Post Metareview -- Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) (Joystiq)

The time of Super Smash Bros. Brawl is almost upon the North Americas. Sunday, in fact, in case you're just waking from a coma (welcome back, btw). We've given our initial impressions of the game, but the reviews are coming in and they look smashing (sorry). The only real complaint leveled against the game is that it doesn't move the series forward, but merely refines what's there. We're pretty sure the many who plan on playing all Sunday night and are calling in sick for Monday don't care.

  • GamePro (100/100): "From the fighting mechanics to roster of players Brawl is a well-rounded game that I just couldn't put down. The only downside to Brawl is that it doesn't do anything to reinvent the series. It takes elements of past SSB games and refines them, which is great, but players expecting an entirely new experience won't find it here. Still, it is a well round game that doesn't disappoint and it's a must buy for every Wii owner."

  • IGN (95/100): "You will play the game to death when you get it. But unlike so many single-player hits, Metroid and Mario included, you will still be playing and consequently loving Brawl in the months and years to come. It is one of the great multiplayer titles of the generation and simply not to be missed."

  • GameTap (90/100): "That's the beauty of Brawl: It's a game that keeps on giving. The game supports online matchups via the Wi-Fi Connection, of course, but even when you're not focused on the primary game modes, you can spend hours just playing with extra features or hunting down a ton of unlockables. ... Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a Wii game you can play forever...or at least, until the next Nintendo console arrives."

I don't get it. They gave it 100/100 when they don't think it's perfect. But whatever, am I the only American/canadian wii owner not getting this sunday?

Gamepro reviews games on an out of 5 scale, Metacritic just translates it to an out of 100 scale, so Gamepro gave it a 5 out of 5, which basically means it's top quality and should be in every Wii owners collection however, when Metacritic converts it to their scale a 5/5 becomes 100/100.

Also, just because a game doesn't "advance the series" (whatever that means) doesn't mean the game itself, taken on its own merits, is any less good. Very excited for Sunday.

This is something that annoys me about modern gamers and game reviewers. Back in the day sequels were generally more of the same with small refinements that made the games better. Now it seems companies dare not even think of making a sequel unless they are going to radically overhaul the game.

Now I've played melee once at a game exhibition, didn't really see what all the fuss was about, I'll probably get this when it eventually comes out in the UK but to be honest I'm more excited for mariokart.

Have I got one hell of a treat in store for myself being that I've never really played a smash bros game before, or is it something of an acquired taste

Splutter, I've never played a Smash game before either. I didn't even really know what they were until I started following Brawl. The hilarity of the concept and the rosters, the apparent simplicity of the gameplay/controls (the same reason I like Koei's Warriors series), and the sheer volume of unlockable content sold me on it.

I've never been into fighters, and I've never been any good at them, but this one looks like one that could appeal to me.

You're not alone. I have to wait an extra week for my Walmart preorder to come in.

Yeah. Thats what the smash bros series is about. You dont need to be good at fighters. The game can be as simple as a 2 button & d-pad game. Its something anyone can just pick up and play. That doesnt mean theres no depth to it though cause theres plenty.
