Is Ocarina Of Time About To Become 2nd Best?

Since it's launch in 1998, Miyamoto's masterpiece "The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time" has filled the number one spot of many "Best Game Ever" lists. But is it about to give up it's crown?

Currently ranked at number one on popular video game ratings system GameRankings.com, Ocarina Of Time has a rating average of 97.68%. The rating, which is calculated as an average from a collection of popular website sources, has had Link's classic quest sit atop of the charts for the past 10 years but with the spectacle of Rockstar's new Grand Theft Auto game about to land at our feet at 00:00AM this very evening, it might finally be time for Nintendo's (in my opinion) best game ever to step to the side.

With a rating calculated from 12 reviews (OOT has 32) the XBOX 360 version of GTA4 is currently sitting with an average score of 99.25%. Given the sheer hype of the game as the reviews fall in we can't see the game dropping by too much either (although GameSpot.com don't like reviewing games higher than 9.6).

Many reviews already consider GTA4 to be the best game of this decade if not the best game ever.

Either way - it's a feat that has to be acknowledged. Few games have come close to Ocarina Of Time in the past 10 years - with only The Orange Box and Super Mario Galaxy posing a threat.

It's a testament to both how good Miyamoto's classic is and also how good GTA4 is going to be.

I really have fun with GTA for the first month or two but then I get a little tired of them. I have heard that the story is awesome though. If I owned a PS3 or 360 then I would have picked this up.

Notice how everyone was going crazy happy when it looked like Mario Galaxy was going to beat Ocarina to the top of the list, while there's been next to nothing said about GTA IV as of yet.

I'll have my copy tomorrow anyway, it looks like the best game ever to me, but to each his/her own. I know that games like that aren't everyone's thing, regardless of how much gameplay footage doubters of GTA have watched.

Sandbox games are a little too open for my personal tastes, but I can respect the GTA games for what they are. They're not my cup of tea, but I would never call them bad games.

Still, GTA4 feels very flavor-of-the-month to me, just in terms of the hype it's getting. I'm sure it'll be well-received, but I seriously doubt it'll have the staying power or legendary status that Ocarina currently enjoys. If it does secure the top spot on gamerankings, it won't keep it for ten years, you can be sure of that.

I think it's phenomenal that Ocarina has latest this long. I don't really think it's anywhere near the best game ever. But then again, I don't think any of the contenders have been, either. Remember, this has nothing to do with what's the best game—just what's the best-reviewed game.

i liked the first GTA for running people over, for maybe the same reason i liked carmageddon. but the 3d ones never really interested me

With 'hardcore gamers' (and likewise reviewers) in such a frenzy to find ANYTHING to play besides Wii, they're going to inflate scores and hype up everything even more now that Wii is popular as backlash. Plus, its one of the biggest games of the year and they can't anger their loyal readers. Its the same senario as with Halo 3.

Its not me stating this because I like Wii, its just fact. The Wii is the power player on the block now and to hype up the games on the other systems, you have to put a little more into them besides 'This game is M rated and it'll make you cooler than playing Mario Kart' to make it sell. Add all this to the fact that the XBOX360 is losing popularity now and the PS3 is still in its upwards struggle to gain popularity, you can see why sites may not just be doing they're normal 'Its just another sequel, 5 points off by default' junk they usually do.

Okay, but reviews are the closest thing to a quantifiable measurement as to a game's quality that there is. I don't personally think objective quality exists in forms of entertainment or expression, but so far as distinguishing the perceived quality of a title from the rest of the pack is concerned, critical consensus is pretty much the only tool we have. Citizen Kane isn't my favorite American film (though I do love it), but I have no problem with it generally being considered the greatest narrative picture to have ever been produced in the country.

Except Halo 3 didn't get anywhere near the kind of reviews this game is getting at the moment. This idea seems a little far-fetched to me. It is certainly possible that hype is informing the views of the reviewers and thus the scores are inflated--that's a pretty common thing. But I doubt it's out of a collective conspiracy to cut the Wii down to size. Let's not forget that the best reviewed game of this generation, until GTAIV, was Mario Galaxy.
