Default What's Your Favorite PS1 Game?

I've been buying a few PS1 games from eBay recently, so im in a bit of a PS1 mood. Im just wondering: Whats your favorite PS1 game?

For me, its Klonoa: Door To Phantomile. One of the greatest and most inovative games of all time (In my opinion).

Oh I dunno, either FFVII or Crash Bandicoot.

Really should play more. :/

Probably Grandia for me - I loved the characters and battle system, also its one of the few rpgs that I have bothered to play all the way to the end!

Well, I only have 4 and haven't played any of the massively praised RPGs (VIII isn't that praised), so it's currently Ape Escape, which is quite awesome, but I bet that'd change a lot if I can find some greats and build my collection at some point.

Final Fantasy Tactics, for sure. To this day, it's the best tactical RPG out there.

Probably Spyro: Year of the Dragon. I've only played a handful of PS1 games, despite having had it for 11 years.

Let's see...

Final Fantasy IX for sure, it's one of my all-time favorites. Most played is probably Formula 1 '97, best F1 game to date really. And for the laughs, Diablo 1 with the Swedish dubs, it's insanely bad voice-acting and is really fun because of that

There are always the classics as well, like Spyro, a game from the time were games for kids could also be incredible good games for adults. MGS went warm as well in the PS1, story-telling on a entire new level.

FFIX is good. I enjoyed VII but it was such an experience that I could never bring myself to play it again unlike VIII and IX. You could pick up 4 +6 for the PS1 too.

Everybody's Golf 2 is a solid and fun game and how could I have forgotten Tony Hawk's 2 and Metal Gear Solid?!

Using the same format from Yossarian's post:

Fighting: Shiritsu Justice Gakuen Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2.
Horror: Silent Hill.
Music: Bust A Groove 2 or pop'n music 6.
Puzzle: Magical Drop F: Daibōken Mo Rakujanai!
RPG: Final Fantasy VII or Persona 2 Innocent Sin.
Sports: Snowboard Kids Plus.

These are the games I've enjoyed playing on the PlayStation.

The winner is Xenogears.
While the story seems convoluted at times (I actually had to play it twice to understand the plot), it's still a darn good game with lots of SciFi elements (Soylent Greene anyone?).

Runners-up are:
The Lunar SSSC & Lunar EB remakes, Suikoden & MGS

Misadventures of Tron Bonne followed by the Metal Gear Solid VR Missions addon (better than the "real" game IMO).
No, seriously!

I haven't played many PS1 games, but out of few I have my favorite is definately Lunar Silver Star Story Complete. Sure the gameplay is pretty basic jrpg fare, but the story and characters are fantastic.
After Lunar SSC, Castlevania Symphony of the Night and Metal Gear Solid get top billing from me.

Definetely Einhander.

It's the most complete shooter ever, and the only title that can stand a chance is Ikaruga. Fortunately they're radically different so they can both sit on the throne of best SHMUPs of history.

Other fine games which discs hardly left my PlayStation:
Wipeout 2097
Tenchu (sorry, but spy clones will never be as cool as ninjas)
Bushido Blade (mostly for the game mechanincs and multiplayer)

Wow, you manage to praise two shooters I've never liked in a single post that even only contains two shooters. ^^
Probably the only other shooters that I consider to be nearly as overrated as these two would have to be Harmful Park and Metal Black.

I love shooters but I can't get myself to like any of these.

Checked out Einhänder and it looked pretty sweet, of course not released in Europe since we don't play games here.

Kurushi/Kurushi Final. Stupendous puzzle game - pretty hard to find. Devil Dice comes close too.

RTypes and RType Delta both got great PAL treatment - both run full screen.

Ridge Racer 4 and Wipeout 3SE - both still look pretty good. (RR4 comes with a cleaned up version of RR1 on a bonus disc).

Power Diggerz - great digger arcade game (!)

Bishi Bashi and Vib Ribbon - weird and wonderful.

The PS1 got a lovely version of Q*Bert - the original game is perfectly recreated but it also has an excellent modernisation of the game with loads of levels.

Final Fantasy VII (not overrated at all)
The Crash Bandicoot series (very good on PS1)
Gran Turismo (it was great but now you're better off getting a more modern version)
Silent Hill (best ever horror game)
Final Fantasy VI (in Europe it was first released on PS1 but other versions are better)
Kula World (very good puzzle game, rare but you can get it on PSN)
Kurushi

Digimon World 3 - Because it's awesome!
And because it's the first RPG I ever played the whole way through.

Putting 2 shmups that die hard shmups loved doesn't constitute overrated (Harmful Park and Metal Black). Barely anyone's heard of those.

I've heard of Metal Black, but I've never played it(I really want to, though). Never heard of Harmful Park, though, and I probably wouldn't like it.

I really want to play Einhander, though, it looks like a really cool game.

You like cute 'em ups? If so, give Harmful Park a try if you see it on the cheap or it's on PSN.

I share your sentiments on Einhander, it really looks like the "shmup to rule them all" ...or just a really good shmup.

Yeah, I didn't understand that either. I've never heard of Harmful Park, and it seems to be mostly diehard shooter fans who have played Metal Black.

And you should definitely play Metal Black, Mick. I have it on Taito Legends 2. It's awesome!

Einhander looks cool as well. I hope it hits PSN eventually!

EDIT: Boy, Harmful Park is so obscure that it doesn't even have it's own Wikipedia entry!

Unfortunately, Harmful Park is Japan only. It does look good, actually, but not $100+ good.

Taito Legend 2 is awesome. Why? It has Darius Gaiden, the shmup with hands down the best bomb...ever. That alone makes shelling $50 for Taito Legends 2 worthwhile. ...And it's only $10-$12 in Game Stops....I really need to get it too.

Yeah, next time I'm there, I gotta remember to look for it Taito Legends 1 and 2(Xbox and PS2)...and UGC...and USC.

Being obscure has NOTHING to do with being overrated or not. The people that DO know about it, usually rate it way high, which makes it overrated to me as I don't like it.

To a European gamer Einhänder would be obscure as it never got released here. Any shoot 'em up would be obscure to the standard gamer. Hell, even GTA is obscure to most people on this planet. So where would you draw the line? Overrating depends on whether a game is *surprise surprise* overrated or not. Nothing else.

Mega Man X4 was excellent, and Vandal Hearts was quite good too, although currently Ape Escape still has a firm grasp on number one (out of six...)

The only suprising thing here is how accurate your definition of overrated is. You rather obviously draw the line at people who play and/or know about video games.

There are barely any reviews (of Harmful Park), and a lot of them are from shmup fans, so it's hard to tell how much I'd like it...

But games were originally marketed for kids...And still are. Super Mario Bros. was a great game back then, and Super Mario Galaxy is a great game now.

Heart of Darkness. For no reason other than it was my Dad's favorate. I've never actually owned a PS1 or any games for it but I enjoyed watching him enjoy playing that one and trying to help him out with it as he wasn't very good at it.

Resident evil 2

I have a bunch of other favourites:

resident evil 1 +3
abes oddysee
spyro 1+3 (2 was okay)
rayman
overboard

While the PS1 did have quite an extensively large library of great games and alot of variety I feel it lacked the very best AAA games compared to the N64 with it's mario, zelda, goldeneye/perfect dark, etc.
Geniunely preferred the Saturn and N64s libraries to the PS1s to be honest.
