Lets see. I'll take it for a test drive. Did I do it right?
Reservoir Dogs ***** I have always been a fan of Tarantino's work, but haven't seen Res until last night. The plot was great, the entire mood of the movie was perfect, and the actors were very convincing. It was fantastic, almost as good as Pulp Fiction, which is one of my all-time favorites. |

Deja Vu
***1/2 (is that cheating?) A very bizarre movie, not at all what I was expecting. There was a moment in there that I turned to my wife and said 'oh he's going to XX XXXX XX XXXX (edit to avoid spoiler!) to save the day...and it's going to ruin the movie...'. Well, he did eventually do just that but it does not ruin the movie! By turns a great thriller and a poor sci-fi, this is worth a look as a weird curio.

Saw III
*1/2 (still not sure if that's cheating) I really enjoyed the first of this series, enjoyed the second but in the third the filmmakers have decided to junk any sort of storyline completely and concentrate on tense and gruesome situations designed to offend and give you a second taste of that pizza you ate an hour ago. Which was fine for the first half...tedious and wearing after the full 1hr 50 mins.

Pirates of the Caribean 3: At World's End
**** With all the stuff of people complaining of how long the newest Pirates movie is, I for one thought every minute was worth it. For the final Pirates film just about everybody returns for the breathtaking finale. Barbossa made this movie so good, so funny and so enjoyable to watch, I am so glad that he came back for the final film! The visual and special effects are once again unbelievable and jawdropping. The story is pretty straight forward: Fight for your pirate livelyhood. There are twists and turns in At World's End that I didn't expect. Of course, I'm not going to tell you what they are, go see it! In closing, the final scene in the movie hints that there could possibly be a fourth Pirates movie, but I doubt it will happen. I'd love to see a fourth movie and again, I don't think it will happen.

Big Bully
*** 1995. Tom Arnold. Rick Moranis. Moranis plays David, a teacher returning to his childhood town to teach at his old school where he was previously tortured by the school bully. Guess who's teaching shop? The ever watchable Moranis is matched by Tom Arnolds repulsive bully in a great family film with a nice, warmer-than-the-fireplace-in-the-day-after-tomorrow ending. Best watched at 3.00am while suffering a bout of insomnia.

Miami Vice
* All style, a little story but no substance. As a fan of Mann this was a big disappointment. Just goes to show that all that glisters is not gold...had me yawning within twenty minutes, stuck through in the hope of something cool happening and bemused that nothing did.

The Devils Backbone
***** Blown away by this! It's rare that I'll dip my toes into the hit & miss 'World Cinema' section of HMV. It takes an exceptional recommendation from one of my buds (Run Lola Run) or a lot of positive buzz in general (City of God) to get my attention. I'd put off picking this up as, as much as I'd like what I'd seen of del Toro's work, there was always something more pressing. Then I began to notice the rave notices it was getting in the middle of reviews for Pans Labyrinth so I decided to pick it up (for £7) the other day. Watched it at the weekend and WOW. The Hollywood film I'd equate this to is The Others. Similar in tone and theme, The Devils Backbone succeeds where I feel The Others failed. A taut plot with great performances from both the child and more mature cast members with some real scares in there. There is a sense of impending doom and an eerie realism to the locale that sets this apart from the average Hollywood ghost story and the immaculately paced ending ensures that you'll never forget watching The Devils Backbone... Highly recommended!
