Punch-Out!! definitely is damn good. River City Ransom (which you mentioned) is also damn good, especially with another player. I'd rank them both as top tier NES games.

But which top tier game SHOULD I get? I'm thinking Punch Out! myself.

Default Secret of Mana

For many people this game needs no introduction, but I wholeheartedly recommend Secret of Mana (SNES). It is quite possibly the best action-RPG ever made. The graphics are excellent and the soundtrack is outstanding and memorable. There are a wide variety of weapons and items, and with three characters the battles get pretty hectic. You can cycle between characters by pressing a button, and the game uses a solid and customizable AI to control your allies. Fighting is mostly quick strategy, it is not just another mindless hack and slash affair.

The single player game is a lot of fun, but where Secret of Mana REALLY shines is in cooperative multiplayer. If you have one or two friends to play this game with, get it. It is an absolute blast.

Default Star Parodier and Sin & Punishment.

My recommendations: Star Parodier and Sin & Punishment.

Star Parodier 900 Wii Points:

Who could have though that a parody of an awesome game would make it slightly better? Well, this is the game! Star Parodier is a parody of the Soldier games such as Star Soldier, Final Soldier and the WiiWare game Star Soldier R. It's just like the previous games and by that I meen it's still a solid vertical scrolling shoot'em-up with power-ups and bosses. However, this time you can actually play as different characters such as Bomberman, PC-Engine and Paro-Ceasar and each has different Power-ups and a likes. There are 8 cutesy, cartoony stages with different themes and they are all very innovative and have fun and innovative bosses. There are also the two classic 2 and 5 minute modes where the only thing you do is to wrack up points. So as you can imagine there are tons of things to do in this game. Buy it before anything else on the VC. And then you can buuuuy....

SIN & PUNISHMENT 1200 Wii Points.

Yes... It is really expensive... But it's worth it. Sin & Punishment is probably the best on-rail shooter ever. The story is "!@#*!!1" and the gameplay is simple but can take a while to get used too. It's really short but it will keep you entertained for a long time. It's one of those games, even it doesn't have any endless mode or something it's still just fun to play it over and over again. It's hard to describe why it's worth your 1200 Wii Points. But it's just a very fun game. Watch DEMON212's review on YouTube to find out more ^^

Well... There are some more games that I can't describe but there are extremly fun anyway.

Cho Aniki 900 WP: What... Is this... Gay... Odd... Gay...
Crack Down 900 WP: Awesome Co-Op game where you shoot people.
Alien Crush 700 WP: Pinball + Aliens = WIN!
Devil's Crush 700 WP (I belive...): Pinball + More Aliens + Creepy animations = WIN!!
Super Mario RPG 800/900 (US/EU) WP: Trust me... It is super over-rated but I understand why. It really is the best RPG ever.

That makes little sense, what are you trying to say?

Anyways Star Fox 64 blows S&P out of the water.

Konami (Parodius) did it first.

I can't really explain why I love SF but its one of my top 5 fave games.

I'll still probably only get Sin And Punishment for the VC, but now you've made me think about picking up an original N64 Star Fox 64 cartridge (if only my parents let me buy games, because the only way I can get it is online; I have to go to Game Stop after school if I want a game ).

I haven't played Landstalker, but BoFII is great, probably the best turn-based RPG on the VC, unless Phantasy Star IV is as great as they say.

If you like Zelda type action RPGs go for Landstalker but the isometric jumping sections may get tiresome. Breath of Fire sounds more like your cup of tea.

Pretty timely recommendation...

Of the arcade titles up now, I recommend... all of them! Mappy is 500 points, the rest are 600 points if I remember correctly.

Mappy (alongside Pac-Man, DigDug, and various others) are also available on Wii through "Namco Museum Remix". Just saying.

Harvest Moon 64

The SNES is up there but come on, raising chickens and tilling your fields is not as pleasing in anything but N64's 3D. Get on it!!!!! I grow bored.

I recommend anything but the N64 titles on VC because many of them,e.g Super Mario 64, Mario kart 64, Zelda: Ocarina, etc, have a bug in them that whan the "The End" screen is displayed, the game freezes and you can only continue by either turning off the wii or resetting the game. This is fine for titles with autosave like Mario Kart, but games such as Super Mario 64, which has a manul saving system, you can't complete them because you need to save the game.

