Arrow Altered Beast review

Altered Beast - VC Arcade

In this classic arcade game you are a hero raised from the dead by the god Zeus to rescue his daughter Athena. With a scenery inspired by Ancient Greece, you have to fight hordes of undead and demons, with a boss at the end of each level until you meet the god Neff, who holds the girl captive. The ..

3/10

I am truly baffled why people have such fond memories of this game and why it has been released again.

The best version of this game was the handheld LCD version (not the watch!). Can't find a photo but it was the same range as Castlevania.

The reason people have fond memories for this game is because it was the Sega Genesis' pack-in game before Sonic came out in '91.

I understand but that doesn't mean it's good!

I love the Megadrive version mostly because of nostalgia (It may have been the first game I ever played) but I enjoy roaming beat 'em ups generally, so will probably download this.

I never played the MD version, but this game - along with Shinobi and Golden Axe - really helped cement Sega's arcade presence for me back in the late 80s. It just seemd so graphically intense and imaginative compared to some of the other things out there, and the transformation scenes seemed dramatic at the time, even though they seem cheesy now. I haven't played it since, so I can't contest the general feeling that it doesn't hold up, but I understand the nostalgia.

True, but remember, this was likely the first MD game people played after ditching their NES for their 16-bit ventures. This was just the start, even though it was bad.

And hey, no one can't be launch perfect...

Altered Beast isn't good, but I don't think it's 3/10 material. I don't have any nostalgia for the title but I feel it's a decently fun game at times. Not worth 900 points by any means but it isn't abysmal.

Again like Golden Axe, this is another case where the arcade version is superior to any released home console version.

Unlike Golden Axe though, the arcade Altered Beast has seen a (recent) home console release on the newest Genesis collection for 360 and PS3.

I can't believe this costs 900 points. Thats too much for a game that has aged quite badly. I know it's the arcade version but still.

But then again for PAL gamers This release is a bonus since this version will run in 60hz unlike the MD version.

Meh. I tried the XBLA version(same as this version), and it was just as bad as the Genesis version. Pass.

I actually liked the Sega Master System version of this game... but that's all nostalgia talking and I know it. I bet I wouldn't even be able to play it, now. To be fair, I haven't played it since... '89 or so?

Checked out the 360 version and it is the arcade. Played through the first level on a trial.

Yeah, the controls are ****ty, but still. I loved playing this game in the arcade and it is still fun today. I'll probably pick it up soon.

So it happens to be a pile of crap that smells better than another, similar pile of crap?

Personally, I found both versions of both games equally crappy.

Altered Beast for Genesis (Megadrive) mini-review posted to USENET, from August 1989 just as the Genesis was launching in the United States.... Just for fun!

Altered Beast

While the Genesis version of Altered Beast is a very good
game, it is certainly not "identical" to the arcade version like Sega
(and many game magazines) have continuously insisted. The graphics and
sound aren't as good, but most of the arcade features have been
preserved. The Genesis version can be played by two people
simultaneously, but that requires a second controller. As I mentioned
earlier, the Genesis version has four independently scrolling
backgrounds (in round 1), while the arcade version has only a single
background. Also, the images are not as large in the Genesis version
(but are even smaller in the SMS version). There is a little screen
flicker while the bosses are appearing, and the game has a few minor
bugs (for instance when the 3-headed wolves walk on the walls,
sometimes they appear to be floating slightly above it). But other
than that, it's a very good game. RATING: VERY GOOD
