Post Nintendo Wii system update 3 is now live (Joystiq)

Filed under:

The Wii Shop channel was closed for a few hours this morning and when it opened back up, a new system update was made available. It may not have delivered the announced "Check Mii Out" channel or added any Wii Ware to speak of, but it did give us a big, ugly clock on the main menu.

As for technical improvements, users are reporting shorter load times when switching channels as well as faster disc read speeds all around. The news and weather channels got some touch ups as well but most of the work seems to have gone into the shop channel which now supports a new, streamlined interface, search functions and a list of the most popular titles. Spoiler: only games featuring the word "Mario" in the title make up the top five.

A full list of patch notes may be viewed after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

This is quite interesting news. Sounds like the Wii Shop will be a lot quicker and easier to use from now on.

Has anyone checked out the update yet?

I just updated and it's great IMO.

There's now the time displayed in the Wii Menu. Also there are todays News displayed directly in the New-Channel Window. Same goes for the actual weather in the weather channel window. No need to open the channels anymore for quick (weather-)news.

In the shop, browsing through the games is much easier now. You can search games and display the games by developer, system and I forgot.
Also it seems that the shop channel is much faster now too.

I'm happy with the update EXEPT....where are my frigging NeoGeo games?
ggrrrrr

The shop redesign sounds most welcome: I wonder if it's too much to expect that this is work that was needed in order for Euro users to start being able to buy Wii points using their collected star points...

Unfortunately I won't be able to until my dad gets wireless internet in my house. The friend of mine who had wireless moved a couple weeks ago. Hopefully Verizon will get their lazy butts in gear. I've tried to talk my dad into getting cox but all he did waqs complain about how expensive it is and such. So no updates or VC games for a while for me.

No really big changes, but they're nice and small. Changes are:

-Wii Menu now displays the current time where the little "Wii Menu" used to be.
-Forecast Channel displays the current weather on the Wii Menu.
-News Channel displays headlines on the Wii Menu.
-Names in your address book can be moved to empty spots in the same way you move channels.
-Messages are differently coloured (So you can tell apart what you played today and actual normal messages).
-Calendar doesn't show days on which you played games, only days on which you have actual messages.

Wii Shop changes:
-Title screen overhaul, now lists latest 4 pieces of news and 4 recommended titles, you can also click the title to bring up a total of 20 recommended games.
-Titles You've Downloaded moved to the main menu.
-Can sort games by Genre.
-Can sort games by Publisher.
-Can search for specific titles by entering a word to search for.
-Sort by system has been changed to have a scrollbar (Hint at more systems soon?).
-Popular Titles added to the Wii Shop (Shows 20 most popular current titles).
-Wii Points at the bottom of the screen now lights up when you scroll over it.
