Arrow Nebulus review

Nebulus - Commodore 64

Weird things are happening on Planet Nebulus. Someone or something has begun building huge towers on the sea bottom without having a construction license. You get to the base of each tower in your submarine. You must guide your creature around and through all eight towers in order to reach the top ..

Why is R.O.B picking this up now? The game was released and reviewd by NL some time ago.

Fun game though, but rock hard, I've never made it past the 3rd tower but I can see how with proper memorisation it could be possible to beat it.

They may have reposted it or moved it to a new section of the site. Sometimes when they reshuffle their site around R.O.B. gets all excited again.

I am considering getting this. Been ages since I downloaded a C64 game. I already have loads of tough games to beat though.

Its a good game. Graphically very impressive for the rotating tower effect and sonically pleasing with nice music and/or sound effects that can be turned off and on.

It is tough but not in a cheap sense. learning the patterns of the towers is key. One of the better C64 games available and certainly one of the best in the NA territories.

I wholeheartedly encourage you to download a C64 game though. I might start playing it again if you get it and decide to tackle it.

Does it allow continues or do you have to start all over when you run out of lives?

It sounds interesting...

No continues I'm afraid. 3 lives is yer lot

Like most games of the era you can get extra lives by racking up points. The game has a between towers submarine section where you shoot fish for the points. Personally I've only ever made it to the 3rd tower but I havn't played it as much as I did as a kid. It does seem beatable with the right commitment and ability to remember the pattern of the towers.

Cheers for the output. Espically on the difficulty level bit. Will download when I get my Wii online again.

Just finished this one. At first this looked very difficult, but it’s actually quite easy once you know the layout of all the towers and enemy movement, as well as the hidden traps. It’s also quite addictive and rewards skill.

If you like games that reward you for figuring out how levels works by correct movement (e.g. right time to jump from platforms and when to move away from enemies etc.) as well as having a sense of achievement for finishing each stage, then Nebulus/Tower Toppler comes highly recommended.

Now that someone else has beaten Nebulus I should give this a second try.
In all C64 games I have some fear because I couldn't beat them back then.
I was very young and C64 was my first gaming experience.

But now I have beaten Boulder Dash, Last Ninja 1&2, Paradroid and Impossible Mission for the first time ever (without cheating of any kind).
Uridium is still too hard though, need another 20 years of practise.

Everytime I hear Nebulus - and Jumpman as well - two very good games, I want to try them again, but remember the epic fail I had with those games when I was a kid. They still were pretty fun though.

Slangman gives me confidence in at least trying Nebulus again. Thanks man. This game is back on my get-list.

Wow. I'm impressed. How many levels were there? I don't think I ever made it past the third.

Without spoiling anything, is their an ending or is it the old return to level one trick

I think the level intro suggests there are eight towers. (plus the submarine bonus stage.)

I too would like to know if this game has an ending.

What we know is that the title screen has been removed from the VC version.

I just found out there's a Game Boy version called CASTELIAN.

A NES version too which omits the Submarine sections in favour of a vertical walkalong section.

Seeing the boxart ... (a castle instead of towers in an ocean) that walkalong section makes more sense I suppose.

Thanks. Yeah there are eight towers in the game, as well as the bonus submarine shooting stages between the first tower and eight.

There is indeed an ending, but it isn't anything spectacular. After the ending it goes back to the title screen where you can re-start the game again.

Stuck on the third tower? I found that one quite easy to beat, apart from a certain obstacle at the beginning of the stage. After that it’s easy once you figure out how the enemy moves.

I would defiantly give Nebulus a second try, especially if you haven’t played the game for 20 years. First time I downloaded Tower Toppler I could barely pass the second tower. However after leaving the game for a while and recently trying again I found myself progressing a lot faster.

If you are willing to keep at the game, then I am sure you will beat it.
I am glad I got you interested in the game again.

The Game Boy version eh? I will keep my eye on that one.

I think that the key to progression with most of the C64 action titles is to keep on plugging away at them regularly enough to learn the patterns. I remember when SKTTR and I were having our Uridium high score trading contest on here and both of us ended up progressing quite far into the game through the aid of repetition to our memorisation of attack patterns.

The reality is that Nebulus is one I tend to play now and again but I don't have the focus I might have had as a kid when game buying was more limited and we had to stick with what we had.

Maybe I'll download it for Frodo and play it on the DS while I'm away from my Wii to get some practise in.

Its probably my favourite C64 game and i agree with the tower effect looking spectacular, the C64 version is awsome and the Amiga version is only slightly better simply because of the extra colour palette.
