My prediction: This thread's going to get LONG.

My collection: Not listed anywhere else on the net (in a comprehensive list), so I'll have to type in all games manually for which I definitely lack the time at the moment, but it'll come...and oh boy, will it come.

I never really got into the PC game market, per se. Had a stint of a month playing one of those free MMORPG's called La Tale, but lost interest pretty quick. Other than that, these are all I have (counting my wife's):

Mine: Roller Coaster Tycoon Deluxe

Wife: Diner Dash 1 and 2, all the CSI games, and Cake Mania 2

Are you going to tally the collections and individual lists like the other threads do?

So far my only game is Sango Fighter (freeware). I had a few more but I got rid of them.

Just a question, what is it that you don't like about PC gaming? I often see people say "I'm not into PC gaming" but never stating the reason why

For me, when I got my first computer in 1999, I was planning on playing games with it. However, I got so used to the way consoles had made it simpler, I stuck to those. I chose to upgrade my consoles every 4 to 5 years as opposed to upgrading my computer every 6 months to play the most up-to-date games. More reasons:
1. My computer is in my bedroom and I would have to sit in an uncomfortable chair and my consoles are in the living room where I can play on big screen sitting in my recliner
2. No worries of viruses or incompatiblity issues or other crap from a PC

There are more, just can't recall all of them. Of course, these are just my personal preferences and doesn't mean I think PC gaming sucks or anything....just not my cup of tea.

I don't know if that was an open question, but since I'm no PC gamer either, I wish to answer for myself as well: Almost every time I begin a game, I cant finish it because my computer gets infected with something, or starts to slow down to the point it's unplayable. And it's not even a bad computer!

Can people stop saying the whole upgrade every six months thing? System requirements for games are going to remain quite stagnant for the next couple years for the majority of games.

1. I'm just going to post this link on HTPC's for being so well written.
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=366437
Beautiful.

2. Can't get around that.

@Evildevil: Yes, I don't think that's your computer, but your browsing habits. Do you visit shifty places without any antivirus to speak of?

Anyway, I think we ought to have somebody compile one of those fancy big lists on a new thread.

Response:

1. The chair was the most expensive part when I bought my gamer system last year, sit comfortable and spend money on the ergonomic parts

2. Is it just me that avoid viruses? I've had computers since 1997 (at the age of and broadband computers since 2002 (at the age of 13) and I've not had any virus even once, I don't even use a anti-virus program since it's just eating resources and blocking things it shouldn't with its firewall and except a spy-ware or two I've never encountered a virus on my computer or suffered from slow-downs except those that come with Vista.

When playing consoles I just miss all the stuff I can do on the PC, I'm kind of a multitasker that does loads of things at once:
Play a game
Skype
Music
Alt-Tab browsing internet
Watching TV

While as on a console I can:
Play a game

Even though I agree that some games work better on console I would say that the PC wins with a million miles overall. Thanks for sharing your reasons though

I'm not much of a PC gamer either, mostly because my current PC can't run many games, and buying a new PC isn't economicaly feasable at this time. Another big factor though is that the PC just doesn't have many games in alot of genres I like.

Anyways, here's my list:
Sam and Max Season 1
Command and Conquer
Halo
Homeworld
Knytt Stories
Solitaire
Minesweeper

and that's all!

Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None
Amber: Journey's Beyond
Blood
Doom
Doom II
Final Doom
Duke Nukem 3D
Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition
Earthworm Jim
The House of the Dead
The House of the Dead 2
Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler's Green
Quake

Overall I don't like PC gaming. Computers are for Word, Photoshop, Internet, and Doom. All the perks that are said to come with this genre are perks I don't care about.

So you've only bought Orange Box and Spore? You should really look into the loads of other games that exist

Last time, it was because I updated my anitvirus. It made everything go far too slowly. All in all, it was likely because I accidentally had more than one antivirus program running concurrently. Started eating at the memory. Thanks for assuming, though. Believe it or not, I'm not a complete idiot.

Sorry for assuming. It's just when you say you get infected with something so regularly... Maybe you should look into one of these light antivirus programs and stick with it.

I just don't really know how some people are such virus magnets.

Thanks. I've had better luck recently since SpySweeper added Antivirus to its normal protection, though, so I'll be sticking with that for awhile. Generally speaking though, I do stick with my reasoning for not being a PC gamer. There's always a risk factor of losing the savefile. (And making copies wont work since the only game I play is heavily modded.)

I wasn't aware that consoles didn't have that problem.

In my experiences, I find that the risk is much higher on the PC, at the very least. I bought a used PS1 a few years ago, and plugged in my old memory cards, and I was surprised to see my data survived almost a decade in storage. Obviously battery saves like SNES games are a bit different, but it only ever effected me in two games - Super Punch-Out and Super Mario RPG. Both of which are now on VC, so that problem has dissipated.

