Default Pocky and Rocky (kikikaikai)

What do people think the chances are of us seeing these two games on VC? They were Natsume titles if I recall who already have a prescence on VC.?

I'd like to see them as the games are quite expensive on ebay.

Yes, Pocky & Rocky are by Natsume, and I think it may be likely for this game to show up on Virtual Console in the late future. Then again, my crystal ball is not that great at predicting the future.

Pocky & Rocky is one of those supersurprises that will eventually show up!

I hope so! It's a funny zelda-like co-op game that I'd get.

Weren't there some licensing issues? After all, Heavenly Guardian was supposed to be Pocky & Rocky 3, but that didn't happen.

There is a very minor license issue, but don't lose hope.

Pocky & Rocky is actually a Taito: A Square Enix Company property. Taito licensed the IP to Natsume, who developed the SNES game. That license would now be expired. In order for the game to get onto the VC, Nintendo, Natsume, and Square Enix would have to agree to terms. It's possible, since Square Enix has a VC presence as well, but more ways to split profits usually don't bode well.

Is there much in the way of story? I always thought they were more in the way of an action shooter than a Zelda type. If there isn't too much story then I might look for them when I'm in Akihabara.

Well, sorry for confusing you. I meant Zelda in the broadest sense.
It's more like The Legend of The Mystical Ninja type of game mixed with shooting.

Apparently the game has a predecessor on the PC engine:

I wonder if that one will show up...or the arcade original. There's also a GBA version which looks more like the SNES games.

The story is pretty stock (good vs evil, no twists... Wait, maybe one, I haven't played this since HS)... Plus the story is so heavily based on Japanese mythology and those weird creatures, you might just do best making up your own story about Pocky and Rock vs the TMNT, the Punk Rock Frogs and the forces of Hell.

If its anything like the Ywestern translation of Goemon then they've probably already done that...

Kid Ying and Doctor Yang indeed!

The games are like Shock Trooper/MERCS. I have no idea why it would be like Legend Of The Mystical Ninja, besides being Japanese.

The point wasn't that the gameplay was like Goemon but that both Goemon and Kikikaikai draw their characters and setting from Edo folklore...which was frequently butchered in translation by 90's idiots who thought Westerners won't get all the "Weird Japanese stuff"...hence Kid Ying/Dr yang replacing Goemon and Ebisumeru.

I therefore was expressing my doubt that the translation of this game would be any more faithful.

Ah, I see. But if you're going to pick up the game in Japan, then I don't get why the translation would be important to you...

The storyline to this game is pretty simple, basically you must save an ancient Princess from the hands of evil. The only things that you will be missing out are the names of the bosses, their dialogue that they speak, and the text in the introduction and ending. But the images presented help tell what is happening. But the English version of the game does not do a bad job with the translation, as far as I know. [I could be incorrect!] Aside from names being more English friendly like Pocky, Rocky, Impy, and etc.

So there shouldn't be any issue with getting the Japanese version.

The Pocky & Rocky games are a barrel of fun, I hope Natsume bring them to VC
