomize your matches with the starting stuff.

You can check a FAQ for the fastest/easiest ways to unlock stuff. All you'd need to unlock is the stages and the characters.

If you play online, all that matters is that one person has everything unlocked...

Not if Link hasn't unlocked the character the randomizer assigns to him. He can still only select stuff that he's unlocked. The other guy can select whatever he wants. We'll see how this works out.

Link, before we start the tourney I'll ask you for an update on what you've unlocked at that point.
