Default Super Mario Kart

I'm pretty sure this is an Snes game. I don't know if I'll download this game is it worth it? But I have a question is this game the same as super mario kart for the gba?

No Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart Super Circuit are different games.

I'm interested in this game, as it's the only released Marik Kart game I haven't played and the one that started it all. Hopefully it comes out soon!

i played it recently through means of questionable legality, and i have to say, its really showing its age graphically. what i remember of it when i was younger doesnt compare to what i played recently.

there are games that have held up very nicely like Super Metroid, or the Sonics, Super Mario World, ect.

sadly, Mario Kart wasnt one of them.

No, but all the SNES Tracks can be found in the GBA Version.

Mario Kart on GBA is more similar to Mario Kart 64, I think.

Also, I'm not going to bother with any MK VC titles as Mario Kart Wii comes out next spring!

Super Mario Kart (SNES) and Mario Kart Super Circuit (GBA) are very similiar in graphic style / track design.

Mario Kart 64 (N64), Mario Kart Double Dash (GC) and Mario Kart DS are real 3D.

Fans of Super Mario Kart were disappointed when the second game Mario Kart 64 came out in 1997, don't know why, maybe because SMK was a hardcore racing game and MK64 was just easy. Anyway, MK64 did so much better, with 4 players and real 3D tracks.

Today new age gamers seem to love MK64 more than SMK.
Anyway, SMK got much love at the time, and it's still one of the best racing games on the SNES.

I still prefer SMK to MK64 and MK: DD. MK: DS is great though. I'll pick SMK up when it hits the VC.

All the Mario Karts are worth getting, but yes, I was one of those guys who loved the SNES one to bits, played it to death with anyone willing to step near the console, and was strangely horrified by the 64 version.

The tracks are long and empty (apart from Moo Moo Farm and the Special Cup tracks, none are all that memorable), the karts are slower, I finished the single player in 3 days (without mastering any of the shortcuts), 4-player mode was strangely lifeless without music and the Blue Shell is just cheap.

Sorry to say, but I always thought Diddy Kong Racing was better than MK64, even though the multiplayer arenas aren't up to much.

However, I still downloaded MK64 and enjoyed playing through again, even though it did reinforce all my old beliefs. It's fun, but the weakest of the Mario Karts. However, ask me again once Super Mario Kart is downloadable - my memory may be ever so slightly rose-tinted.

I played Super Mario Kart a couple of moths ago, to me it has been one of my favorite games of all time.

To my mind there's little to compete with the thrill of bombing around the 4th multiplayer battle level (the one with the narrow "corridors"), cruising through a dozen green shells bouncing back and forth wildly, on your last balloon, to spin round the corner and pop a red shell in the other players back.

To anyone who complains that the flat graphics are poor - that just adds to the manic fun - there's nowhere to hide when the "walls" are just lines on the floor.

The only thing missing out is the 2-player limit.

I like mk64, but after a while its get boring imo. Not enough tracks. I just picked up smk at a garage sale and wasnt too impressed. I didnt think the gameplay was fun at all. I know mkD is way newer, but its so much more fun than mk64 single player, but i think the multi player is what made mk64 so fun to begin with.

Maybe Nintendo will release it just before Mario Kart Wii is released (when the hype is building up) much like Super Metroid with Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Bros 3 with Super Mario Galaxy.

I'm looking forward to downloading Super Mario Kart, it's not as slick as Mario Kart DS but considering it's around fifteen years old it holds up really well.
A lot of people have predicted it'll be released in the build-up to Mario Kart Wii and I have to agree with them.

I have to agree with Gaga64 that Diddy Kong Racing was a much more enjoyable 64 "kart" type game. The single player depth was just unmatched. I'd love to see Diddy Kong Racing make a VC appearance but that's for another post... I definitely prefer SMK over MK64 when it comes to the Cup Racing, but racing with 3 other pals on 64 is a riot, especially with a few alcoholic beverages involved

are you sure you weren't just playing in 50cc mode? 150cc or extra was def faster than MK iirc. Maybe you just had such an undying love for the original that anything else couldn't even hold up in comparison. I was like 10 years old when MK64 came out and along with goldeneye, thats all my friends and I played. If I pick up MK DS or MK DD it just isn't the same nowadays. Even now in 1st year university everyone on my floor loves MK64 just because we're all the same age and most of us have memories of it from our childhood.

For me, I can't stand SMK. It looks wayyy too zoomed in and claustrophobic. Also theres no drifting. This is because I played SMK waaay after playing the newer ones.

Super Mario Kart is gold. Get over the blockiness of mode 7 and you're in for one of the most satisfying racers around

I want it on the VC, but it's a reason to keep playing my SNES, so I can wait

No, I played through the entire game, 150cc and Reverse cups and all. You should probably bear in mind that the European localisation runs slower for both the SNES and N64 incarnations (I think Nintendo sorted this out by the Gamecube one though).

I think everyone probably has a happy place in their hearts for the first Mario Kart they play, so yeah, there's probably a little bit of the undying love for the original that makes all the sequels inferior because "they're not as pure as the original". I remember hating the idea of stick-wobbling power slide speed boosts on the N64, but it's now part of the Mario Kart standard, I've grown to like it and can't imagine a new edition of the game without it.

The original still had drifting and power-slides, they just didn't include the stick-wobbling speed boost.

