Too many to list really but here are a few off the top of my head:

Fire 'n Ice - Excellent sequel to solomon's key.
Mendel Palace - Arcade action/puzzle game with 2-player. Addictive.
Vice: Project Doom - Blends racing, fps and platforming with ninja gaiden style cutscenes.
Clash at Demonhead - Pure awesome.
Burai Fighter - Interesting shooter with good replay value.
Magic of sheherazade - Another cool hybrid title, action rpg set in the arabic.
Gun Nac - Excellent topdown shooter from Compile. But looking at this thread, maybe I didn't need to mention it. That's good
Ufouria - Free-roaming platformer with lots of charm.
T & C 2: Thrilla's surfari - Another fun 2-player game.
TMNT III - Maybe not underrated but it gets overshadowed by both the prequel and Turtles in Time even though it does a lot of things better than them.

Nemo the dream master, Flintstones game with the time machine (really you should try this one, it was really good) and Zelda II is sometimes too underrated.

Default NES Golf

NES Golf. I can't believe that a game that was so widely played when the NES came out is not available. I would have thought this would have been one of the first releases or at least released before Mario Golf for the 64.

I've given up on Tecmo Super Bowl being released, so this is my new cause.

Megaman 1 NES: Some people only prefer to Megaman 2 as a beginning, why ? I don' t know: Maybe because it' s a more colourfull and toyish game or because it' s a bit less difficult ? Anyway, Megaman 1 in my opinion is a true Megaman starter.

Mega Man 1 was the beginning.
Mega Man 2 was the revolution.
And we all like a good revolution.
Except Big Brother.

Another underappreciated NES game is Journery To Silius.

P.S. Anyone think Strider was an underappreciated NES game (haven't played it myself)?

Nope. I thought Strider on the NES was horrible.

Would Bionic Commando be considered an underappreciated NES game?

Meh, Didn't think so...

I never had a NES, and thus haven't played any NES game that would be considered "underrated", but I'll throw these games I've heard of out from the top of my head:

Gargoyle's Quest II
Fire n' Ice
Little Nemo
Faxanadu
Shadow of the Ninja
Metal Storm

Clash At Demonhead

I've never heard of this game before, and I just downloaded the ROM for it because a site recommended it. I've only played it briefly, but so far I'm finding it very enjoyable. Not a lot of people here have mentioned it.

Believe it or not, there is a resteraunt nearby that has NES Golf and Excitebike on one of those table top video game machines that you don't see anymore.

I didn't mind NES Golf, espcially for its time.

Faxanadu
Jackal
Legendary Wings, off the top of my head. All under appreciated games.

I'm going to have to go with Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. I've recently played through this game, and I fell that many downgrade this game truly because it isn't really a Castlevania. I really liked the difficulty with fighting, and the RPG system wasn't that bad. The one thing that really got my attention about the game was the night and day system. Now you have to admit for a NES game this is truly a amazing accomplishment. The only thing that really destroyed it was the obscure puzzles, and memorization of specific random details.

Yeah, if you named it something else, people probably would have liked it. It's just because it wasn't Castlevania as we know it.

No, in fact, people might have liked it less. The main reason why people didn't like it was because it was confusing, with obscure hints and puzzles (some of them at least) that seem to follow moon logic, as well as a lame final boss. Collecting hearts is also a chore IMO.

Jackel? Wasn't that the game where you drove a jeep around? It had the over the top view? Man do I miss that game. I had it but my mom gave it away at to our neighbor's son when I was 10.

It's quite the nice game, it has excellent soundtrack, origin of Bloody Tears, gameplay is fun. But the complete lack of direction and obscure tasks are so annoying, it has zero difficulty as well.

But all in all its not too shabby, now I'm off to listen to Bloody Tears a few times

I don't remember reading that Mr. Gimmick was released in the US.

"Gimmick! was released by Sunsoft in 1992 in Japan. Shortly thereafter, the game was released in Scandinavia, Europe under the title Mr. Gimmick!. The game was not overly successful and did not find a sizeable audience until the resurgence of NES via computer emulation. Though a cult classic of sorts, Gimmick! never received a proper sequel. The game was reviewed in the July 1992 issue of the American Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine, however, the game never came out."

The original Mario Bros 2 (The lost levels). I've tried to beat it on and off for years, I still can't do it. It's kind of a nightmare actually.

When I was young, these games were almost unheard of and underappreciated:

- 8 Eye's. Very difficult platformer with puzzles and co-op.
- Crystalis. When I rented this game a while ago, I really liked it.
- The Guardian Legend. Happy to know that there are people who have heard of this game online!
- Ironsword: Wizards & Warriors II. C'mon, it has Fabio on the cover!!
- Legend of the Ghost Lion. Not the best RPG around, I love the whole system with summoning things from your items.
- Tombs & Treasure. Great to see a game based around the Mayans.
- Yoshi. I think this one got overshadowed by Yoshi's Cookie.

That's all I can think of.

Zelda ll

I don't get it, it was only the second game in the series, and yet people were already complaining it was straying from the formula! Nintendo was simply trying something new, and from what I've seen, Zelda ll looks alot better than the original. Yes, it might have been hard, but weren't most games pretty hard back then? It still had quite a bit of exploration in it, and some great music too. I don't think it deseverd all of the crap it got.

It wasn't as fun as the first Zelda game, even if it was a pretty good game in its own right. I personally am surprised noone hated on SMB2 as much as Zelda 2, myself.

Word, I loved Zelda II, once I got used to it(which didn't take too long). Never really understood what all the hate was for.

Same here, and I felt the same way about Zelda 2.
Not saying either are bad games, though. The only BAD Zelda games are.... best left unmentioned.

Don't all Super Mario Bros. games have strange concepts?

It's because Zelda II was so drastically different from it's predecessor. They shared practically NOTHING in common other than the characters. Though SMB2 was pretty different from other Mario games, at least it was still a platformer.

I personally hated Zelda II not because it was different, but because it was ridiculously difficult, things like extra lives and revcovery items were nearly impossible to find, and the game forced you to restart all the way from Zelda's temple everytime you lost all your lives. That drove me insane!
And then there was also that puny steak knife Link lugged around that the game called a sword.

It's also the game that caused me to break my beloved GBA SP (I played it as one of those Classic NES cartridges), so I have some extra hate for it.

I was gonna mention SMB2 as underappreciated a while back, but didn't think of it was underappreciated per se. It gets a lot of unfair hate for not being a real Mario game. I loved playing as Luigi, Toad and Peach, and the whole vegetable-throwing mechanic was really fun. Plus it introduced Birdo, everyone's favorite transvestite dinosaur!
