You might wanna look at Alien Soldier(SUPER EASY MODE).
You get hp, unlimited continues and passwords.
And superb bossfights.

If you wanna travel to the world of Contra, Super C is a good suggestion.
Not as challanging but the same~ gameplay as CIII.

Dunno what Gunster Heros is like when compared to Contra III since i haven't downloaded it yet but having played Super Probotector
(which is contra 3 in europe) i can say its well worth a download but be warned though if you play on hard mode its very very hard. And its the only way to get to get the real ending if i am mistaken?

I love this game, and had it on SNES way back when, but I have unfortunately never beaten it. I have made it to the final boss on Hard numerous times, but it is indeed insanely difficult. I do recommend it though, Contra III is a lot of fun.

Me and my mate used to play this all the time on his SNES. We got pretty good at it but damn it was hard... loved the mode 7 sections though... hmm. might download it

Its definatly worth downloading. I still have my copy on the SNES, this game is very good. I do agree, hard mode is insane.

Alien Soldier is hard on Super Easy too.

Contra 3 is really hard but it is still really well made and fun. It's something that you reliably get better at the more you play it. It's not hard because it is just poorly made.

I honestly can't comment on how the difficulty compares to Gunstar Heroes', as I know CIII like the back of my hand and have only finished GH a handful of times, but I would urge you not to be put off by what anybody says about this game being an absolute nightmare or whatever. It's all perfectly learnable, and I reckon anybody could single-credit it on normal mode within a week, if they stuck with it. Doing that on hard mode is definitely a more long-term goal, but it never gets frustrating, really.

Anything that takes more than a few attempts to beat seems to earn itself a ridiculous reputation as an utterly terrifying pig of a game, these days...
