Default Sonic the Hedgehog- A quick VC question

Just a quick question, does the first Sonic the Hedgehog have the same oddly coloured borders as Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on VC?
If it does, I'll just use Mega Collection for it, but if it doesn't I might download it if we have an uneventful VC night..

I too have a general question.

How do I make the warp to the Chaos Emerald zones appear?
They seem to spawn randomly.

To answer the 3 year old question. No, Sonic 1 does not have blue borders

You need to finish the stage with 50 or more rings.

Ah, I thought it was something like that. Thanks.

Next questions.

In Sonic 1, is every Chaos Emerald = +1 continue?

In Sonic 2, are there any Chaos Emeralds at all? And on that matter, different endings?
How do you collect continues there?
At first I thought I got infinite but after 5 continues wasted in the Metropolis Zone it was a final Game Over and the title screen appeared.
And is there any difference in playing with Sonic&Tails or Sonic/Tales alone?

No, I think you have to get 50 rings in the special stage.

In Sonic 2 you have to have 50 rings and then pass a restart post. A spinning ring of stars will appear, jump into it to be warped into a tunnel where you have to collect a certain number of rings for each checkpoint whilst avoiding the bombs. There is a slightly different ending for Sonic 2 but the real bonus for collecting all the emeralds is the chance to be Super Sonic.

If you have Tails in Metropolis Zone you can use him to kill the boss by using a second controller to control him. He can't actually die so you can use him a fox shaped shield to get rid of the circling decoys that protect the main shell.

The border's are due to the bad PAL conversion and the fact it runs in 50hz. You're better off with the 60hz Mega Collection.

You'll also find that the first game also runs slower than the one on the MC due to it not being partially optimised like the second game was.

More details are in the thread linked to in my sig.

Get Mega Collection if you are a PAL user, it has got it all and more.

Thank you!! Honestly, I've had the game for well over a decade, and I honestly could not figure out how to get to a Chaos Emerald! Now I have a new reason to play it again!

It helps to know the location of the checkpoints as a lot of the time you will whizz past them before you get a chance to even see the ring of stars above the post! It also helps to play as Sonic or Tails alone as Tails jumping around whilst your trying to concentrate on when to jump in the tunnel can get very annoying. If you play as Sonic and Tails you will need to collect slightly more rings than if you were playing as a single character.

If you're really good at the special stages you can get ALL the emeralds by the end of Emerald Hill Zone. If you screw up on a bonus stage you will play it again until you do get it. Unlike the first game the bonus levels do not cycle.

Alterantively you can be a dirty rotten cheater and use the sound test cheat to get all seven emeralds.

I tried to beat Sonic 2 for the third time.
Like in my 2nd try, Game over at Death Egg Zone again.

This time defeated Metal Sonic but Dr. Robotnik came to kill me in a giant robot. Looks like this is the final stage, and he's just invincible which makes it all more unnerving. You can't even take your time to think of a strategy. You have to try everything at the cost of lives and Game Overs.

I honestly don't care about beating Sonic 2 soon until I have some level select or unlimited lives or a strategy to beat the damn bosses.
And collecting Chaos Emeralds? Never! The bonus game is horrible!

This game gives me a heartache. Hate it. It's full of cheap deaths, bugs, try&error and starting-from-scratch which isn't my idea of fun.

I hope Sonic 3 is better, but I need some time to forget Sonic 2's cheapness before I can pull myself into playing the next one.

I'm sorry you're not enjoying Sonic 2. The final boss is not invincible he just has a small area for attack that means you need to make sure your jumps are pinpoint precise.

From what I remember he is only vulnerable when he walks toward you (try and jump at him when his arm is swinging downwards) and for a very brief period after he lands from his targetted jump. To get a feel for his pattern don't even try and attack him, just jump and dodge.

The process is he flies up, run as far as you can. When the target stops run away. He shoots his two arms, after he launches the second arm run toward him and attack before he flies away. If he lands close to you if you're quick you can sneak in a crafty hit before he starts with the arms but if you're not confident stick to the attrition policy. It takes 12 hits to finish him.

As for level select cheats you can use the sound test (19 65 09 17) and then press A + Start (or its equivalent) on the title screen. All emeralds use 04 01 02 06 on the level select.

Dr Robotnik on Death Egg Zone is actually quite easy to beat once you figure out how to attack him. Like Yossarian says he not impossible to beat.

Try hitting him when he's just about to launch into the air, instead of just running back and jumping forward into him.

Also in case you don't know, there's also a sneaky tip on killing Metal Sonic quickly. Go to the spot where Metal Sonic is about to land and make sure you position yourself so you can spin backward. As soon as he lands charge your spin attack and you should get 5-6 hits. Then when he's about to turn into a ball quickly let go of the spin attack so you can keep away from him and hit him when the times are right. I would recommend practicing using the level select cheat first though.

I understand why this game is frustrating. I only managed to beat this game a week ago myself and progressing through this can be quite annoying without a save, which is why I kinda prefer Sonic 3.

Good luck.
