Default The House of the Dead: Overkill

So, this game looks simply awesome. The only criticism I've heard is that the over-the-top M-ratedness of the game gets old after a couple chapters, and that the game itself is actually fairly short.

So I have a couple of questions. For the 4-6 people here who have this game already, what are your complaints with it so far? Are the above criticisms true? Is there any kind of leaderboard / high score feature? Unlockables for replay value?

Finally, the only ways to get the game where I live are for $59.99 + tax in stores or for $49.99 + tax (would end up being $57.49) at Amazon. I found a guy selling his copy (apparently his wife didn't like it) for $40 even. Do I do it?

Every ad I've seen for this game (and the back of the box) makes prominent mention that one of the characters is a stripper. Apparently, she "has two deadly weapons", har har! I wish I was making that tagline up.

Despite the fact that the makers had so little faith in their own product that they felt they had to resort to "boobies, lol!" to sell the game, from what I hear, it's actually pretty good. If you can get it at $40, I'd say go for it.

This game is an instant Gem on the Wii. I recommend it and the Handcannon highly. I don't know why it would be so hard to find in Canada. I don't really have any complaints. It's a very funny game and if the liberal dropping of F-bombs isn't your thing then you can skip the cutscenes. There are highscore tables and a slew of unlockables. As well as an unlockable mode for beating the game and another mode for beating that. Get it any way you can.

Actually, Varla Gunns is a humour device mostly, as someone who has actually played the game through, its obvious that the game doesn't need the 'boobies' card to suceed, it does that on its own merits.

It's not really hard to find, it's just expensive. And I definitely won't be getting it with the Handcannon. I've never even seen one of those anywhere. Will the Zapper work alright with this game?

EDIT: For what it's worth, I'm definitely getting this game. This is just a question of getting it now, or waiting for a price drop and getting it used for like $20 some months from now.

The game doesn't use the Nunchuk at all, so it'll just be sitting in its slot really. If you're trying to get high scores, you'll eventually have to just use only the Wii Remote anyway for speed.

I never said it did need it. I've heard nothing bad about the game, so I'm pretty sure it doesn't need the bewbs to sell, which is one reason why it's particularly offensive.

I really enjoyed it.

Once you complete it it unlocks the Director's Cut that features new areas, longer levels and limited continues.

There are a ton of unlockable weapons, upgrades, movies, music and images if you care to do things like get super accuracy targets or focus on a particular type of shot.

The combo system also adds a lot and gives high score junkies something to play for. It also has mini games for up to four player multi player fun (survival, target practice and protect civillians).

As for the Varla thing, she's not really in it that much and there is far more offensive material than breasts in this game. The main selling point is zombies and guns and the *wow* factor of seeing something so dodgy on the Wii.

It sounds like the Perfect Shot without the 'chuk attached would be the best solution for me, then. I'll see if I can't find a cheap one somewhere.

$40 would probably push me to get it and I'm not the biggest shooter fan.

Warning: Spoiler Below.
Thanks to Destructoid I learned of the overpowered assault rifle. When you have this it makes the game VERY easy to breeze through when you earn enough for it in the Director's Cut. Scoring is harder though as it's erratic firing will nix any combos you are trying to build up unless you are very careful.

Got it, haven't played it yet. Probably going to do some multiplayer tomorrow with a friend of mine. Will post impressions then.

Seems odd that it'd be so expensive in Canada - it was surprisingly cheap here in Australia, the box set (game + slipcase + comic + Hand Cannons x 2) retailed for $90AUD which is the same price that games like Galaxy go for on their own. The box set was a no-brainer for me.

The game itself is almost pitch-perfect. Nails the whole style, (mostly) funny, and the twist at the end is... wow. Shooting the zombies feels so much more visceral than the older games, and I like that they'll really **** you up if they get in close, unlike in the other games where they back up after every shot. The different weapons are fun but really unbalanced - the shotguns are so much better than everything else it's not even funny. Calibration is good and can be done on the fly, and beating Directors' Cut unlocks a dual-wield mode - hell yes! My only complaints are that the bosses look great but are too easy, and there are little hiccups just before you fire your weapon when there are a lot of zombies on screen - annoying, but not a deal-breaker.

Yeah, ouch. I've never even seen a box set version anywhere I've gone. Oh well, I probably wouldn't have paid full price for this game anyway, but I'm glad to have got it for a decent second hand price (mint condition, no stickers) just a week after the release date.

The Bang Bang box is only availible in Australia.

Still playing - trying to stockpile 10000 in story mode.

Tonight is the first time I've ever played this single-player. I've cleared the game a couple times in multiplayer with different friends.

Single-player is way harder! I got my ass handed to me on the first stage! I have to relearn how to play the levels.

Great game though.

I'm of the opinion that this game is uh-maz-ing. It really feels like HOTD2 but, you know, grindhouse style. I love those kinds of exploitation films and SEGA nailed the presentation. The levels are inventive and engaging and the bosses managed to creep me right the **** out (Jasper Guns stands out). Characters are awesome, too. The one thing that would make this game perfect is if I had those super cool hand cannon shells.

Just beat Story Mode tonight in 2P with my friend. We continued where we left off last month. When we were done, we restarted in Director's Cut and immediately bought the Assault Rifle and jacked it full of upgrades.

Pretty fun game. There are a lot of little achievements that I don't know whether I'll be able to get anytime soon... but whatever. The main draw of this game for me is still blowin' **** up and upgrading weapon collections.
