Default Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

This is the one game I really want on VC now, even more than Mario RPG, Majoras Mask and Kirby's DL 3. This was my second favorite SNES game, next to Super Metroid. I just loved every moment of it, the game was fun on so many levels. Despite Mario World having more branching passages, I just thought World 2 was such a fresh experience.

It really was unique. Everything was so original. Even owning the GBA remake, I'd gladly dish out 8 bucks for the boosted sound quality and for Touch Fuzzy Get Dizzy.

Why they put Yoshis Story first still puzzles me. If anything, that'd turn gamers OFF Yoshi. Though I still have yet to play it and confirm it for myself.

Yoshi's Island uses the SuperFX 2 chip which is very difficult to emulate. Even the first SuperFX chip has yet to have a game released for it. Add in that plus the fact that Nintendo has a huge library of good games to still give us (Super Mario RPG, Majora's Mask, Earthbound) and the usual problems with NoA and NoE, and you have Nintendo not wanting to devote the time getting the 2 games that use either SuperFX chip*

*Yes, there are more than 2 games that use the SuperFX chips, but Star Fox and Yoshi's Island are the only major titles that used them, the rest are either tech-demo style games or games that licensing would be a major pain (such as Doom)

Why would the chip be so difficult to emulate?

Also, Yoshis Island is a major title from Nintendo, it cant just be ignored. Same for Star Fox, to a lesser extent.

I've got in on the GBA, but I haven't got into it yet. The last time I played it was waaay back when it was very first released on the SNES, and I don't remember a single thing about it. I'll probably trek through the GBA one sometime though.

Personally, this is one of the last games I want on VC. Not that it's bad or anything, but I've played it enough. Just like Super Mario world, I've played it enough that I couldn't care less that it's not in my VC collection. That's what happens when Nintendo ports them to the GBA.

I'd absolutely love to see the SNES version of Yoshi's Island released on VC as the GBA version didn't do it justice, particularly with that tiny screen.

I honestly consider it to be one, if not the most perfect platform game ever created. The artwork in the game still looks great, the level design is fantastic, the variety of enemies is fantastic. It's also one of the very, very few games that have ever made me laugh out loud. I dare anyone to get through "Touch Fuzzy: Get Dizzy" for the first time without bursting into laughter, or the sight of Yoshi morphing into a helicopter!

With regards to the difficulty of emulating the Super FX chips, it wouldn't be as difficult a task for Nintendo's programmers as it would be for someone writing an unofficial SNES emulator as Nintendo have got the technical manual off the blokes who created it and don't have to rely on trying to back-engineer it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Yoshi's Island wasn't one of the big Christmas releases on the VC, along with Super Mario Kart it is conspicuous in it's absence.

For a long time I have been playing Yoshi games like Yoshi's Island DS, Yoshi Story and other game like that, but then I played the Yoshi's Island remake on the GBA, and it blew my socks off! I love the boss levels, Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy is downright funny, and it just flows so much better then any other Yoshi game I have played! I also loved the Super FX effects

Yeah, this has been my #1 most wanted game on VC for a long time. This was probably my favorite platform game of the 16 bit generation (unless you consider Super Metroid a platform game).

I'm not having a go at you personally, but surely if a Yoshi's Island ROM can work with ZSnes then Nintendo themselves would have no problem running it on VC?

You'd think, right? And yet so far Nintendo has avoided VC releases of games that originally featured any add-on hardware. If it used the Super FX chip, or (in N64's case) the ram expansion pak, we've yet to see it on virtual console.

Nintendo will want to use their own proprietary emulation software. No doubt they have it in the pipes, but for whatever reason they haven't put it out there yet.

However, there are two games (Exite Bike & Wrecking Crew) that used a proprietary add-on for the Famicom that never saw the light of day in the US. The US ROMs of those two games are virtually identical to the Famicom versions, but they freeze when you try to save or load, because the add-on hardware is non-existant for the US Nintendo, and also, I have never seen it emulated correctly in any emulator. They also emulated the Famicom Disk System as well. In fact, the GBA version of lost levels even has Mario & Luigi running around on the FDS demo before the game starts, aka before the disk is inserted (it is kind of an easter egg, by holding down A+B when you boot the game).

So don't say that Nintendo can't emulate add-on hardware. If they did it for the Nintendo/Famicom, they can do it again for the SNES and N64.

EDIT: Oh, and the TurboCD addon completely slipped my mind while posting, LOL!

Oh, I would never say that Nintendo can't emulate add-on hardware for the VC. I'm just saying the fact that they haven't done it yet for certain formats is kind of conspicuous. If you make a list of the top-tier SNES games - not necessarily the best, but the greatest hits, the ones with huge name recognition, that are part of longstanding Nintendo franchises, that are guaranteed to sell on the VC - you start to notice that we've already gotten most of them, unless they use the SFX chip. No Starfox, no Super Mario World 2. There's got to be a reason for that.

My guess is that it could be done, and it probably will eventually, but it's extra work that just happens to be super-low on their list of priorities.

I get what you're saying but I just think Nintendo is holding back on the SNES releases for some reason. If you look at it, the SNES is clearly the most neglected of the consoles that launched with the VC. Yoshi's Island and Star Fox are franchise titles sure, but they are also the last in their respective franchises that Nintendo can release on the VC, which IMO is the more likely reason Nintendo is not releasing them. Not to mention that in the case of Star Fox, Star Fox 64 officially replaced the original as the first canon entry in the series, so who knows if Nintendo will release a game that is no longer considered part of the storyline.