This is no bug, that is what happened in the original carts for the N64.

Just got my first 2000 Wii points, I'll use this to help decide which to get first. Leaning towards the original Mario games or Mario Lost Levels with Super Metroid.

SKTTR's suggestion is a great one for 1600 points. For extra value you could try Super Metroid, Super Mario Bros., and Super Mario Bros. 3 for 1800 points.

Personally, I'd recommend

Super Metroid
Castlevania Rondo Of Blood

But you'd probably be better off listening to the other guys.

Firstly, Super Mario World isn't the greatest game on the portables because of screen resolution. Rondo is pretty poorly emulated on the PSP also. I would say something about Super Mario World 2, but it's not on VC yet, so that doesn't really matter. Anyways, that being said, you can probably stick with your inferior versions of great games in lieu of getting more games. So what game should you get with Super Metroid, with Super Mario World (and really, you don't need more Mario games) and Super Metroid?

ACT RAISER!
The variety, and the way the two genres mix is simply incredible. Great music, graphics, and just a very addictive game. In the words of others, Act Raiser is a dissapointingly unique expirience.

I got Super Metroid and Act Raiser. Only played Act Raiser so far and it's pretty fun. Just got rid of all the "bases" in the first town and saved before going into some hole. Is there a worse feeling than being forced to sit by and watch you town be burned and townsfolk being carried away with me being able to do nothing about it waiting for my arrows to return.

I've never lost all of my health so far, so I'm glad I haven't felt that yet. Yeah, Act Raiser is fantastic.

Default some N64 recomendations

Hi i recently find some past mini reviews a made over N64 games, I revised them and like post them in here if you allow it. Everything is just MHO and to the administrator, feel free to relocated it if is necessary.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
10/10
N64 cartridge
For a lot of people "The best game ever made", for me one of the best games ever made tied with chrono trigger. The graphics are good even for today, the music is fantastic, the controls are great, the puzzle are well developed and the story is the same of previous games but with some flavor (sheik for example). Any N64 owner, Nintendo player, casual gamer, hardcore gamer, every mom and dad and child and grandparent....everyone must play a Zelda game any time in their lives...And if you can play OoT better…I´m waiting for the 3DS version. I would marry Miyamoto for this, shame he is ugly, a man and ... an ugly man...if at least he were an ugly bride...

Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber
9
VIRTUAL CONSOLE
The best tactic game a found in the N64, I have it in VIRTUAL CONSOLE because I can´t afford de physical cartridge, the story is mainly about stabbing people on their backs, in the graphics the field is a little rare with the polygonal background below sprites the units have good art, but everything do the job.

Paper Mario
9
N64 cartridge
The most charming, funny and engaging RPG in the N64 hand down, Mario and helpers have a good set of moves, pictures and text story…funny and enjoyable….my little sister ask me to play this game just for watch and practice some English.

Perfect Dark
9
N64 cartridge
I´m not a shooter fan but this one likes me a lot, the multiplayer mode is polished from Goldeneye, the difficulty is adjusted in every level and you can go in cooperative multiplayer mode..Really shines in the N64 Catalogue.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
9
N64 cartridge
I liked Ocarina of time the most, but the graphics and the textures are better in here (not a lot but you can notice it), a masterpiece and a must have for the N64 gamers.

F-Zero X
9
N64 cartridge
My favorite racing game ever…and I have played Grand Turismo 5 and Forza 3…guest the futuristic racing is more appealing to me. The graphics are horrible for 2011 standards but the speed and gameplay of the game does not suffer a bit. You can chose from a lot of character and the possibility of destroy your enemies cars or simply send them out of the track is delightful.

Mario Tennis
9
N64 cartridge
Really good sports game, and not have new versions, the graphics are blocky but colorful, the control is awesome and the modes of play are rich. Great for playing in group (2 or 4). Well deserve note.

Star Fox 64
9
N64 cartridge
I have the DS and SNES version and this (N64) is my favorite, the smooth control over the Arwing and the All range mode missions are exciting, the replayability is huge because of the multiple roads you can take every time and is challenging for everyone, the newbie for the mission complete factor and the pros can get the records and the mission accomplished messages. And additionally you can shoot Slippy out the sky (I hate slippy)

Super Mario 64
9
N64 cartridge
The first really good 3D adventure game…all the other must bow before the blocky N64 Mario, the control is clean and responsive even for 2011 standards, the music is classic, the opportunity of grabbing Bowser´s tail and smashing him to a bomb is precious.

