Default Starfox Assault

I've been toying with the idea of picking up a used copy. Is it really worth it, though?

Its not bad. Its certainly more Starfoxy then Adventures, but no way near the awesomeness of Lylat Wars/Starfox 64.

Its fun, but not the best SF.

Been meaning to get this as well. Always stumped by the less than favourable reviews at the time of its release, though I love Star Fox and I'd love to find out for myself.

I actually found Starfox Adventures to be a fun albeit short game, even if the Starfox license wasn't anything more than trivial. The end game also seemed a bit tacked on.

Interested in Starfox Assault? Some things about this game...

1. It is short. 10 Missions and the game is over. Yes, you can get Highscores, Medals (don't get your friends shot down) and find 5 hidden flags in each mission. If you're good enough you can get access to the old Namco shooter Xevious, which cost 500 Wii Points on the VC. But the main part of Starfox Assault is beaten in about 6-8 hours.

2. Every mission is another part of the Lylat System. You walk on foot through Corneria City blasting robots and such. Or even travel in Sauria, a hommage to Starfox Adventures. Then there's a few levels old school starfox like with rings, lazers, novabombs etc. And then you got the Landmaster tank. And you can even leave it and run up to an Arwing and jet into the air. There are more footwalk missions than Arwing missions though.

3. This is an action game unlike Starfox Adventures. Every level is blasting up all different kinds of robots and alien creatures. Fox got a good amount of weapons. Mines, Grenades, Missiles, Rocket Launcher, Machinegun, Blaster...

4. Every level has a huge boss. Or at least some classic dogfights in space... a battle with Starwolf Team around a space station that you can even enter.

5. The title/menu song is crap. Never heard such a cheap house-remix of the Starfox theme. In-Game music is a whole lot better. Many classic tunes orchestrated in new and better quality.

6. It's not the same old story. There is a new enemy, and characters seem to have evolved. You know, Peppy isn't in that team anymore, Krystal jumped in. At a few points you might wonder what's happened, and some chapters later you'll find out.

7. Multiplayer is great! The more you play the more weapons, characters, modes, arenas you open up. 4 player can fight in well designed battle arenas. theres a bunch of footwalk arenas, a bunch of arwing arenas, and a bunch where you can find vehicles and use them or set traps and hide as a little man. It's like the Lylat Wars multiplayer but enhanced in every way.

8. The controls are great, if you find your setup! There are many setup configuration choices, so you might try them out first to find what's the best for you.

9. Graphics are a step back from Starfox Adventures. Fur effects gone, polygon clipping come.

10. Overall, it's a nice little addition for Starfox fans who like to see the story continue, or want a big multiplayer shootout.

Assault is well worth the purchase if you'll be playing multiplayer a lot. Otherwise, it's just slowing you down.
