On a side note, I tried Banjo-Tooie, and I liked it a helluva lot more than Banjo-Kazooie. The darker tone really improved the story, and I thought the dialogue was better, too. It's too early to judge fully yet, but the gameplay seems more about completing objectives and continuing the story, rather than just collecting random stuff. What I like most is that you get to use all the powers in BK right from the getgo(Bird run rocks!).

BK and BT is a double package you need to play in order.
I never could say this one is better than the other one.
It's like one (big) game divided into two parts.

You have definately more fun playing Banjo-Tooie when you've beaten Banjo-Kazooie first.

Meh, personally, I think I'm better off with just Banjo-Tooie, but that's mostly because I thought Banjo-Kazooie was awful, where as BT feels like BK without any of its glaring flaws.

Anywho, back to Donkey Kong 64.

I forgot to quote whoever mentioned it, but the multiple characters thing was definitely a big reason why I loved the game. Each Kong was interesting and unique, and, combined with the multi-colored bananas, they really gave you a big incentive to go through each level multiple times.

Man, now I really want to play this game again! I hope it comes out soon!

I see it the other way round. BK had no flaws.

BT had some flaws in its inconsistent low framerate,
the mostly re-used same old graphics (not much rework),
the story made no sense if you haven't beaten BK before but was great if you have,
the level design was just a lot more confusing at times,
and the endboss was a waste compared to the genius originality of BK.

Back to DK64, this was the Rareware platformer with the most flaws.
It used / it didnt work without the Expansion Pak but it had serious pop-ups (more than any of the non-expansionpak-rareware-platformers)
The neon lightning effects everywhere were too futuristic and LSD like to fit in a jungle-themed game.
Controls were a real pain, seems like they made DK on purpose slower and glitchier than BK and BT..... and Conker and.... Jet Force Gemini.

I just played all of these games (I own them all) for some hours lately on my N64 again... and the flaws that were apparent eight to ten years ago all show up again.

The graphic flaws are minor things, yet the controls and graphics in DK64 still bug me a bit.

This is one of my most wanted VC titles. They were able to release Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie on XBLA. So, hopefully, they can release this on VC eventually.

I agree with you Banjo-Tooie is so much more fun, playing Kazooie beforehand doens't make much of a difference, the small amount of general knowledge you have might make it a touch better perhaps.

Gotta say I'm on board with this. For those that have never played DK64, it's a good opportunity to whitness a very good adventure game. Not the best, but still very fun to play. If only they had made the multi-player funner...

BTW on the BK vs BT, BT wins by a longshot to me. I never have any framerate issues when playing it, plus the multiplayer games are really fun to play and there are alot of "flaws" fixed from the 1st game.

I am very excited to play DK 64 .
But as for the BK vs BT discussion I would go for BK, it's allmost the same discussion as with Zelda OoT vs MM (which I also prefer for the 1st one).
Maybe the second game has more extra' s to it but it doesn' t have the charme of the 1st one. BK also may be a little short, but it definetly gave me a little bit more fun of playing than BT, don' t get me wrong. BT is not bad or something it as also a VERY good game, but compared to BK' s charme it lacks a bit.

I would say Bwnjo Tooie has more charm because all of the Rare references and inuendos.

Never had a chance to play BT. But I really liked BK and DK64. Maybe a pick up for me down the line somewhere.

The big extra' s made it brighter but not better, BT sometimes had too much overleaps, some of them where good but some of them where also a bit 'timefiller overdues' that didnt interest me too much about playing a very good game. About the sound; well I don' t have to give you answers about that, BK is more memorable. Nonetheless BT was one of the best N64 games and a strong follow up for BK. But better than BK ? No . .

Default Mr. Random here...

I just wanted to come on these forums and stir up some trouble...I was doing my bi-monthly trolling of Google, desperately searching for the VC of DK64...and I came across this that was released Oct. 15:

http://www.mywii.com.au/NewsDetail.aspx?id=4203

...This means that Nintendo is completely capable of creating a VC version of DK64, a wildly popular game, but they've been sticking their thumbs up their butts for over 2 years and doing nothing about it!

Now, discuss! And spread the word to other forums. Let's stir the pot and get one of the best VC releases of all time!

Yeah, that was reported on NintendoLife awhile ago.

Of course Rare wouldnt know, since its Nintendo's decision to put it up or not, as they own the DK franchise.

It hasn't been released yet because it would be a stupid move to release all of the good games frist. For all we know DK64 might not be released until the next Generation of consoles come out.

Yeah, the issue is definitely not a expansion pak incompatibility problem anymore, as Majora's Mask has already been released on the Virtual Console quite some time ago already. Nintendo just seems to be sitting on the project for some reason.

Either way, even well after a year of my initial post in this thread, I still would really enjoy to play this game again. Too bad my N64 died so long ago, as I also miss games like Conker's Bad Fur Day, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Goldeneye and the like.

Since the 3DS is getting N64 remakes, maybe this'll be release on 3DS instead, and IN 3D.

