I loved that game. I was too young to realize at the time that each chapter is named after a film . I hope you got the instruction book as it had a helpful map in it. I got to the point where I could beat this without dying. I never got around to spending much time with its sequel Mafat Conspiracy, though.

Let me know your thoughts if you ever play it.

I guess I may as well post my NES games here finally. I still have them though my friend is borrowing them (since I don't have an NES).

Okay, here it goes:
Super Mario Bros / Duck Hunt
Faxanadu
Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode
Dr. Chaos
Dragon Warrior
Dragon Warrior II
Dragon Warrior III
Rygar
Ultima III: Exodus
Ninja Gaiden 3: The Ancient Ship of Doom
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
Metal Gear
P.O.W.: Prisoners of War
Willow

And I'm pretty sure that's it....

Welcome to the Betagam7 Jealousy-Inducers Club! I hope you got a good deal on it. Cart-only?

Yeah cart only...however, I found a website where I can print out a colored copy of the players guide book. It's only 137 pages long

The price? Lets just say it was under $100.00 US. I wasn't happy about spending as much as I did, but with this game if you find it less than $100 you need to jump on it.

Aren't all cart-only copies under $100 USD, or have they been going up in price since I was paying attention to the market? I thought the going rate was about $80-100 for cart-only, $100+ for cart and manual, and stupid prices for complete copies.

I was lucky enough to get my cart-only copy for around $35 or $45 CAD, IIRC.

The lowest I've ever seen a cart is $89.00 US. I got it for slightly more. Again, I normally wouldn't pay over $30 for a game, but this one just has to be in my collection at all costs. Why? not sure, I've never played this game. Will be so excited to give this a go soon.

Btw, have you guys seen how much the players guides are going for? more than most carts. I can't believe how crazy it is over this game.

Well, Nintendo do refuse to rerelease it on anything... :/

It's nothing to do with the quality of the game, and everything to do with the rarity of the game. Sold like crap, barely any were produced, picked up cult value, demand increased with fixed supply, etc.

+ Actraiser 2

I've no idea why I bought this when the original was too tough for me to complete on VC (Damn boss rush!).

Nice pickup there Bet. That's on my wish list right now. I actually heard it's easier than the first one. Let me know what you think.

I didn't find the first one to be that difficult except for the idiotic boss rush at the end. That extreme difficulty of that final segment spoiled what would otherwise have been an almost perfect games for me. I used magic to beat many of the games bosses but that wasn't an option with the rush.

As for Actraiser 2, I've heard its nowhere near as good as the first game (thanks largely to the removal of the God Sim aspect) but at a £5.50 for an (albeit tatty) boxed complete copy it was worth adding to my Quintet collection

Just tried it this morning. Early impressions are that it is hard (even on Easy) but beatable if you learn the patterns of the stage.

The thing I'm pleased to see is that it isn't a simple, one stage after the other action game like the "Arcade Mode" of the original Actraiser played.

You still control the flying fortress and can still choose which area to enter at any time. The game is seperated into 7 main areas (seemingly themed loosely after the 7 deadly sins) with two acts in each. Magic is now limited to how many scrolls you collect in the level but you know longer have to select which magics you can take into a world.

The main character controls quite differently to the one in the first game.

You can double jump which sends you into a downward float (he has wings) from which you can attack enemies and you can also aim your sword in three directions. You are also equipped with a shield that can be similarly aimed to block attacks which is a big improvement over the frustration of the original.

Perhaps most importantly despite the unfortunate removal of the God sim aspect the story still seems quite good with Quintet's usual Good vs Evil religious themes still surviving the dubious 90's NOA policies on that sort of thing.

It is bloody hard though (not helped by the lack of checkpoints) but so far its felt less cheap than Actraiser 1's action stages did in places due to the shield and better magic system.

The game uses passwords to save rather than battery back-up and you can try any stage as many times as you like although after five lives are gone you have to start it from the beginning.

The graphics and music are, of course excellent. Definately worth picking up, just don't break the bank for it.

Yeah, I checked it out on youtube the other day. It did indeed look truly dire. Cool concept hurt by generic execution and insane difficulty from the looks of it.

Back on topic

+ Another World (SNES)
+ Flashback (SNES)

Just purchased both from Demon212 so should be on their way although i won't be able to pick em up till later in the year.

I just bought a SNES that can play PAL, NTSC and JPN games. Illegal I know, but it saves me a lot of money.

It came with 2 NTSC games:

+ Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind
+ The Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse

Hit up that 50/60hz switch next. What's the base unit, PAL or NTSC?

As for illegal, I'm not sure if that's correct.

The base unit is NTSC, so that means PAL games would get a boost in speed, right?

I'm pretty sure it's illegal, I mean how could it be legal? The SNES is region locked so if you mess around with it so you can play games from other regions, well that can't be legal, right?

I've no practical experience of it but theoretically this should occur as I know that the reverse is true and that running an NTSC game on a PAL snes results in it being squashed into 50hz.

One problem you might encounter is that certain carts use a more advanced form of region locking that checks what hz the console is running at when it starts up. If the game detects 60hz when it should be 50hz (or vice versa) it blocks the game from booting and you get a message saying the game is incompatible with your system (see Nintendo not content with screwing PAL owners with lazy conversions also used the difference to implement region protection - nice guys arn't they!).

One noteable game that does this is the PAL only classic Terranigma but more common titles like Pop 'n' Twin Bee also do it so you had best check before you buy.

With a 50/60hz switch you can escape the problem by booting the game at one frequency then switching it over after a few seconds when the game has stopped running its checks.

In Europe its all tied into this. However the only person I've seen prosecuted in the UK is a guy selling modded xboxes with pre-installed ROMS. It's all incredibly grey but morally I would say that unlike that guy you are doing nothing wrong.
It's also arguable that nobody would even attempt to enforce the law over such an old device as the SNES. It's mostly aimed at modding consoles to play pirated commercially viable material which isn't what you are doing.

It was certainly never illegal to import SNES games at the time and companies like FIRE made their money through building adapters that technically do what your switch does.

Thank you, that clears everything up. It would be best for me to buy a bunch of PAL and JPN games to see what will happen.

I do hope that they will all work like he said, because I paid a little more than you would for a common used SNES.

If you do find yourself wanting to add the hz switch (which you'll need to for games like Terranigma) then here's a FAQ that tells you how to do it:

http://home.freeuk.net/markk/Console...0Hz_Switch.txt

I used to know a site that had a comprehensive list of which games had which lockout, I'll try and dig out the URL so you don't waste your money buying a game that you can't run. 95% of games should be fine though.
