I don't play RPG's often but one I can definitely recommend is Kingdom Hearts for the PS2. It'd be best if you at least mildly like Disney stuff since Donald and Goofy follow you throughout most of the game but it's a fun game regardless of Disney or not. It's an Action-RPG so it's not quite like Final Fantasy but there are appearances from Final Fantasy characters and plenty of other references like spell names and such. Watch some game play videos and read some reviews if you're still not sure, but the game should be cheap to come by so it's not a total loss if you don't like it.

Here are some titles of RPGs I have played, I didn't list any Action RPGs or SRPGs or games with Final Fantasy in its title:

PlayStation:
- Breath of Fire III and Breath of Fire IV. Not a fan of the BoF series, but these are decent games.
- Chrono Cross. It's a decent title, lovely music.
- Grandia. Only played an hour of it and I really like it so far.
- Persona 2 Innocent Sin. There is a translated patch out.
- Persona 2: Eternal Punishment. A good title if you love the MegaTen series.
- Revelations Series: Persona. Aside from the laughable Americanization, a good title.
- Suikoden. Loved this game, though a shame I can't get into the later titles in the series.
- Xenogears. Recommended if you love mechas and a dramatic story.

I didn't liked these or wasn't too crazy about them, but you can also try out:
- Beyond the Beyond, Eternal Eyes, Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, Star Ocean: The Second Story, Wild Arms, and Wild Arms 2.

PlayStation 2:
- Radiata Stories. I love this game to death! Great dubbing, humorous, and I love the story.
- Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES. I only really played the original P3, but since FES includes all the extras, I list this game instead.
- Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4. If P3 was too slow-paced for you, then this game is a refreshing change of pace.

I didn't liked these or wasn't too crazy about them, but you can also try out:
- Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits, Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga, Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, Star Ocean 3: Till the End of Time, Suikoden III, Suikoden IV, Suikoden V, Tales of Legendia, and Unlimited SaGa.

PS1: Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete

Definitely a must-play. Archetypal story and characters, but wonderful charm. If I know kawaii, I figure he'll love Nall.

I've played all of it. It's fantastic and well worth playing. Hours of gameplay, great story and characters and a really involving and deep combat and levelling up system. Highly recommended.
