Default Mode 7

Starwing for the SNES looks great but I don't know any other mode 7 games, can someone tell me more about mode 7 games?

Mode 7 does scaling and rotatating off the backgrounds(bg layer). You can see it all the time in Super Mario Kart. Contra III got it on the top down levels. You see it in R-Type III where the background spin and such...

BTW Star Fox uses Super FX and not Mode 7. And yea is a geat game

Insted of rehashing the info in wikipedia ill point at it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mode_7
"Classic Mode 7 games include the Super NES titles Super Castlevania IV, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy IV, F-Zero and Super Mario Kart."

Mode 7 was used in practically every SNES game. The best example I can think of is in Super Mario World. When you defeat one of the Koopa Kids and they stretch and spin backwards and whatever else they do is Mode 7 in action.

There is a part in Super Metroid where the level rotates back and forth a bit near the beggining of the game. I believe it was mode 7 at work. Cool stuff... Glad I bought a cartridge too, these games just keep gettign rarer

You look for SNES games with graphics like Starwing / Starfox?
First off, it's not Mode 7. It's Super FX chip powered 3D graphics.

Other SNES games with FX Chip:

Stunt Race FX - 3D Truck Racing by Nintendo
Dirt Trax FX - 3D Racing game by Acclaim
Doom - 3D First Person Shooter by id Soft
Vortex - 3D Action game by Argonaut
Winter Gold - 3D Olympic Winter Games by Nintendo/Funcom
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (although this is a 2D game, with 3D effects in some levels)

The best ways to see Mode7 in action:

The whole ground rotates around your vehicle in F-Zero, Super Mario Kart,
Pilotwings etc. That's Mode 7.
- ActRaiser (when you select a stage on the map, it zooms in)
- Secret of Mana (map)
- Terranigma (map)

Someone mentioned Super Mario World, Super Castlevania IV,
Super Probotector, Super Metroid and many other games.
Everything that zooms, and rotates. That's Mode 7.
It's a special function of the SNES graphic chip that makes 2D sprites and bitmaps more flexible.

Super Castlevania IV also has some cool Mode 7 effects in the background and stuff. F-Zero is probably the best looking and most fun Mode 7 game you'll find on the Virtual Console.

Super Ghouls n' Ghosts have some wicked rotating mode 7 effects on one of the later levels.

Super Tennis is quite a nice example of rotatation also when the court flips around.

Actraiser has a nice scaling function when you go into an action scene.

Mode 7 really blew my socks off as a kid when I first saw it. A real step forward. It is interesting that the Megadrive could do similar effects in games like Gunstar Heroes, but you didn't see it nearly as often.

As I recall, the Mega CD was capable of Mode 7 or at least a very close approximation of it; the bonus levels on Sonic CD were pretty much spot on, for example.

As for SNES games, as has been pointed out, Mode 7 was used a lot. There's a lot of it in Yoshi's Island (beautiful game), and pretty much every Square/Enix rpg used it on the map screens.

I'm looking into F-Zero at the moment, is it as hard as the other F-Zero games?

Yes, the original F-Zero is hard. It's the only F-Zero I've never beaten completely,
so for me it's more difficult than F-Zero X and GX.