You're still acting like it is impossible to lose a memory card or break a console. Just back up saves to USB drives, CD's, online storage, external harddrives, SD cards etc.

Steam
Penumbra Collector's Set (Overture/Black Plague/Requiem)
Loom

PC
Day of the Tentacle / Sam and Max: Hit the Road

I'm new to this PC gaming lark, is there a simple way to find out the spec of my machine so I can pick games that I can play?

Well, what OS are you using? If it's Windows XP, go to Start, Control Panel, and then System. You should have some, if not most, of what you need there.

Thanks Tides. I can get most of the memory info from there but how about my graphics card? I'm using XP.

Also, thank you for buying the Penumbras. Those deserve some more attention. A lot more actually.

.....For some reason, that didn't really occur to me. Granted, I would have no idea how to back up a save off an SNES cartridge or PS1 memory card. I don't believe I was acting like it's impossible to lose console saves, though. In my experiences, I've had worse luck with PC saves. And I can only honestly judge things through my own experiences.

On the PC it's at least your own fault if you lose a save, you make that choice

....How so? As I've already said, the only PC game I play is heavily modified, so backing up a save is almost impossible. It's as much as my fault as it would be for letting a console overheat, or by not replacing old batteries in SNES or Game Boy cartridges.

Also, thank you for buying the Penumbras. Those deserve some more attention. A lot more actually.
Thank you! I'll try that when I get home.

I downloaded the demo of Penumbra Overture on your recommendation on an unrelated thread (scary games?) and enjoyed it. I liked the level of interaction and detail. I got killed(?) by the dog but I guess that's the point of the demo!

Both Steam and the official website are offering 50% discount on the whole series so it seemed rude not to get it!

Steam (SeveredJoke)
Plants Vs Zombies - Awesome

I tried to get Braid but as I couldn't even get the demo to work I wasn't going to risk it.

Get a decent Internet Protection kit like Norton/ Bit Defender or McAfee not those free things from the internet that promise you a lot.
Since I use the payed ones my computer is as clean as a crystal and works well.
Btw. If you dont want to waste too much money on those and also dont want to download one of those in a illegal way, just get a cheap OEM one they mainly put on new computers, they sell a lot on ebay for not too much and is the same one as retail version only without box (thats how I do it).

Don't get a Anti-Virus program and stop being careless when browsing and you can play your games with better performance. Firefox + AdBlock + NoScript blocks the most. XP is also better than Vista unless you want DirectX 10 or the upcoming 11. If you're not that much of a gamer you can also Dual-Boot with some Linux Distribution and play the games trough Wine which ensures a virus free enviroment that on top of that also defragments itself thus keeping it clean and fast.

If you still want some kind of anti-virus I've heard good things about AVG Anti-Virus, maybe not as good (still not necessary) than others but it's free.

If you are going to be playing games, but also want Linux, it is best to dual-boot with your preferred version of Windows and using that for all your games. Jumping through the hurdles of WINE and occasionally lacking driver support to maybe get a game running at a reasonable pace isn't quite worth it. Linux can be good if you are great at getting viruses with Windows while browsing the net though. Also, Windows can automatically defragment itself too you know. Lastly, there really are some great, free, light anti-virus applications that do well like the one posted above this block of text. I know I'm not using Norton with my next build if I'm going to be using an anti-virus at all. Slow and intrusive.

I've been blowing $50/year on protection as it is. People need to learn to stop assuming things. Webroot seems to be doing a lot better than Trend Micro has. I used to use Webroot for spyware protection and Trend Micro for virusses, but a more recent Webroot update added virus protection, and that's been working like a charm...

I was really close to picking up Warcraft II BattleNet Edition today for $0.99, but then I noticed it was the German edition (somehow—how did that get there?!).

Hmm...

Do the EU versions of PC games usually have language select options... or would it be all German?

Does this include PCDL games? If not, then so far I only have The Orange Box, a game I greatly regret buying...

Yeah, Dual-Booting is probably the best way to have a safe "surfing" computer and a "gaming" computer at the same time, of course, you can manage quite well in XP or Vista without getting any viruses. I only suggested Linux due to people was complaining about viruses, it's rather impossible to make a OS-destroying virus in Linux. And Wine, some applications are considered "Platinum" in their AppDB which means it's just install and run as normal or make some tiny changes to the game, some are always unlucky though as you say, but hey, it's free

Just like console games, most games do have these options, but I would say that for a game this old it probably will be German text. This is a guess based on StarCraft which only have English as selectable language during its install, and it was released a bit after WC2.
