Ultimate Shooter?

So the short and simple is I missed out on shooters basically as a whole, so where do I start?

I am going to download a game when I get home from work and I am currently debating between Soldier Blade and the newly released Galaga '90. Any recommendations?

Note: Any other suggestions are definitely welcome.

Either game would be a good start. Soldier Blade is a more modern shoot-em-up and my favourite of the two. It is more fast and furious.

Galaga '90 is a throwback to Galaga (1981) which is very similar to Space Invaders. It's a great game and streets ahead of Space Invaders which is basic by comparison. It feels quite unique however out of all the shmups on the VC so is most welcome.

I guess I'm just asking which would be the better choice to dive into the genre. R-Type could also be a major choice. Currently I'm leaning towards Soldier Blade. I'm sure I'll be getting almost all of them eventually, I'm just trying to figure out which to get today in roughly five hours.

I think that Soldier Blade is a better start. R-Type requires lots and lots of training and maybe some previous experience from the genre.

Soldier Blade is far easier to complete the first levels on so you can start out with that one. And welcome to the Shmup world ^_^

I'm new here and new to shmups so hopefully you'll be seeing a lot more of me. I can't wait to get home from work today.

Don't forget Air Zonk either which is a brilliant game. It's a well-designed shooter which masks its difficulty under a layer of cutesy graphics; though I know it's not the best shooter on the VC, it's my favourite, and would make a great introduction to the art of dodging bullets and chewing gum.

Ok, me too I was looking (or waiting) for a shooter.
Since I prefer horzies against verts, I think I'll follow your advise iNma and I'm getting Air Zonk in the next days.

Thanks, I already checked some videos and thought it would be the right title...it's 9 years I can't play anything but Einhander, I want to find something else..

Yea my download got pushed back a day since I was only home during the obligatory store update. Figures I decide to download something for the first time in months and the store is down.

No is it good? I actually ended up just getting drunk tonight instead of downloading as planned (it's my 21st this friday) but I will definitely be on the download tomorrow.
