Question Super Metroid VS Super Mario World.

I've just started dling vc games.

I don't know why but I find Mario 3 frustratingly hard, I get to the end of World 2 and give up. I play a lot of games and never have a second level to be so hard. I think its the way Mario slides. Is Mario World easier or is Metroid a better bet?

*edit* omg sorry wrong forum.. great first impression ^_^

SNES forum?

Mario slides even more in SMW, also Super Metroid is really awsome so get that.

I'd say SMW is definitely easier than SMB 3, but still I'd prefer Super Metroid over SMW. Both are awesome, but SM is simply unique for its great atmosphere in the 16-bit-generation.

What is the point in even comparing the two? They are both excellent genre defining games. Just buy both and be done with it

Exactly. Super Mario World is the best Mario platformer. Super Metroid is the best game in the series. If what you're looking for is a Mario game, then you should really get SMW. Metroid is a whole different animal.

I'm a little late getting to this but I would say Super Mario World over Super Metroid.

I agree that both are must own games but I think Super Mario World is a little better then Super Metroid. I'm almost done with Super Metroid now actually.

I actually prefer the Primes more then Super Metroid.

I've always been a Mario fan. I never played Super Metroid before the Virtual Console. However, out of all the games I've never tried before VC, it is by far my favourite.

I love both games very much, but I would have to say Super Mario World. Any Super Mario game is practically gaming nirvana for me. Super Metroid is great too, but I hate the idea of percentage in games. Once I play games like that, I feel like I have to get 100%, the thought of missing something, or leaving something behind haunts me. I spent three and a half months getting 100% on Super Metroid, whereas I only spent one beating all the levels on Super Mario World. If it weren't for the percentage, I would have said Super Metriod, because I loved the Mother Brain fight.

We know you didn't say you didn't like it and its fair enough if you prefer Mario world people are just (jokingly) reacting to you saying you thought Super Metroid was over-rated!

Hmmm, going to have to say Super Metroid. Super Mario World is a great game, but has lost most it's fun when i beat it in 15 minutes. I think the star warps in this game really hurt the replay value.

After finally beating Super Metroid a couple of weeks ago, I can honestly say that I liked Super mario World better. Don't get me wrong, I like Super Metroid and they are both great games.

....but I have problems with the controls in Super Metroid and thus I still believe that Mario is the better game.

I love the atmosphere and suspense that Super Metroid offers but for sheer fun and replay value, Super Mario World is better. Super Mario World and it's sequel are my all time favourite platform games. I also love all the secrets on offer in Super Mario World. It is surely a contenter for the greatest launch title of all time?

Super Metroid is my favorite game of the whole 16-bit era, so of course it gets my vote.

Super Mario World is a fantastic game, but... I dunno, every time I play it it feels like it's too easy to get to the end. I know there's tons to do, but all the shortcuts, star world, etc. allow you to cut straight to Bowser's Castle pretty quickly, so that everything after that just feels like a treasurehunt. It makes the game feel smaller, less of a journey, and I miss that, which is probably why I prefer SMB3.

Super Mario World is my favorite Mario game ever. I got it when I was young, it was my first SNES game ever, included in the Mario All Stars Pack. I loved 1 and 3, but World was more fun to me. It had all the secrets, and it was easy, so my childhood self had more fun with it. Now today, I can see 3 as the more influential game, and the more in depth game, but I still like World better, and not just for nostalgic purposes. I still love how there are a million secrets in each level. 3 had secret areas, but not as many. The secrets of World, like Star Road and the world beyond that (which provides the challenge) always impress me. The Bowser fight is more epic, and the game is the more friendly Mario environment that we all love today. Not to mention the debut of our loveable dino friend.

That being said, I STILL like Super Metroid more. I first played it on Virtual Console, and it has become my the piece that was missing in my life. Super Metroid has even more secrets than World did, and it substituted pure fun for atmosphere. Amazing boss battles, a great story, and a breathtaking soundtrack makes for a must own game.

Both remain my top 2 SNES games and my top 2 games of all time. But Super Metroid gets the edge, just slightly. Download both without hesitation and immerse yourself in two of the best worlds ever created by man.

I agree that Super Metroid is better than Super Mario World (IMO), but if these are your top 2 SNES games, you NEED to play The Legend Of Zelda A Link To The Past.

BTW, isn't this thread pointless since he already got the game (if he didn't make the thread name so contreversial (it could have been What Game Should I Get?), it wouldn't have half as many posts).

But the whole point of a more general thread name is that good discussion can live on after the initial point is passed.

I agree with you that A Link to the Past is another great SNES game. It seems like the "Super" versions of the major Nintendo franchises have pretty much endured as among the best exemplars of their particular genres. Super Metroid is the best Metroid game, Super Mario World is in tight contention with Super Mario Bros. 3 as the best of the Mario series. A Link to the Past is high and mighty among Zelda games.

I'd consider these three to be the big SNES trilogy of essentials. Good track record.

True, and I agree with you about the Super thing. But still, Super Mario Bros. 3 is regarded as the creators (what's his name) most influential work, and anything he says about his series is probably right; I think; but then again, it is just opinions, so never mind; you're right. I think Ocarina Of Time is the best Zelda game in the way people think Metal Gear Solid is the best Metal Gear game; they were revolutionary.

That's a good idea for a thread. Which is the best game in the series?

I think I'll try it.....check my thread out.

Hmmmm.

I wonder why I never noticed this epic thread earlier......

Anyway, I'll have to say Super Metroid. Best Metroid game ever. Third best SNES game ever (sorry, FFVI and SMRPG beat it for me).

It was otally unique. Tons of power-ups, hidden items. Kept you playing for a long time.

SMW was "meh" for me. I prefer SMB3. SMW to me just felt "wierd". I dont know why, it felt......... floaty when you jumped. I dont know, I just dont like it, kind of like how I dont know why I dont like FPS, I jusst dont.

And, woah, de-ja-vo. I made that same SMW description on Neoseeker a while ago.

I have played ALTTP, now that I think about it, it may be as good as Super Metroid