I've become tired of waiting for this game to come out on VC and have began playing through it on my old Nintendo 64 again (though if/when it does eventually come out, I'll definitely buy it again for the crisper rendering, and an excuse to play it one more time). After playing as far as Fungi Forest, I started looking for music clips from the soundtrack, and came across Donkey Kong 64 Original Soundtrack OST – RPGMusic.org. Interestingly enough, some of those music clips are from DK Jr. and even DK3. These tracks were ripped directly from the game - perhaps they originally planned to include a few other arcade machines as well?

At first I didn't like the DK64 soundtrack or DK64 at all. Most of the instruments where used to no-end in Banjo-Kazooie before, plus the amazing compositions of the DK Country series were just gone. All DKC flair was gone. DK64 felt more like a Banjo-Kazooie game... a not so good Banjo-Kazooie game (because it had worse graphics and controls too). If you forget about Kazooie and Tooie and Donkey Kong Country 1 2 3 for a moment DK64 is growing pretty good though.

Umm.. well, odd that there is music of DK3 and DKJr. Must be fake.
And ripped directly from the game? Hahah. No. It's clearly recorded.

And this particular soundtrack is not a very good one. I like the other one on YouTube more. It has all the realtime midi changes of the original game: Almost each stage has at least two or three remixes (ground version, air version, cave version, underwater version). It would be ace when the recorded songs would be edited to change with each loop but that's an easy and very time consuming job to do.

Why does anyone need DK64 on VC? Most of the people who want it already own it on the N64, and it's not very hard to get an N64 set up.

The cart's actually pretty rare and valuable. I often see it going for about $30, which is far more than it would be on VC.

I'm not saying DK64 shouldn't be on VC, but the fact that most of the people here who are whining that it's not on VC own the game is pretty ridiculous. If someone really wanted to play DK64, instead of complaining that it's not on VC, they could spend the same amount of time to hook up their N64 and play the game.

PS Barring extenuating circumanstances, like it's physically unretrievable. Then you can complain all you want.

I must be the only person in the world who actually liked the DK Rap.
Sure it was cheesy and overflowing the 90's campiness, but it was funny.

All that aside, I didn't find anything wrong with the soundtrack. It pales in comparison to the tracks from the SNES trilogy sure, but tell me you didn't hum along when exploring Gloomy Galleon or Fungi Forest. And the siege on Hideout Helm with the timer ticking.. that was awesome.
As for the real-time music changes between in-level locations, I kind of like the idea of being able to listen to each of them individually when not actually playing the game. They were great and the technology behind it was amazing since Banjo-Kazooie, though nothing will ever come close to the dynamic riffs of the iMuse program in Monkey Island 2 - not only did the music change in synchronization with the beat, but it ended the previous tune and kicked in with the new one with a fishing score that fit the song no matter how far through the loop it was.
I guess it goes to show that any game featuring monkeys will always have an excellent soundtrack.

There are a few reasons why I want to own the game on VC even though I have the original cart. The updated, crisp rendering of the polygons makes everything look so fresh and clean - the N64 tended to blur things unnecessarily. This also means I can play it on my large HDTV instead of the little old retro setup I have in the corner of my spare room. The Gamecube (or even Classic) controller is much more comfortable and responsive than the clunky, stiff old N64 controller. It doesn't take up any shelf space, and it's much more convenient to have it stored on the same memory card as all the other VC games. Need I continue?

sounds funny imo, especially in SSBB

nope, i'm one other person who likes it, just dont tell em, or else they will laugh at us
although i must say the SSBM/SSBB version is much better

anyway, i've never played it (yea, you may laugh at me), but i'd like to try, i mean, i got sick of the DKC's as i played them a huge lot back then, just like with mario games, and they seemed endless

this kind of game is different from DKC's, so i may... will buy it on VC if it ever gets on it

i've looked it up on youtube few mins ago, and looks very funny
it was a speed run on youtube, so couldnt see text, but looks fine to me, good enough to download if it gets on the VC

oh yea, i just made SSBB stage with DK Rap and tribute of DK64, a treehouse, which i got as idea from the start of that video

anyways, all we can do is hope, eh?

Isn't that already an SSBB stage? Well, an unlockable Melee stage playable in SSBB anyways.

a treehouse? nope, there's no treehouse stage in SSBB
i'll show you what i made, its nice to fight on/in and its fun, IMO
too bad stage builder has so many limits

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

bad quality, but you can see it
also, it was only cuz the very beginning of the game has a treehouse

anyway, as it has nintendo licensed chars, it may happen
and i bet alot of people buy it if its on VC

I loved the DK Rap. I used to sing to it all the time as a kid, and it still plays through my head from time to time, a long with a bunch of other DK64 themes. In fact, the soundtrack was one of the best parts about the game from what I can remember.

This a pretty good game (as usual). I still can't believe its still not on Wii's VC, unless Rare made this game too [not looking up on wikipedia right now!], then I'm not too surprised.
