| Probably the most pointless VC release yet, unless your interesting in saving a small pittance on the 800 point, almost arcade perfect, TG16 version for an inferior port.

| I think it looks cute for some reason, seeing the little SMS pull off its own R Type port and having room for an extra secret level (Which I guess fans could go for). Maybe I ll pick up the cart when I get a SMS... |

Tne most pointless VC game award would have to go to most of the neo geo games.

| No that award is more suited to Dig Dug and SF II: The World Warrior. |

Er no, because some people may have nostalgia for those titles. The ONLY reason most of the Neo Geo games on VC are pointless is because there is a much superior compilation that offers an extended array of control methods, so they are in effect, the VC versions AND MORE. Well, getting back on topic, some people may actually want to try out every version of R-Type there is, because they're either a fan or want to see the historical relevance of said game.

| Great idea!! Pointless VC Games Top 3. 1. Last Ninja 3 - No one needs a broken game. As long as it's not fixed it deserves to be on the top spot. It's not only pointless, it's also laughing spitting ninjakicking shurikenthrowing in the customers face. 2. The 17 NES Games that are all available via €15 Animal Crossing for Gamecube. Some of those games are really not worth 500 points each (Donkey Kong Jr. Math, Soccer and Baseball) but for Punch-Out, Wario's Woods, Excitebike, Balloon Fight and Clu Clu Land alone you'll get more than your moneys worth. 3. The Neo Geo games that are available in full speed on those €15 compilations for the Wii. Why Dig Dug or Street Fighter II? Any other chances to play them on the Wii for less money and in better quality? Well, there might be a Namco classic compilation I've never seen. But if you pick Dig Dug, I'm confident there's some Pac-Man, Galaga and Xevious on there too?! Edit: As long as there is an additional exclusive stage you can't find in any other version, as with R-Type for the Master System, there's enough reason to make it available for the fans. Not sure why he said Dig Dug (although is it not available on a GC collection?) but SF2 I'd guess because many people feel a bit ripped off about buying it when the better Turbo and Super versions came out later.

| On the subject of those AC NES games, yes its cheaper, but the GC's controller's D Pad is annoying for those games. |

Anyway, there's a thread for this already ("VC Games We Can Live Without"). Not sure why this discussion is taking place in the R-Type thread.

| To try and get the discussion back on track, for those who say they will be buying it. What's your main reason for picking it up. Do you already own the TG16 version or are you just interested because of the price?

| I have (and have beaten) the TG16 version. I want this one as well mostly because of the secret level that only exists on this version. I'm also a little curious how differently it may play being a different version...if it's easier or harder in certain parts and etc. Plus R-type is a good game so it'll be a good opportunity to get to play through it again!!! |

| Because you can get the arcade version with a completion some ware. I think there is a GC version. As odd as this sounds I am still kind of annoyed it was picked for a import release, where a more original game could have been released instead of that. Street Fighter II TWW is pointless, since the turbo version is almost identical, except with more characters and better speed. On topic, I am slightly interested in this, especially for the extra level. But I will pass for now, as I am still to beat the TG:16 version. Besides this is inessential in my book anyway. |

| For me it's mostly because I'm a shooter nerd and will buy almost every single shooter in existence. BUt pretty much both of what you said. I already own R-Types on PSN and R-Type on TG16/VC as well as R-Type DX. But since I own a SMS and wanted some games for it who nows...I might just buy the actaul cartridge instead. It goes for around 15. |

No skin off their hairy backs though, since as Reggie pointed out, there's simply no market for used games anywhere. People are either getting their old games from the VC or they're playing the pristine brand-new copies they bought when they were kids.

| Sega certainly have been very quiet around the VC lately. Even Japan hasn’t had a Mega Drive/SMS release for almost a year now. |

SUPER HANG OUT ARCADE VERSION released in Japan just the other week isn't what I call very quiet on SEGA's part. It actually could mean SEGA's back from their summer vacation. Or maybe they want to concentrate on their Sonic 4 WiiWare game and don't want other SEGA games to take away sales? Dunno.

| Do you like my helmet? | Sega's been focusing very heavily on the iTunes store and Steam this summer, where they're making buckets of money. The iTunes store just had a big Sega sale (where I picked up Shining Force for $0.99), and they just launched a second wave of Genesis games on Steam (they already had some on there for $3.99 or $4.99 or so). Once Sonic 4 is closer to launch, expect to see some more buzz about that on PSN/WW/XBLA. Maybe we'll even get another sale this holiday season. |

Maybe they will release stuff on the VC in the nexy few month who knows. Shining Force for $0.99? How ridiculously cheap.

R-Type for the SMS apparently has ONE exclusive level (I think someone already mentioned this, but just in case). That's more reason to buy this port, even with the not as good presentation. Anyone who's played it- Is the exclusive level any good? Hardcore Gaming 101 - R-Type

| Yes, it is a really good level - though a short one. It, by itself, is worth the download cost in my opinion. But I love R-Type so my enthusiasm for a new level may be weighted as a result. I have yet to beat it because it is tough and has no checkpoint. The boss is tough as nails, too. I think it has the best music in the game though...even better than the level 6 music, which is my favorite track in the TG16 version of the game. |
