Default Shoot 'Em Ups

I've never really been very interested in getting one on VC, but I just played Gradius on Mystical Ninja and now I want to.

Which is the best one available for VC at the moment? R-Type? R-Type III? One of the 600 point TG ones?

Help me, I'm only getting one and don't want to make the wrong move!

I'd say R-Type on the TG-16 myself. It's probably a bit easier to get into than some of the others for newcomers to the genre. Still it is 200 points more than normal.

I think Soldier Blade is the best shmup on the VC at present. It is faster paced than R-Type and vertical scrolling rather than horizontal.

Air Zonk on the TG16 is coming out this month, might be worth waiting for that.

Air Zonk I might get as well, as it looks a little different. But I also want one for tonight! I was also thinking I could get Actraiser instead, but I'll probably get that anyway in the next couple of weeks.

As a young un you owe it to yourself to check out R-Type. The TG16 version is almost arcade perfect. An excellent game, to think I had to put up with the flickery Master System version as a lad! Grrrrr

You really don't like sprite flicker, do you Dazza?

I'd personally go for either R-Type III or Soldier Blade. I'll let you decide, depending on whether you want a quick paced shooter (Soldier Blade) or a slower, more tactical one (R-Type III)

Having grown up with the master system it was the bane of my young life! Double Dragon was almost unplayable when there were more than 5 sprites on screen at one time!

Dazza I would hardly recommended something like r-type for newcomers it is hard and very slow paced so could easily put off newcomers I would personally recommended Blazing Lazers due to the easier difficulty.

Personally I find R-Type much easier. The gameplay is quite slow so you can easily spot things coming. The bosses has definite tactics too, it's not just a maze of bullets to weave around. I think it only really starts to get a bit tricky from level 4 (the one with the dots) onwards.

It is worth buying just to play level 3, the big mothership which fills up several screens.

What a game!

Funny thing is I am about to download Gradius III. IGN seems to think it is the best shooter on the VC (rated 8.5) followed by R-Type III (rated 8.3). No one has mentioned it yet here. I've never been a huge fan of the genre, but my list lacks a good arcade space shooter. Anyone care to talk me out of it?

Edit: After reading the VCR review, I learned Gradius III is two player alternating, not simultaneous. As I said, I'm not really a huge fan of the genre making two player mode a must for replay value. So, which is the best two player simultaneous shooter on the VC now?
