The only one I've played is Mario Golf, and it's fine so far. I'd like to give Mario Tennis a try.

I wonder about the "legit" sports titles, though. I played a lot of the late-'90s EA NHL games on PS1 and they were fine, but I wonder how they played off a cart with a terrible controller.

Oh, no, I was referring to the horrendous N64 controller, not the PS1 controller. I can see how there would be some confusion there. The PS1 controller was great for most games including sports games.

To be honest, "legit" sports games might have made fairly decent use of the N64 controller's ludicrous, drugged-up design. I'll have to track down NHL 98 or something and test it out for myself.

Please describe in what ways it's better! I don't have the GCN version either (yet), but I have read that along with the GCN golf game, it's an upgrade over the N64 original. I'd love to see a counterpoint.

The N64 have a much more fluid gameplay and without stupid special powers of the Game Cube version.

The idiot powers ruins the Game Cube version...

NHL 98 is great fun on the 64.

Mario Tennis is easily the best game though, the gameplay was just phenomenal all-around.

For Wrestling, I'd say WWF No Mercy.

Course, it is mostly Sports ENTERTAINMENT...

Yeah I also remember that one a bit, Fifa always feels a bit cheap because it is 'FiFa', but in the old days (before 2000) FiFa games werent so bad at all, ISS was a good prequel to the coming Pro Evo games. (These days they both suck)

The WCW engine used by Aki was improved on several times after that game with its transition to the WWF license.

WWF: Wrestlemania 2000 and WWF: No Mercy both made huge improvements on it, both graphically and in gameplay modes (Ladder Matches, running grapples, Special Ref mode etc) as did their Japanese equivilents the Virtual Pro Wrestling series which also contained interesting elements such as a shoot fighting/MMA mode.

However beware WWF: No Mercy as early carts came with a save erasing bug. The "fixed" PAL version then has bleeding removed for unspecified "correct and responsible" reasons. The PAL version of WWF: Wrestlemania also has the bloodshed option permanently locked off in the menu but due to the clumsy way that it was implemented it can easily be reactivated with a gameshark.

Speaking of which, these games are some of the most hackable games in existence for the N64 if one has a gameshark. I used to have endless fun changing the textures, graphics and scenery of the arena to create new match types.

I can still remember the code for the barbed wire texture: 2CFB and remember the fun I had in slamming people through tables that were now constructed entirely of barbed wire

The modding that was possible with N64 games was all kinds of awesome!

Yooooh, I know sorry. Mistake in the "Best Wrestling game for N64" category.

WWF No Mercy
it is of course

WCW vs nWO World Tour and WCW vs nWo Revenge were just the first games with that great Def Jam engine.

Edited the original post.

Yeah, Dreamcast! But that's a different system.

What about Ready 2 Rumble Boxing Round 2?
Is there a better boxing sports game on the N64?
I haven't played a single one.

I only had the second one. I had a ton of fun with it, but it could get a little cheap at times.
