Anybody play it?
UT2K4 has pretty much been the love of my life since it came out. No matter how many games I play I always go back to this one for at least an hour a day. If you are interested in playing this or already do and want to have a little fun my Xfire name is docholiday. I'm going to start playing heavily in preparation for UT3 so if anybody would like to practice with me I can say without ego that I'm a pretty decent player.

They may be fun for a while, but first-person-shooters tend to bore me rather quickly. Talk about repetitiveness. There's only so many creatures/players I can kill, with an assortment of rather similar weapons, before I lose interest. I honestly can't quite understand how some can spend tons upon tons of hours on them.

In theory that may sound all good, but many mods are never finished, and most of them are just the same thing done slightly differently. Different environments, characters, weapons, yet very similar experience.
Yes, I've tried some that attempted to mix things up in the past, but I can't say those grabbed me either. In the end, it's still just shooting people, over and over again.

It all depends on what youre looking to do within the game. You can be a casual player who likes to just mindlessly shoot stuff and enjoy the game on a basic level. Which I imagine would get tiresome pretty quickly. But you can also join the community and start to play on a competitive level. Unreal isn't your run of the mill shooter. Its sure as hell not anything like a Halo. There is a level of growth that can be achieved over time that is one of the most satisfying accomplishments of my gaming life. Its through this growth of always challenging myself to get better that keeps me coming back. The gameplay involved has one of the deepest combat systems in any fps. This includes the simple yet effective movement system and one of the best weapon balances in any game i've ever played. Once you start to understand these better and find the drive to want to play on a competitive level do the doors really open wide. There are so many aspects that can always be improved upon youre own game no matter how long you have been playing. Unreal is a game of skill and mind play. Always thinking of what your opponent will do next as well as knowing what your next move is. Its almost like a sport to me. It really does take a certain amount of skill to be able to play with most of the players nowadays. And that fact alone gives me satisfaction. I worked fairly hard sharpening my skills over the years and its been one of my most rewarding gaming experiences. So it can be about mindless shooting or if you choose to embrace the challenge it can be so much more. Simply playing in Pubs is never going to show you this. The competitive level is displayed through clan activity. On this level it is necessary that the entire team works together and formulate different strategies based on your opponents, your own teams strentgh and weaknesses, and the current situation, and this all changes from map to map. Which, by the way, some of the user content in Unreal is phenomonal. The community is really one of the best parts. Since it is such a small community these days, most of the time it is only the people who really care about the game that play it. For instance there was a guy in my old clan who went on to developing one of the most popular mods for Unreal at the moment. So there are no annoying 10 year olds that are taking a break from Halo and Counter-Strike and talking **** in our servers. Its a place where pretty much everyone knows everyone and its a joy to log on and play a few matches a night with them. There is so much more to this game than meets the eye, you just have to know how and where to look for it.

Different strokes for different people, I suppose. *shrugs*
I've never bothered with clans in any game since the majority seem like cliques anyways, and the (high-school-like) drama involved with some of those is beyond ridiculous.

Very true in most games they can be. However, as I said before Unreal is a small community at the moment and you will very rarely find a clan that acts like that.
