In my opinion Radiant Silvergun is the best shmup ever. 2nd place Ikaruga. And i think Thunderforce V should also named for the Saturn, a great Shmup too.

On PC-Engine my Fav is R-Type.

I know this is slightly off-topic, but if you guys like shmups you should really try some of the doujin releases on the PC, particularly the Tohou games.

Personally, my vote goes to Einhander, Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga and Gunbird 2 as the best shooters, and out of the two options above, I'll have to say I prefer the Saturn

A link would be very appreciated!

Please expand this conversation, I don't know so much about Saturn or PCEngine so I'll be glad to discover good shmups for the NEC machine.

OT:
After Einhander I couldn't get into ANY vert/horzie shooter. Even the old ones I once loved. Gyruss and Time Pilot are the only games that stand the challenge....
