Default VC-forums monthly gaming club!

Welcome to the VC-Forums Monthly gaming club. The club operates as follows

Once a month participants in the club nominate a VC or Wiiware game that everyone in the club agrees to download (or otherwise find the means to play). The ideas behind it is threefold.

1. There are many games out there that people might actually love but are unwilling to take a risk on (I've discovered this myself after being gifted Milon's Doki Doki Adventure and picking up Paradroid due to SKTTR and others going on about its greatness). The idea in such a club is that it would introduce people to new games that they might otherwise pass over.

2. It might also get people to rediscover a game that they initially "meh'd" over after a few minutes play (again I've found this to be the case with numerous titles once I gave them a second chance).

3. It helps keep the VC-forums community alive and fosters a greater sense of community as people help each other out and get through the games.

List of people participating so far can be found below:

Sounds pretty cool, I dunno if I'll go out and buy the game every month, but it sounds like it'd be quite enjoyable if a fair amount of people got on board.

Obviously there wouldn't be any rule forcing people too if they were strapped for cash but the idea is we wouldn't avoid downloading the game just because we wern't sure if we'd like it. That defeats the object, which is to encourage new experiences.
Sometimes you just need a good enough incentive to give something a try.
The good thing with the VC is that most of the games are pretty cheap anyway unlike some of these clubs I've seen on other forums where they do it with a disk based game.

So it's like a book club....but with games? Sounds pretty cool. I might join in, but with school starting in September I may not have time to play anything.

I'd be in for this. Not like I don't have enough gaming to do already... but this could be a good way to clear out the VC games I already have, if they happen to be chosen.

I pretty much like the idea for this. Especially since I have some VC and WiiWare titles that I'm currently not playing [Due to me trying to finish out my older backlog first.], so this is a great incentive for me to start playing them when the time comes.

I'm not in, since I'm pretty picky on what games I download, however I feel this could be very informative to those who choose to sit out of the "club". I mean, there's plenty of games I've never put much thought into trying, but if that game is chosen, and there's a big consensus that it's awesome, it might prod me into trying it for myself.

First I suppose we give people time to register their interest, say till the next friday. In the meantime I'll keep a list on the first post. If we can get about 15 people interested for the first round it should be sufficient fun. usually these things grow as people see how it works.
After Friday voting can start to determine the first game and we officially start playing it 1st of September.

After that I would suggest we take turns alphabetically to recommend a new game each month or just keep the voting thing going.

I think taking up EvilDead97's idea we can all rate the game at the end of the month to produce an average score out of ten and buildup a record of our playlist.

I can see one problem in that people might not want to re-buy a game they own in its original format. I would propose that if anyone owns such a version of the chosen game then they just play that version.

Also, we'll have to make sure that the game we choose is available to people in all regions.

Tides, like I say there's no pressure if you feel you want to drop in and out as work or money demands. As long as when you are in you agree to play the game that's chosen. It'll defeat the object if someone says they're playing then refuses to take part because they don't want to play the game that's picked.

Great idea really, my Wii's currently at my uncles house since he actually play it
I would totally join in if my Wii was at home though, meanwhile it probably will be a good read once a month about the games you play.

Edit: Oh yeah, don't follow the links of the spam, Russian porn site if I'm not entirely wrong.

I think we should include WiiWare right out of the gate as well. It just gives us more options.

Looking forward to the nomination/voting process!

I'm happy to include Wiiware too (now that we have a good storage solution these days). My only thought was that it might put some of our younger members off as its prices can get a bit high.
Should we set a cap on the maximum points value or not bother?

Like I say, I'm not bothered as I don't consider any downloadable game to be expensive, but I know some people feel differently.

We could simply have a discussion about price during the nomination/vote process. If a game gets nominated that some people think is too expensive, then we can factor that into the final decision (i.e. put the kibosh on it, etc.).

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. I am definitely game for that because my issue too is not only financial, but also my preferences. Since I'm not too keen on certain genres, like Shooters and Sports. But everything else I don't mind joining in on, especially since I think I can deal with spending around 500 to 600 Nintendo Points a month.

I am excited to know what would be our pick for September.

I would hazard a guess that sports games won't be selected that often but there are a fair few fans of shooters around here so I wouldn't be so sure about them. Personally I don't play many shooters either but I've found they can be strangely compelling when competing against others (my Uridium pair-off with SKTTR for example) and I'm prepared to try anything once. The thing is how are you going to declare yourself in or out before you know what the selection is?
Shouldn't people only cast a vote if they are prepared for the consequences, otherwise what's to stop everyone dropping out when their favourite isn't picked? Like I say the point is to try and experience what you might otherwise pass over.

Exactly, but why don't we bypass the voting and have each member make a decision when it's their turn? So first, as Betagam came up with the idea, he picks the first game, then everyone who takes part in that game is eligible to be selected to pick the next game (which can be random, the outgoing selector picks a number out of a hat or something equally fair).

That sounds like a pretty interesting idea as long as no one is mean about it and picks a terrible game just to be funny.

I'm cool with that, unless like JoYo mentioned people are meaners, which is unlikely enough anyways.

I'm so suggesting Spelunker, seems like a kickass game!

But as mentioned, everyone taking turns to recommend a game is a good idea, unless people choose those games that everyone is almost certain to have or at least know is a great game (Super Metroid and Super Mario World as examples). Part of the whole idea seems to be that people should play games that they otherwise might wouldn't.

Oh boy!

I much prefer the idea of allowing members to take turns and choose their own game. I doubt any of us is mean enough to suggest terrible games.

I do admit my last comment was a bit selfish on my behalf, so I'll approach this with an open-mind. Who knows what'll happen? Like what Joxe said, maybe I'll find a gem in these selection of games that I usually would turn away. So I'm excited to see what Betagam7 would choose as our game for September.

This sounds like a lot of fun. I would definitely be interested in participating. We are a little strapped for cash so I may not be able to buy all of the selections, but I'll keep up as best as I can!

I totally am. This sounds like the perfect set-up to explore the "so bad it's good" genre.

Maybe some of us jerks can form our own subgroup, or have April to ourselves...

I agree with you so much on this! We should totally have April as our month of "so bad, it's good" genres of games.

That's a good point, heheh. Given the way Nintendo treats the VC, I actually wouldn't be surprised if our 20 or so sales for some random crappy game actually made it into one of the Shop Channel's charts...

I'm in, I think. I haven't had wii points for quite a while, though, and I'm getting a PS3 towards the end of the month.

Just a note, though: I usually HATE puzzle games except for bomberman and eventual breakout-style games. (Paradroid looks extremely BORING, for example.

This i like and expand on the idea, all who is in on this idle on the picked game to rackup played time.

Well I did say 15 people had to express interest before we could start and now it would we have that many (although some still need to make up their mind)
We now have in alphabetical order:

Betagam7
digiki (possibly)
Earl Wiggles
enigmaopeia (possibly)
Jogurt the Yogurt
Kiwi the Tortoise
Lord Bowser (eventually)
Mama Luigi (possibly)
PdRydia
Sharecrow
Sponge
The Shoemaker
Trapster (possibly)
Tull
Tides of Chaos (possibly)

If everyone's happy for me to start then I can make the first pick and we can start 1st of Sept when hopefully we'll have added a few more to the ranks.
I actually feel quite under pressure . I havn't had the ability to download anything for 2 months after having a wired connection and no router so I'm quite eager to download something new, although I'm also tempted to pick something from my backloggery to challenge myself to clear/appreciate it.

Don't worry though, I can guarantee I won't be picking Cybernoid from my backlog or downloading Urban Champion
