| I am asking this particular question because there exist relatively newer (and rarer) arcade games. Would it be possible to implement these arcade games on the Wii? (P.S. There are a bunch of comments on various video sites asking the same thing |

| Not while Nintendo insists on a 40MB maximum file size we won't

| Lakitu | Might be possible, if you dont mind your memory being full everytime you want to play.

| There must be enough space on the Wii itself for the game to be booted from the SD card. In other words, even if Nintendo got rid of its size restrictions, a game would still need to be less than 512MB otherwise it wouldn't be able to play. |

| Re: "It might be possible" NO. IT. ISN'T. As stated Nintendo has a strict policy about the size of any downloadable game and as Hansolo says even if this was relaxed the system itself still needs to have enough memory free to run your games. They are only stored on the SD card, they don't play directly from it. Even though it can appear that way.

| Banzai Bill | That's if we get any arcade games at all. At this rate we won't have to worry about it. |

| Lakitu | Why not? As long as the file size for the game ain't too big, modern games can have their place on the VCA. Like 1944: The Loop Master, Mr. Driller, Giga Wing, Mars Matrix, Progear, & maybe even Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition for example. I have a feeling though that the games on the Sega Naomi board which should be pretty modern will have to wait their turn until the next nintendo system's VC opens up at least. In the meantime, games on the Sega Model 1, 2, & maybe 3 will be released on the Wii VC to tide you all over. Last edited by marktheshark; 3rd August 2009 at 07:09 PM. |

| Monty Mole | I asked this earlier on a different thread in this section. I really wanted to see the Mario Kart arcade versions available. The answer I got was that the wii has size limits to the games available to download so it is unlikely. But I suppose if the file fits under the max capacity limit, it could happen. Plus the rights battle and that other regular stuff. Still hoping for Mario Kart Arcade over here!!!!

| Not just size limits, but I doubt they could write an efficient enough emulator for many modern arcade games that would even run on the Wii's hardware. Furthermore, arcade hardware differs so much that they would have to write a very specific emulator for each game they want, or a very broad emulator that isn't very efficient. Neither are a viable option for Nintendo.

| Or they could license Mame - it's already been ported I think. Or they could recompile newer arcade games for the Wii. As software has gotten larger and more complex there is much less room (and need) for platform specific code. Anything from this decade is probably 99% C, with middleware or 1% assembly. Most PS2 games were written in C, for example, and they can be ported. Newer arcade games would be the same. In contrast, SNES games were mostly written in assembler. |
