Default What is your favourite Sonic on the MD/Gen?

So out of the 3 main Sonics (the spin-offs etc haven't been included) which is your favourite?

1. Sonic
2. Sonic 2
3. Sonic 3 & knuckles

Not counting 3. Sonic 3 & knuckles as 2 seperate games because initially they would have been one game but cartridge restraints.. etc

There are already several topics like this. Including "Favourite Sonic Game" and "What Sonic Game Should i buy" which arent to far down the topic list.

P.S The titles i used arent exactly the same as the topic titles.

Couldn't find any 'Favourite sonic game' threads, and 'similar threads' bit isn't picking it up either.
Only one similar I could/can find is 'Which sonic should I Download' thats not necessarily someones favourite and it doesn't include Sonic 3 & knuckles.
The main debate lies between Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, I was interested in seeing what peoples choices were.

So really only 1 thread like this (in this subforum anyway) which isn't several

fair enough but it didn't include a poll and like i said before I'm mostly interested in what people prefer, Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 & knuckles, only put sonic 1 in just incase some weirdo or someone living in a cave and hasnt discovered Sonic 2/3 & knuckles wants to chose it.

Same here. But if they had of added Sonic CD, I would have chose it instead. It's like they took the original and made it totally massive!

Ooh, Sonic CD was great. Probably my second favourite after Sonic 2. I wonder if we'll see it on VC? as far as I'm aware, the main reason it was on Mega CD on the first place was due to the special stage having Mode-7-esque graphics (which the Mega Drive couldn't do on its own); it doesn't make much use of the increased CD storage space.

I'm sure the fact that it has like 70 levels counting time zones also has something to do with it.

And the whole point was trying to find that machine that's hidden in the past in each zone. The game is a bear to complete 100% correctly. I still haven't done it!

Oh it's definitely bigger than the standard Megadrive cart, but does it use all of the storage space on the CD, thus putting it beyond the capacity of the VC? I'm not so sure of that; I suspect that, unlike other CD games, Sonic CD wouldn't be too big of a download.

You're obviously not counting the CD music.

If I remember correctly, they even had to cut the Special Stage track during development, possibly due to space restrictions.

Ah yes, I'd be forgetting that. Never mind then.

Although, out of casual interest, I wouldn't mind knowing how large Sonic CD actually is.

My PAL backup is 556MB.

But anyway, I'm guessing they'll be using some kind of compression for the CD audio (I hope it's not low quality MP3). The whole thing compressed is around 350MB, so that's the size I'd expect not counting the emu itself.

So quite a bit bigger than the current VC can reasonably handle then.

I've got it on Sonic Gems, so I'm not too worried about it. I just miss that suspend feature.

On the Genesis, definately Sonic 3 & Knuckles, but as far as old school Sonic games go, Sonic CD blows it completely out of the water! G-d I love that game!

I never did get past the Metal Sonic boss race and I hated the bouncy bouncy level before it (Wacky Workbench?) but it was good. I just felt I blasted through it without really exploring so I may rent it again.

On topic: Sonic 3 & Knuckles was immense but it was a shame you didn't get the chance to play all the levels in the original order. Both installments did suffer from some incredibly scrappy filler levels so I'm going for Sonic 2 as a more complete package and the best final boss music in the series.

I missed that! I've played them all and voted Sonic 1 because it's my favourite, although it was hard to choose.

Definitely no. 2. But the second half of 3 & Knuckles comes pretty close. Never liked sonic 3 by itself that much, it had mostly bland music and contradicting level design.

I don't know, because I've only played a couple stages of Sonic 2, but last weekend I picked up working copies of all three games so I may be able to judge with more objectivity eventually.

Sonic 1. For me, it´s the best game sonic ever.

In second place, Sonic 2.

I voted Sonic 2. Easily the best Sonic game IMO. I recently got to play Sonic 3, and honestly didn't find it to be that special. Sonic & Knuckles, however, is amazing! Very close second.

Oddly enough, Sonic 2 was my least favorite of the Genesis Sonics - Chemical Zone drove me thru the roof! There was this one spot where that, at first glance looked like someting you could run across, but you couldn't - you were supposed to stop and wait for a moving platform to come and take you across. Unfortunately, it was at the end of a rather long section, so I'm coming in full speed, and I don't have enough time to react. Took me a lot of tries before I finally got that down. Unfortunately, after that I then had to contend with a stupid moving block section while the water rises, and when it catches up with me(and it always does), Sonic moves so slow that I'll usually miss judge a jump and fall back down the pit. Once I finally made it past that, then I had another moving platform, and made several more trips into the prple abyss. And when I finall, FINALLY make it to the boss, I have to contend with sections of the floor that periodically flip over, and they don't even stop when you've killed the boss. I only managed to kill the boss once, after using up all of my lives and all of my continues. After I FINALLY kill the boss, I land on a part of the floor that flips over, and I died. I never played Sonic 2 again.

Thankfully, none of the other Sonic games really ever as cheap, or at least, they didn't pull out the cheap stuff until the later levels, and I was actually able to enjoy them.

Sonic & Knuckles on it's own. I didn't like the zones in sonic 3 as much. Lava reef is one of my favourites from the series and the first time I saw the Doomsday zone I was blown away.

Although I love Sonic 2 I have to go for S3&K since it provided the longest gameplay for people who could finish 3 in half an hour and the 9 different endings (I think there were 9) you get.

Also no-one can say that the Lava Reef, Doomsday and Sky Sanctuary Zones are bloody fantastic!

I'll tell you a secret on how to miss that part out .

You know the ramp that makes Sonic go up and down just before that section? Well if you jump at the peak of the first ramp (not the shallow one the deep one where there's two) you can jump high enough to get to the top of that water section, completely missing it! You must use the speed booster though or it won't work, running or rolling makes no difference but rolling is harder for obvious reasons. I wish I could show you what I mean but I can't find a good enough screenshot to prove it.

Go to that site, the part I'm on about is at the end of the site name at the bottom of the level map.

Hope it helped. I discovered it years ago out of nowhere.

There was another place where you could jump up to where those two rotating platforms were if you went on the top section but I only did it once and I have no idea where I pressed the jump button at.

I know how you feel, when I first started I did the exact same thing. It's pretty easy to dodge the flipping platforms but you just have to focus on them. Even I die on them quite frequently and that secret I do makes playing that particular level easier! :P

I've not tried Relavant Latrommi's method but the best advice for the underwater bit is to take it slowly. You have to be patient and time your jumps and wait for the platforms to move rather than trying to jump there (where possible).

For the boss, you don't even need to step on the platforms that flip over. Stay in the middle and bounce back to the middle each time you need to after you've hit Robotnik, then jump over them at the end. I agree with you that Sonic 2 has more than its fair share of frustrating levels but they're easy once you learn them.

If Miyamoto made a Sonic game, instead of rings, Sonic would be collecting speed.