Jet Force Gemini (Star Twins en Japón)
8
N64 cartridge
Juno is OK, Vela is OK, the dog is the King, you can find a lot of betters 3er person adventure/action games today but in the N64 era this was fresh and even now 2011 is really entertained of play, the sniper mode, machine gun or rocket launcher are different one from another and this is really good...I just hate the tribal bear you must save because they keep dying for no reason (the granede was evident..you must run...stup.. bears)

Mario Kart 64
8
N64 cartridge
I admit that I have not played this a lot since Mario Kart Wii basically because once you finish the 1 player mode the multiplayer is the reason for this game and my friends prefer the wii version. I own the sliding technique learning to this game and because of that is in my heart...a lot of races I have won because of you Mario Kart 64

Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Earth

VIRTUAL CONSOLE
Fast and furious, I can´t really catch up with the weird japanes postapocaliptyc theme right on...but it does not matter because the action is nonstop, the music is great and the control is really good even with the classic control for the wii. Because of being a import just could play it in Virtual Console.

Killer Instinct Gold

N64 cartridge
Cooooombo breaker!!!...please Nintendo, please Rare allow other game to someone!!! Please please!!!. It does not matter the console...but Nintendo preferred because the previous ones.

The graphics are good but a little estrange…every person seems to think that the characters are clay dolls. The music is excellent, the gameplay is well done and you can enjoy this with a friend but is imperative that each one can use appropriately at least one character or the game will turn boring.

Yoshi's Story

N64 cartridge
I can tell if yoshi is male o female...but the platformer game after his name is really underrated, in a 3D games era (not the 3DS effect) this game was overshadowed by other games with lees quality. I still play Yoshi´s story and enjoy a lot…not to mention my girlfriend and my sister, the music is really well get, the gameplay is Nintendo trade mark and has a lot of replayability because of multiple paths in every level...if you are really macho play yoshi...if you are doubting of your sexuality keep far from this because is acid cute.

Dr. Mario 64 (sólo América y Japón)

N64 cartridge
Kill viruses aligning colored pills, this version is good because of the multiplayer, but if you own a Wii you must try the Wiiware Dr Mario, Good but is only a version more…this one have a sort of story but really does not give a lot.

Fighters Destiny

N64 cartridge
The graphics are awful, the music is simple, the rooster is short for a fighting game but the gameplay is a little different from other fighting games and accomplish its goal. Is a good game and you can teach more moves to your character…a shame that can unlock every move for a quick play...I hate the joker and the cow in this game, they are hard to beat.

Mario Party 2

N64 cartridge
Is good with other people, boring by yourself…well...is a party. The costumes are a great touch and the minigames are funny, at least the major part of them.

Bomberman 64

N64 cartridge
Is bomberman multiplayer as always, the story mode is good and give you some armor for your characters. If you own a console of this generation (PS3, XBOX360 or WII) you can find the multiplayer online feature in some retail or downloadable bomberman game. I keep it for some nostalgic factor and because of the music.

Donkey Kong 64

N64 cartridge
The return of 2d DK for the Wii was a good move from Nintendo, this 3d version had the problems of other 2d sagas turned 3d (I´m looking at you castlevania and don’t you hide megaman ). Don’t misunderstand me is not a bad game at all, is good, and use the expansion pack well but is not DK Country and the action that you expect from DK was sacrifice for some 10000000 piece puzzle searching. The music is perfect, the controls are excellent, and the graphics pretty, the length of the game is good. But something is missing.

Mace: The Dark Age

N64 cartridge
This is a fighting game, not soul calibur, bloody road, teken, DOA or SF but is one of the best in the N64 catalogue. The characters are cliché from dark times and the motion capture was excellent. I like the intro to the two final bosses.

ClayFighter 63 1/3
4
N64 cartridge
Is plain bad game, the graphics are mediocre, the music is out of place and the gameplay takes half polish concepts, you can play it for a short time and move on. I have it because of the Bugerman, some killer Instinct combos and some SEGA memories
