You make a lot of threads. I for one found the controls of both versions to work surprisingly well, and the new additions were quite neat to the DS version. Of course, the original is well, the original, and I can use a more fitting controller with it. I think they are pretty much tied for me. Swell game.

I prefer the DS remake despite the controls being a bit better in the original. But the additions to the remake really add to the (already great) fun of the N64 original.

I completely agree with this comment. Another thing I liked in the SM64DS was how they toned down the difficulty in Tick Tock Clock.

That's good to hear. The later levels require a lot of precision and this was a problem with the DS controls. Saying that though, the VC version also suffers control issues due to the loose analogue sticks of the GC and particularly the CC.
The game was designed around the N64 pad so thats the best way to play it in my opinion but it was nice to revisit it in DS format with new levels and people no longer obsessing about what the sign in the fountain said!

He does, but as the ones I've read so far are fairly interesting and not, for example, about singing in the shower or some other idiotic topic, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

N64 version. The controls ruined it for me on DS, I couldn't get to grips with it at all, although I do prefer how the DS version looks and the minigames are quite fun. Overall I don't recommend the DS version and think it was a mistake.

You can use an AR on the N64 version too though and achieve all sorts of crazy effects.
Hacking N64 games apart and pulling weird stuff out of the code was great fun back in the day.

I don't know if they had Action Replays on the N64 but I do know thay had Game Sharks. In fact I used by GS a lot on games like OoT, GoldenEye, and Mario 64.

I'd say that from what I've played of the two, the original seems like the better game. It's really my issue with the controls. While the control pad works fine, a control stick works miles better. However, I gotta say I really like the minigames they added to the DS version.

That's also disrespectful if people have taken the time to write to you and you deliberately ignore them. Why bother coming here? I'm probably wasting my time even now because he's not going to read this.

I prefer the original, it controls much better, which means a lot. In the original I can comfortably play much quicker and more recklessly, while I have to be more cautious in the DS one.

The original has better controls, but the DS version is the better version all around. It looks a lot nicer, and it's got a bunch of great extras.

As much as I liked the additions in the DS version, they still didn't make up for the crappy controls and shoddy camera, which ruined the game for me! Now I'm starting to wish I had kept the N64 cart instead of trading it in for the piece-of-crap DS version.

I prefer the N64 version, the DS version has awful controls! But it's still an amazing game!

The N64 game was more memorable playing the first time and that's why so many gamers feel attracted, however I felt Super Mario 64 DS to be amazing, and everything just felt so much smoother. However, to be honest it was easier, because characters jumped higher, and the map helped a bit too - it doesn't matter though, they are both great games, and I'm about the only person who doesn't mind New Super Mario Bros.'s control either it seems...

I guess I'll add that most of the DS extras are worse than the original content, so while it does offer lots in the way of extras, the extras aren't as good as the base content. Effectively saturating the experience, to a small degree.

Or like an amazingly beautiful house near the ocean that has been perfectly decorated, but 5 years later its cluttered with excess junk and the ocean has been polluted.

The bonus mini-games thrown in just to show what the DS is capable of, are weak, and add nothing to the game.

The 4-player battle mode also seemed a bit weak, and I think could have been improved if they'd spent more time on that than the mini-games.

But the additional levels, stars and powers were all pretty welcome additions to the DS version, in spite of the poorer control scheme.

If they rereleased it as a Wii download, letting you use the Cube / Classic controller, then I'd say it's definitely better than the original version. But as it is, I think the N64 version is preferable, thanks to the controls and larger screen.

Agreed. Heck, I would even pay full price for a Wii version. I wanna play SM64 as Luigi without flying off a platform when I'm trying to turn, and I want to chase the rabbits without it being a complete pain in the ass.

I actually liked both games equally. Having played the original so long ago, the DS one was a very refreshing way to enjoy the game again anywhere I went! Although the additions are nice, the controls are a bit murky which is why I would have say the original is the better game.
