anyone else not want the arcade version at all?

usually, the arcade would be far superior, but for contra i would want the NES version.

or the import version, gryzor, would be amazing. i dont see enough interest for that to ever happen. but the extra background motions and cutscenes would be amazing.

I played both, and personally I prefer the NES version. The graphics are simpler so it's easier to see the bullets, and the levels are easier to memorize.

Home conversions can sometimes be preferable to play in these cases as they have less of a coin guzzling mechanic in mind.

However I see no reason why the game shouldn't be released in multiple formats. I'd prefer arcade Gradius first though.

I would like to see both versions of Contra actually. Although I would rather play the NES version though. Then the arcade version.

The NES version? Who wants that? I'd rather have the slightly superior Famicom game. Oh, and the MUCH superior Famicom version of Castlevania III.

what would be even cooler would be if they translate the cutscenes. and that map is badass.

I'm surprised we haven't gotten the NES version yet too guys. We've already got Super C and Contra III. I wonder what's taking them so long.

isn't Contra Rebirth better than the original NES one? or do you all want it for nostalgic purposes?

!!??!?!!??!!!!

no, no way! rebirth is spectacular, but the original will always be the best.

plus rebirth plays more like contra 3, like a super nintendo game. which is great, but its not the NES game at all.

one of the first disappointments with the VC, for me.... back when i first started noticing how many games that are NOT on it....

Whether it's better or not doesn't matter at all. Contra is its own game, and therefore deserves to be put up on the VC, regardless of there being "better" Contra games on the service. If you can't comprehend that, then you might want to change your views on what gaming is really about.

I could think of dozens of games that were remade into much better versions. Super Mario Bros -> Allstars, Final Fantasy -> Dawn of Souls, as well as many remakes from retro consoles to Gameboy Advance and DS. I LOVE remakes. They take great games and make them better, but there's nothing like playing the original.

I guess it depends on how you define "better", but I haven't come across that many remakes that truly improve on the game its based on. A lot just improve the graphics and/or make it easier, and some add a bunch of extranious content that doesn't really do much other than giving you more to do, rather than actually improving the core gameplay. I still like remakes, but there are only a handful of that I liked more than the original.

I could go on with this, but it's not topic, so I'll stop. The point here is that Contra ReBirth is not a remake by any means. It's a completely original game. Personally, I enjoyed the original game more, since the levels were easier to memorize and the bosses weren't as difficult. In fact, I liked everything in Contra 1 more than Contra ReBirth. Sure, it's more punishing, since it's incredibly difficult to clear a level with the peashooter, but if you can keep your power-ups and avoid getting hit, one life will go a long way. It just makes it a more satisfying game in my opinion.

All of those remakes did was improve the graphics...They didn't make the games better gameplay wise (Dawn Of Souls added an extra dungeon or two...that doesn't count).

Yeah, I definetely agree. I like games that are like psuedo remakes, where they were intended to be straight remakes, but they added/changed the game a lot to the fact where it could legitamately be called a remake, not a port with better graphics (like Metroid Zero Mission or Bionic Commando Rearmed).

Dawn of Souls also added an MP guage, added extra story scenes, improved the menues, and also fixed some glitches that were present in the original NES game. I'd actually consider that a genuine improvement, eventhough I still greatly prefer the NES version.

You're right about All-Stars, though. That game didn't change anything for the better except maybe the graphics, and personally, I didn't even like that.

Funny, I was even going to mention those as examples of good remakes, along with Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy 2, and...I forgot the last one. All are really good games that really managed to improve the gameplay and story in the right areas so they were more fun.

Good point. All of those things were new features from the NES game. However, seing as Dawn Of Souls is a port of a remake of a port of the original, it didn't add much (first was the NES game, then the PS1 remake, then the Wonderswan port, then the GBA port).

Dragon Warrior...You mean the GBC one? Which port of FF2 are you talking about? Haven't played either of those games myself.

Regardless, Dawn of Souls still carries over all of the improvements from the previous versions, so it's still better than the NES original. Plus, it was the Dawn of Souls version that added the MP system, as well as added several other tweaks and stuff. So yeah, the GBA version is still an improvement.

Dragon Warrior on the GBC and FF2 on the GBA and PSP. Sorry, I was in a hurry. That's why I didn't list them before.

As a side note, Dragon Warrior on the NES was THE most tedious, frustrating, and unrewarding RPG I have ever played, and I never want to play another game like it ever again. It's just one of those games that can break your spirit, and I commend anyone who can tolerate it. The Gameboy Color version fixed everything that was wrong with the NES version, and it's actually very enjoyable.

Well, yeah, but the Dawn Of Souls port in itself added little to justify it being a good remake. It was a port of another remake with some added content. It would be like if Capcom ported Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix to the PSP and added a new mode. Noone would consider that a remake, they would consider it a port of a PSN game.

Hey, the Japanese version of Dragon Warrior was worse.
