Welcome one and all to The Yogurt Cup, the Virtual Console Forums' first Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament.
Everyone who played in The shoemaker's first SSBB league is welcome to join this tournament (your standings in the league will factor into your seeding!), but the tournament is of course open to new players as well (I'm looking at you, Shoe, Spore, Shortay, Merlin, Entropy, and others). To register, all you have to do is post here with your SSBB Friend Code. A lot of them can easily be found elsewhere, but for the sake of ease of organization (and to make sure none of us is forgetting anybody), it's easy enough to repost them here. I'll update this first post as a list of registered participants. See the next post for rules. REGISTRATION and STANDINGS 1. Kenryoku_maxis (Maxis), 3866 7709 4529 2. Kevin (Kevin), 1418 6373 3564 3. RULES
Over time, I'd like this tournament to be a test of many different Brawl skills, so the rules will differ from tournament to tournament. But to keep things simple for the first tournament of the series, each round is going to be 1-on-1. The tournament will be a double-elimination tournament, seeded by a 1-on-1 round robin. If necessary, depending on the number of entrants, a single-elimination qualifying round will be used to screen low-seed participants. (This is an option—see below for a discussion point.) You are free to choose whatever character you want at any time, and you can change between characters between matches. Since you won't know which characters your opponents are going to choose, and since the stage is a relatively neutral one, this won't take away from the fairness of the tournament. STAGE 1: ROUND-ROBINS During this round, every registered participant will play every other registered participant once. The round-robins will be 1-on-1 matches with standardized rules. BOTH PLAYERS must set the same item rules for them to be effective during these matches. STAGE: Battlefield FORMAT: Time TIME: 6:00 ITEMS: only Smash Ball and Maxim Tomato, set to Rare Visible Score: OFF SCHEDULING: Round-robins can be scheduled at the discretion of the participants. Just before the tournament begins (when I know how many participants there will be) I will set a generous deadline for the last day round-robins must be completed. If I see someone is getting slack with their round-robins, I will step in and start scheduling matches for them. This means it's up to YOU to schedule your matches for the first round. If you have a certain day that you have hours free to brawl, feel free to schedule several of your matches for that period. SCORING: After each match, I am going to want to know what each player's +/- was. That means how many KOs, how many Falls, and how many SDs. If you're not confident in your ability to report that information to me accurately, then you should save a replay of the match. DO NOT send me the replay right away—I don't want to be swamped by a whole bunch of them. Send me a PM with the stats for the fight or else to tell me that you've finished, and I will ask for replays to be sent one at a time. This way I can confirm scoring myself if there are any troubles. (We may have to swap Wii console numbers to exchange replays. If so, I'll include them in the registration post above). STAGE 2: SEEDING and SINGLE-ELIMINATION QUALIFIERS After I have received all of the results of the round-robins, I will compile them and combine them with the standings from The shoemaker's league to seed participants into a double-elimination bracket. If there are an odd number of participants, making bracketing difficult, then we have a couple of options. We can discuss this before we begin. One way to proceed would be to have single-elimination qualifiers to make low-seed participants compete for the final spots in the tournament. This is the easiest way, and it's fair because it rewards the good players and makes the players with bad records have to compete harder to qualify. Another option would be to have the highest seed participants get byes into future rounds. The downside of this is that it means less playing for the better players. Let me know what you all think. STAGE 3: DOUBLE-ELIMINATION MAIN EVENT Once all of the seeding has been taken care of, we're free to start the main event! This is going to be a double-elimination 1-on-1 tournament, with the winner of each match staying in the upper SNES Bracket, and the loser dropping down into the NES Bracket. Losers in the NES Bracket are eliminated from the tournament. If you find yourself in the lower bracket, don't give up! You can still potentially fight your way back to a spot in the finals! STAGE: Final Destination FORMAT: Stock STOCK: 10 ITEMS: None Visible Score: OFF Remember, both players have to turn their items off! The relatively high stock count will make these matches quite competitive, and I expect we'll see some glorious comebacks. We will work out scheduling for this part of the tournament when we get there. STAGE 4: FINALS This is where I want some feedback and discussion to take place. There are two really good possibilities for a format for the finals. One is to continue the 1-on-1 format, with the two remaining participants fighting for the glory of first place. Another is with the final two participants from the SNES Bracket and the final two participants from the NES Bracket fighting in a set of 4-man free for all matches. The problem with the latter is obvious: LAG! But it could be fun. Let me know what you think.

Registration is open! Post your info in-thread or send me a PM and I'll sign you up and we'll get things rolling. I think I'll leave registration open until the beginning of next week, and then we'll start opening up the round-robins.

I would love to join (don't have many EU-ians to play with 'til it's out here), except for two issues:
1. I have exams starting next Wednesday (12th) until the 18th of June, meaning I'll be spending most of my time studying, apart from around 9pm GMT onwards. 2. When Shoe and I played a while ago the lag was pretty bad, same with flamin. Not unplayable, but pretty damn annoying, and it's not really fair on whoever I'm playing, seeing as it's me who's causing the lag. If I tested it online again with someone here the lag might not be so bad this time round, but maybe not... |

You probably should've waited until the game was released in Europe.
The Yogurt Cup. Name it after yourself?

dk_xcalibur, (DK-X) 4253-3162-1436
Sign me up! I'm cool with the rules. As far as the finals go, my vote is for the championship of the Great Yogurt Cup to be the two best players only. Also, I think it would be cool to send the replays from the finals to all players for entertainment purposes. |

I'm in.
Entropy (NtroP) 2406 5650 1875 I would also have to vote for the two best players competing 1-on-1 in the finals, although the 4-player free for all does sound interesting. Maybe it could be incorporated for fun some how? I think dk xcalibur's idea about sending everyone in the tourney a replay of the finals is very cool too.

For some reason when I first looked at this thread, the Mario Party 8 main menu theme song got stuck in my head =p.

I'll sign up. However, I feel like I can't really suggest anything, as a lot of the original rules and how the current Brawl League we have going is based on the format I created. And so I feel like me making suggestions for this Tournament would either be considered a conflict of interest or something I suggest might end up trying to change the format/rules. So I'm all hands off for this one and I'm just gonna play.
Unless a major discussion about a perticular set of rules comes up later in the thread and I feel like I should join in the conversation. Anyway, same code: 3866 7709 4529 I'll update with my Wii Code next time I turn on my Wii (playing Pokemon atm).

Remember, even though I have a lot of rules spelled out in detail, this is still just a light-hearted fun tournament, nothing too serious. So don't be intimidated. If you just want to have some social fun playing some fellow VCF brawlers in an organized way, then sign up!

No, I named it after a delicious treat. I'll update the registration information in the morning. Shoe, you joining or what? Shortay, I don't know about the lag problems, but I know you could use a five minute break here and there while you're studying for exams.
