Best I've played is Super Mario Kart, if you can consider that a racing game.

Again, if we are not talking serious racers here then the game I spent the most time with had to have been:

Rock'n'Roll Racing

A great graphical style and awesome licensed soundtrack, fun characters (including a Lost Vikings cameo) and gameplay and a good challenge with plenty to unlock in the way of vehicle customization and upgrades.

It's also available as a GBA port which I hope to pick up someday. Sadly the licensed music might prove too costly to negotiate for a deserved VC release.

Speaking of Street Racer I wonder if Nintendo will finally ease up and allow it now that they've managed to emulate SMK as there were sources at the time who claimed they refused permission for the game to come to VC.

My favourite SNES racers:

1. Stunt Race FX
2. Super Mario Kart
3. F-Zero
4. Unirally
5. Rock & Roll Racing
6. Biker Mice From Mars
7. Micro Machines

Super Mario Kart was great fun, but Stunt Race FX was so stunning and innovative that I couldn't stop playing it back in the day.

My vote for Top Gear (aka Top Racer)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3QpeG1UObI

In my opinion, one of the best racing games of all times.

I've been playing F-zero tonight. Some people feel it hasn't aged well but I still find quite entertaining as a more "serious" racer than SMK and more rewarding of skill unlike the spamming ******* that every super mario kart game is.

The only racing games I've played was F-Zero and Super Mario Kart. Though I thought both games were decent, I prefer Super Mario Kart more.

Battle Cars is one of my favorites on the SNES (besides the obvious games anyways). It's well worth a purchase if you see it cheap.

The only racers I played when I had a SNES was Super Mario Kart. So that would have to be my likely choice

Same here. Although F-Zero is a bit meh for my liking and I find SMK a bit flawed, it's still a good racer.

I might try Stunt Race FX and Rock'n'Roll Racing sometime.

Super Mario Kart, although it has aged really badly, it's still a classic.

Not to take anything away from SMK and Rock and Roll racing (which are both awesome) I thought Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing by Gametek was really good. It was also awarded a perfect score by Gamepro at the time. It was a very good game and had many features and improvments that the Genesis version did not have.

I liked Street Racer. It was a fun karting game with added comedy violence and copyright flouting characters and locations.

F- Zero was/is very good (especially when you look at the year it was released). I also played it some months ago and enjoyed it much. I think its the less colourful touch it has compared to SMK that gives this game a slight minor feeling to start with, but when playing it for 10 mins. you will see that it is still very playable and addictive indeed.

For me, F-Zero is more a tech-demo than a game itself.

I wouldn't question that its designed with showcasing mode 7 in mind but I have a hard time understanding your claim about it not being much of a game itself.
For me, F-Zero is a pretty robustly designed racer that, while certainly minimalist in its presentation, is very much a pure racing game.

What is it about it that you think makes it less of a game than a tech demo?

It was probably too fast and advanced for it's time to be called a game.

No, seriously, F-Zero has 4 cups with 5 courses each and 4 machines to select from. It had a time trial mode as well as battery save, highscore lists and an original F-Zero comic in the instruction booklet. I'm quite sure this was one of the best solo racing games in 1991 since at that time I was alive and read the reviews and I still own that game as it was one of my very first SNES games.

Tech demos usually are some benchmarks or graphic/audio presentations with limited interactivity. F-Zero got plenty gameplay, more than most of the other games from that era, so I'm not really sure why someone could call it not a game.

Default Best Racing games on SNES

1st: Super Mario Kart (With the Time Trial activity and Tournaments that still happen today, shows how the game has lasted so long )

2nd: F-Zero (Probably would have rated this a little lower back in the day but scrapes into 2nd for its crisp controls like SMK although can be a little harder on some tougher tracks. Didn't have the multiplayer ability but great Time Trials).

3rd: Stunt Race FX (The 3d graphics attempt looks a bit blocky now, even though it was meant to surpass SMK and F-Zero at the time which now look clearer to play, but a very nice game and concept with fun characters that we all miss, could Nintendo ever bring them back on the Wii? They would look really cool!)

4th: Street Racer: A fun game for multiplayer, not the same handling as SMK but kind of built on a similar mode 7 template.

5th: Micro Machines 2: Turbo Tournament (Again a tricky one to get to grips with (the later V4 version on PS2/DS was easier) but more fun than the first one.

6th: Micro Machines : Was quite tricky to get into.

7th: Top Gear 2

8th: Top Gear

9th: Exhaust Heat

Thats about all i got to play; though the Top 2 are the ones i am involved with the most.

Super Mario Kart by far! It was the beginning of an awesome and entertaining/hardcore series!
