Famitsu gave this the top score possible, and it's become something of a rarity, but do any board members have any thoughts concerning the game? Seeing as I've dug out my PS2, I thought I might also catch up on some of the PS1 games I missed.

I highly recommend Xenogears for PS1 and Final Fantasy Tactics for PS1.
As for Vagrant Story, I have no idea.

Is FF Tactics on GBA and PS1 the same game?

Not exactly the same game. They have largely similar gameplay, and are set in the same world (the world of Final Fantasy XII), but the plots are different. As another bit of trivia, both games were developed by the producers of Ogre Battle (Quest), after they were absorbed into Square.

And to bring it back on subject, the main producer of Ogre Battle, Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII, Yasumi Matsuno, also produced Vagrant Story.

Someone mentioned Xenogears, that's one of my favorite games of all time.

As for Vagrant Story, a lot of people, myself included, missed out on this one because it came out at the beginning of the PS2's life. I did play a demo and I liked what I played, so I'd definitely recommend it.

some other underrated PS1 gems: Parasite Eve, Brave Fencer Musashi, Legend of Legaia, Suikoden (the first one will always be the best)

I'm really keen to play Parasite Eve, but it goes for ridiculous amounts of money on eBay, even more than Vagrant Story, so I'll stick with the latter for now.
