It got an 8 out of 10.

For RPG fans, this is an essential Virtual Console purchase.

It's flaws are minor? I seem to recall playing the GBA version and getting my ass handed to me, repeatedly, by the enemies directly outside the first village. My only chance to win those battles was to wait for an enemy to miss--repeatedly--so I had a chance to kill it.

Thats not a flaw, thats real life! I know I'd get my ass handed to me if I just up and decided to fight monsters outside my town.

Florida monsters must be a breed apart from Maryland monsters. I just put on my shirt and baseball cap and get crackin'.

For some reason I really want to play this game, despite my minor grudge against the series.

We get alot of retired warlocks moving in all the time, and you know how much they hate trespassers, so they conjure up some tough beasties to keep people away.

Oh yeah, I know all about that from my Kentucky days. "Hey you kids get off my lawn!" and all that, followed up with a fireball and goblin horde. Jeeze, I don't want your stupid lawn gnomes, old man!

Wuss. Just a grind a little bit. But I eventually got stuck in the game so I just killed monsters. I must be a bit over level 20 by now.

How can you grind when you get a game over after almost every encounter?!

I'm just happy now there's Phantasy Star 1, 2, 3 and 4 available on the VC. A complete series isn't it?

Yeah, if you don't count those later online things (I don't).

I count them as a different series altogether. They stray far from the orginal 4 games in terms of gameplay so I count them seperate also.

As for this game it was my favourite out of PS 1,2 & 3. I had them on the GBA Collection and couldnt get anywhere in 2 and didnt like the feel of 3 so I tried 1 and couldnt put it down. Sure you can get your ass handed to you in a couple of seconds first time playing but if you know when to run and when to fight you'll be fine (to start just fight one of those wasps. If its more than one or anything else then GTFO! lol). But I was really impressed by the first game. I was really surprised to think that this was on megadrive when I first played it....then I found out that it was actually on Master System and was even more surprised. It really is a fun game once you get past the difficulty curve....or difficulty ramp in this case.

But since then ive had all 4 on Megadrive Collection for 360 and I think I prefer 2 over the first. The first is still great but 2 is just so ridiculously hard that I actually enjoy being tortured by it. For some odd reason the first 2 phantasy stars are the only RPG's I really seem to enjoy grinding in. I still havent given 3 and 4 a shot though but I will do eventually.

I count them separately simply because the Online ones will never come to the VC.

Great idea! Since my problem with the game is the bull**** luck-based encounters, obviously I should engage in more bull**** luck-based encounters! Whyever didn't I think of that before? Oh Trapster, you are just bursting with the brilliant ideas.
