Default Paper Mario Poll

//

Sorry if this has been asked numerous times but...

Which is the better out of "Paper Mario" and "...The Thousand Year Door"?

I'd like to try one of the instalments in this series and was going to get
"The Thousand Year Door" but the price has gone up recently (as with
mario sunshine... because of galaxy, perhaps?) to about £16 for a
second hand copy. So now I'm thinking of whether to save and get
the N64 release on VC.

I've only played the first one, and it's really a fantastic RPG. Get it now!

I'd say Paper Mario is much better than Thousand Year Door. The GC game is definately the most uninspired of the bunch, Super Paper Mario is better but not really much of improvement over Paper Mario except for a little more humour and the obvious visual/audio aspects.

N64.

TTYD just felt lacking in a way.

N64 is a bit easy though. Still great fun all the same.

Oh, and stay the hell away from Super *shudders*

The one thing I hate about Super Paper Mario is that it gets very boring once you get past the first four chapters. I only made it past chapter 5 then just couldn't be bothered.

Paper Mario is easy, but seems to be a lot of fun - something that both the GC and Wii sequels seem to struggle with.

Bingo.

I also didn't like the new style of play. 2D Platform Mario, with RPG elements and lame puzzles that all require you to pres "A" in order to beat them.

Super paper mario is more of one of those games that are fast to beat but hard to do everything. Also super has the best stroy but out of the first 2 I'd say TYD is just a little better. Its harder improved and the story is deeper and darker but really you can't just get one and not the other. But if you don't want to pay too much for TYD get the first one

I'd agree. TTYD is harder and improved upon PM is almost everyway. But it just doesn't have the thing. The thing that PM has that hooks you, everytime you beat it.

Currently replaying PM and I'm as hooked as I was the first time I done it.

Paper Mario is the best of the three in my opinion, hands down.

I started off my Paper Mario RPGs playing TTYD first, then Paper Mario on VC and finally Super Paper Mario.

Whilst I agree that TTYD is harder than the original Paper Mario it had zero personality - sure it looked ok, but could put you to sleep after the first chapter. I think part of the problem was the lack of attactment I felt for most of the secondary/tertiary characters, the other part was the plot was a bit weak and the early quests a little flimsy which wasn't particularly motivation to complete the game.

Super Paper Mario was definately a step in the right direction, but for me wasn't quite enough. I think Nintendo tried to be too clever with its latest iteration - the game just seems to get too bogged down in references and narrative which interrupt your progress far too often and generally ruin the flow of play. Sure Paper Mario had dialogue but it was short, sweet and to the point when it mattered.

Paper Mario to me is the most entertaining of the three outright. At the end of the day though - I guess it's what each individual gets out of the game. You might like more of a challenge - in which case I'd recommend TTDY otherwise go for one of the other two.

Thumbs up

//

thanks for all the suggestions - looking at the replies and poll,
Paper Mario 64 seemed to stand out as the best choice (or introduction
at least)... so that's what I ended up downloading.

I might get TTYD if I see a copy with a decent price... maybe after xmas?

Thanks again,

-m.

You won't regret getting it, it's a great game that didn't get the recognition it should have when it was originally released.

Again, Paper Mario on N64 is the way to go. TTYD wasn't bad, but the N64 version is something special.

The same thing happened to me. It was a good idea, and the flipping from 2D to 3D was clever and the game had some very good moments, but it just went on too long. Turning an RPG into a platformer didn't work.

I like the original Paper Mario a bit more, but TTYD is a great sequel, and I really loved it.

Yup.

I was beating TTYD when I got PM and I went onto PM to test it (N64 cart from e-Bay) and didn't want to stop playing it. Once I beat it, I moved onto TTYD because I wanted more of the same (40 hours of it wasn't enough ) and I just couldn't get back into it.

I'd never been hooked on it, but I thought playing PM would help me get hooked (I find it very hard to enjoy games that are sequels to something I've never played, if I know it's a sequel. Becausae I never knew ALTTP was the third one for years). And it done exactly the opposite. It stopped me from playing it.

I think I was just about to go and meet the Yoshi's when I stopped.
