Default So, I had this awesome idea...

Well, with the Virtual Console, Nintendo has been releasing a whole bunch of Arcade-to-NES/SNES games, as well as Arcade style games on both VC and on regular disks. I've come up with an idea because of this.

Design a Wooden Arcade Cabinet That would house the Wii. The monitor can be a TV of probably about 25" to keep with Arcade style traditions. Above the monitor, there would have to be a slot for the sensor bar, obviously. Where the Joysticks would be, I could mount 2 Hori Fighting Sticks, and there would be 2 slots for Wiimotes(The cables can run inside the cabinet so it doesn't look ugly for the controllers.) This would be perfect for Fighting games like Street Fighter II, or any Arcade games really, like Galaga and whatnot.

For more of an Arcade feel, you can have the Pinball games released on VC, like Devil's Crush and Alien's Crush.

And for more current games released on the Wii, you can have 2 Wii Zappers hanging off the sides of the cabinet. Ghost Squad or Resident Evil: UC, anyone?

Merely a concept I have, but I think it would be cool. The Wii can make a very cool Arcade experience, plus, High Scores are all recorded and stuff.

Actually, the cost wouldn't be completely terrible.

It we think about it objectively, I could find design templates for Arcade cabinets somewhere online. So, I would have to buy wood and paint for said wood. These aren't terribly expensive to buy.

Tools I already have access to, so I would design/cut the wood into what it needed to be. Now, after assembly, I would need to buy a 25" TV. Since mostly VC games are being focused on with this project, a Standard-def TV will do nicely. Plus, old-school arcade cabinets didn't have flatscreens. This will set me back about $400 to get a new TV, probably less though.

The only thing left is the Wii itself, which I already have, obviously. I wouldn't buy a separate one, that would be silly. The cabinet is really just for nostalgia effect, atmosphere, and fun. The only other components I would need are another Wii Zapper, and another Fighting Stick.

All-in-all, the whole thing costs under $600 if you already have a Wii, which isn't completely bad. You could buy pre-prepared cabinet kits for about $450, but you still need to provide your own controls and monitor, as well as whatever system or board you're using, so it costs less to make it yourself.

Ah, nice.

However, while the general idea may be the same, it's the specifics that differ. I just want something that'll give a different feel and atmosphere, a basic wooden shell. I may still do it if I ever get a TV and some money.

You should totally do that.

I want to get the Zapper and pretty much all of the current lightgun games, and the shaft, simply because I love arcade gaming. But I'm not too fond of Arcade Fighters. Arcade platformers, Shmups and Run 'n' Guns are my bag.

If I can get a used TV, actually, this would be an extremely cheap project.

For when I eventually want to make my MAME machine, though...yeah, that's the future though.

Also, I've looked up a great deal of other Wiicade machines, and most of them are pretty unimpressive. Most of them use the Gamecube ports and are pretty awkward concerning the Wiimote.

Since I'm designing mine completely with the Wii in mind, it'll be much cleaner I believe.

I approve your taste.