Actually, the UK (European) PAL version of SMK was actually faster than the Japanese version. This is one rare instance of where we actually came off better than the East with a game release

I'm not too sure about that, most NTSC games was 16.7% faster than any Pal game. The Pal version of the game only faster because it runs 16% fewer frames than the ntsc version.

More info on this can read here:-

Wink Super Mario Kart rocks

My brothers and I first picked it up when it first came out in the UK. We've played it ever since. It's true that the only downside is we can't play more than 2 players at a time, but it doesn't stop us from still cracking it out and playing all night on a 'winner stays on' policy.

I played the M64 once - was very lame in comparison. I've just got a Wii, and it's just not the same gameplay on mario kart wii- too many variables, all the weapons are too easy and there's too many of them. To me the Nintendo systems have excelled in their gameplay rather than graphics. Isn't that why they've gone down the wii road, rather than the graphicy options the other consoles went for?

The current world of gaming is lacking the beauty that comes from restriction of options. To get skilled within a small set of variables, but with just enough that it's not boring. That was SMK.

Great moments: Do you remember the time you realised there was a special cup - when it got revealed? And then how about when they revealed the 150cc...? When you learned to powerslide? When you first realised you could jump a red shell if taking it straight on? When you first did a sub-1min lap in time trial on mario circuit 1? Or how about when you were trailing the other player by 8 points and had to oust them on rainbow road as well as come 1st? I just can't see myself loving the newer versions of mariokart like that, coz there's just too much there and you lose the essence of the game...

I've still got it on the SNES but wouldn't hesitate to get it on the WiiVC when they finally release it!

I just hope it's true to the original

Yep, good times! I love SMK. I also remember the first time I cranked through Rainbow Road at top speed without falling off a single time. Horay!

best mario kart ever IMO !!
i loved it so much, especially battle mode with that friend back then
we enjoyed hitting each other ... INGAME
when 1 had ghost, the other jumped over the "?" blocks to let the one with ghost use it

and then the water battlecourse, we jumped into water until the other brought back the ?'s and then get the one in water, hoping for star or something

was real fun

i loved it almost as much as SoM, was my 2nd most played SNES game
*hopes it gets to VC*

I prefer Mario Kart on the N64 over this for some reason but this game is quite cool. Although for some reason i don't like it as much as the other Mario Kart games.

MK64 is on my 2nd place of mario kart series

i wanna re-live this great game on my wii (VC)
we'll see if it gets there, we now can just hope

i enjoyed multiplayer most of all, both 1 on 1 race and battle

Meh, I was never a fan of Mario Kart, and Super Mario Kart was probably the worst out of them, if only for the lackluster track designs.

The original was the greatest thing in the world at the time. So many hours wasted in multilplayer, all 4 battle courses were perfect.

However, I've not played it since graduating to more recent consoles, so I have no idea how it will hold up. Looking forward to a VC release so I can test it anew.

I've never been a big fan of MK64. Single player had zero challenge compared with the SNES game, and mulitplayer seemed a little lifeless (am I remembering wrongly, or was there no music when 4 players were battling?). Whenever the tracks pop up in MK DS/Wii they always feel big and empty and just... lacking life compared with the rest. Weakest of the series.

My personal ranking:
#1 - Super MK
2 - MK Wii
3 - MK Double Dash
4 - MK DS
5 - MK Super Circuit
6 - MK 64

my top 3 is weird (like myself) :
1. Super Mario Kart (snes)
2. & 3. Mario Kart 64 & Mario Kart Wii

- MK64 on nr2 when i wanna battle or just live in the past for some
- MK Wii on nr2 when i wanna race with bike or just have some variation, and play the old courses

In my opinion Super Mario Kart was definetly the best of the MK line of games. Next would have to be 64, then the Wii one. Honestly Double Dash was horrible, having two racers was definetly too gimmicky for me, and personally, handheld consoles and me don't get along, so I don't enjoy those MK's.

My favourite is MK64.
The PAL version was so buggy and crazy, we loved it.
Especially Bowsers Castle and DKs Jungle Parkway, they were so damn fast.

We made polygon crushes with 4 players on Koopa Beach.
(You make this bug appear if all four players get into the ocean at the same time). I think me and my friends are the only ones aware of this bug. That was fun. The stage transformed, there were black holes in the ground and twitching walls everywhere, so this was our favourite racing track. We always made this bug happen and once it occured we started the race.
Anyways... it was the first MK with four player support so that alone doubled the fun that Super MK provided.
In 1997 MK64 was the best multiplayer game ever. Ok, some months later it was topped by GoldenEye...

The other Mario Karts were good, too but SMK and MK64 were the funniest imo. Maybe that's because they were all fresh and new to us when we were young. Double Dash also made lots of fun, character switching was great and all but I prefer to jump.

And while I appreciate the more advanced versions on DS and Wii, they couldn't match the simple fun of the SNES and N64 versions.

I suppose I'm overfed with that series. I shouldn't buy every game because of it's greatness. I should buy it when I'm hungry for it.

Are they going to be putting this game up for the VC?

This is a HUUUUUUUUUUGE MUST BUY for me. I'd buy it THEE second it'd come back; I'd even rank it as the best of the Mario Kart series.

its not official said to get to VC (yet), but i doubt nintendo wouldn't do it
and 300th game could be possible, but if it dont get to the coming soon to VC list soon, then it has less chance to be 300th VC game
just as i said about SSB, i rather have it before the 300th release on VC
